Notes: Torpedo Pilsner is a hop-forward take on the crisp classic lager. We and the folks at Firestone Walker share a passion for New Zealand hop varietals, so we loaded our legendary Hop Torpedo with southern hemisphere hops for a fruity, floral twist on the pilsner style.

Just down the road from us in California’s Central Coast wine country, this rock star brewery has earned “Mid-size Brewery of the Year” at the World Beer Cup four times. Like us, Firestone is passionate about hops. Their skill with the ingredient shines in their Pale Series and elsewhere in a long beer lineup driven by a premier brewing team.

Pale gold, frothy foam, fingers width of head. Drippy lace around the edges. Thin veil across the surface. Bright clarity, pretty nice looking.

Clean lager yeast hits the nose first, along with a crackery pilsner malt aroma.

Taste is snappy and crisp with a light yet firm hop bitterness that lingers into the aftertaste. Crackery malt, light grassy hop taste. Light feel, easy drinking. Overall well put together, something I'd drink again.

1st stop in the tour for me is California with the hoppy pils.

Pours a finger or two of white head. Fades down to a ring. Leaves some lace. Active carbonation in the glass. Color is a clear straw yellow.

Flavor profile: Clean bready malts. Maybe a hint of biscuit. Grassy and zesty hops. A bit herbal flavors. A bit of a citrus fruit kick.

Mouthfeel: Very crisp and clean. Lighter bodied. Ends with a layer of hops on the palate.

Overall, a solid pils. Very tasty and easy to drink. Aroma is muted, but otherwise flavor is clean with a lot of flavors. Excellent way to start the tour!

These Beer Camp beers are getting a bit long in the tooth. I need to hurry up and review these before they fade.
Nice two fingers of white head. Head recedes rather quickly but leaves rings of lace on the sides.
Smell is mainly bready malts with some grassy herbal hops.
Taste is plenty of bready malts with an interesting and complex hop back. The hops dominate slightly but I expected that.
Long dry mildly bitter finish. Crisp and refreshing. Mouthfeel is light to medium. Well done American West Coast Pils. Some fruitiness in the hop finish.

Poured a beautiful cloudy rich golden yellow with two fingers of fluffy white head. A gorgeous looking pilsner. Scents of floral, jasmine, perfume-like hops, a faint touch of tropical fruit and a honey/graham cracker character from the Pils malt. A crisp, clean appealing aroma profile most similar to a German Pilsner, with a bit more fruit character than is common for the style. Flavor begins nicely bitter, with crisp floral hop flavors and a low, yet present, Pils malt sweetness and an extremely faint hint of citrus peel. The middle is dominated by floral hop flavors with a moderate bitterness level and a slight presence of Pils malt sweetness. Finish is dry with floral hop flavors most reminiscent of jasmine with some slight herbal hop character in the background. Aftertaste is floral hops with notes of jasmine with moderate bitterness and a slight hint of graininess. A good German Pilsner flavor, very much balanced towards floral hops with malt present, but not overwhelming at any point in the sip. Mouthfeel is light bodied with moderate-high carbonation and a crisp, drying mouthfeel. Easy to drink. Overall this is a good, easy drinking German Pilsner that brings a well rounded, reasonably dry floral flavor balanced against just enough Pils malt in the flavor combining with a nice aroma and mouthfeel. Not the most daring experiment, but quite good regardless.

12oz. bottle served in a shaker pint. Pours a light golden with a translucent clarity and a sizzling, one inch bright white head. Nose is grassy with a suggestion of noble hops. Taste consistent with nose the addition of a sweet and slightly bready quality towards the back. Mouthfeel is light in body with a carbonation that falls just shy of crisp. Overall, a good pils albeit a bit sweet. I'm also not getting much "intense fruity ... notes" from the New Zealand hops.
