bought this as part of the Sierra Nevada "snow pack" - enjoyed on a nice, cold January weekend.

A Dark Like Cola. by far the most head I ever saw on a beer, My north woods inn beer mug had well over 5 fingers, the sudsy foam settles to a thin khaki film with rich, complex lacing.

S sweet, caramel, plus a sharp coffee note

T a bit too bitter for me, so I had a 2nd one!

M thick and rich.

D guzzle! this is like a desert beer...

Appearance - Pours black with cola brown edging where light can panetrate. The head is a light tan color, finger-width at it's peak and dies down rather quickly, leaving behind a thin layer of surface suds and a thin ring around the edge.

Smell - Not unexpectedly, a big, earthy coffee aroma hits the nose first. Lesser notes of chocolate and caramel can be found beneath.

Taste - Coffee dominates the flavor profile upfront. Notes of milk chocolate and cream begin to peak through about mid-taste, then caramel comes through shortly after. A touch baker's chocolate bitterness adds to the mix in the finish and contributes to a bittersweet aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with low to moderate carbonation. Slightly silky texture. Goes down with decent ease.

Overall - A commendable coffee stout from Sierra. Doesn't quite break the mold and stand out from the pack, but it's rather enjoyable. It's a hard style to screw up, but even harder to make a truly outstanding example, so there's no shame in this one. If you're a coffee stout lover, you'll want to try this one.

Stone Coffee Stout

I've wanted to try this one for quite some time but I didn't want to buy the twelve pack. Well I had a new years shindig and I decided to be a complete dick and return all the empties. $27.80 in empties later I buy this since it was basically free so I wouldnt be mad if it sucked. Sierra Nevada usually does a solid job with their brews so I expect this to follow suit. Let's drink it.

Look - From the twelve ounce bottle hard poured into a pint glass. Brew pours as black as Charlie Murphy fused with Seal with a two and a half finger mocha head that leaves a ton of immediate stick as the head slowly goes down at a snails pace. Carbonation is unreadable due to the depth of the beer. The lacing and stick is very nice and almost a Picasso in nature. Dried up and stuck to the glass about as well as you could see in a beer.

Smell - Well would you believe it if I told you this beer smelled like coffee? To be quite honest it isn't as strong of a coffee scent as I had expected bit it still does dominate the nose. A bit of the cherry like sweetness comes through here with some dark breads and dark fruits. Not much of a hop character on the scent.

Taste - Well the taste certainly delivers on its promise of coffee. Medium-dark roasts of the highest quality straight off the supermarket shelf assuming you are willing to pay the extra price tag for them. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I have had more than enough to tell quality from the American average and this is some quality coffee. Other flavors include a bit of dark fruit and the bread is near pumpernickel in nature. Some chocolate talk but mostly all coffee.

Feel - The feel matches the rest of the beer as perfectly as it could. A medium to heavy body in terms of thickness with a cold and slightly cutting carbonation though not enough to give you a case of the burps. Flavors remain largely the same and the brew swallows easily with a moderate level of bitterness.

Overall - This is a very solid coffee stout. Not overly packed with a plethora of flavors to dissect, but quite tasty and very drying as actual coffee is. Hell you could probably let one of these sit overnight and drink it warm in the morning to wake you up. I mean..y'know, if it had caffeine and not alcohol. Don't drive drunk guys. Overall, I like it quite a bit and I will have zero problem finishing the others that came in the pack. I suggest giving it a shot as Sierra Nevada is always pretty good .

Bought in a variety 12-pack "snow pack" and poured from the 12oz bottle into a tulip. Pours a dark and opaque black with a fluffy khaki head that persists for quite some time and leaves loads and loads of pretty lacing along the glass. So damn pretty in the glass, like the (highly doctored, in sure) ads for stouts with ample head and lacing. Beautiful. Smell is espresso off the bat and then some roasted malt and a touch of sugar/caramel. Taste is more complex and layered, without being overly complex or disjointed in the slightest. Tastes at first like your average low-ish abv American stout. Burnt sugar, a touch of vanilla, a robust roasted character, and it transitions to a well-balanced coffeee character. The flavors are really well balanced, and still robust and very present. What really strikes me is the smoothness and cold-brew like flavor that the coffee gives. I think "cold-brewed" has become a buzz word like "artisan" or "all natural" that gets slapped on any label even when it's not truly cold-brew or at least doesn't feel/taste like it, but this has all the flavors I look for in high-quality cold-brewed coffee, but all perfectly in balance with the stout flavors, sticking true to the style. The feel is medium in body, but feels luxurious and smooth, almost with the texture of an oatmeal stout. Overall, I'm really impressed! Sierra Nevada always makes stuff I enjoy, but this one has me considerably more impressed than what I usually find in a variety pack. And on its own, it's still very quality stuff!

This is a great coffee stout with a robust, rich coffee flavor and layered chocolate flavors of bittersweet chocolate, dark chocolate and carmel like flavors. This coffee stout pours very dark brown, with a healthy tan head and lacing. Total stout coffee aroma and mouth feel with a slight bitter, yet smooth finish. Very enjoyable!

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a mug. This beer looks like coffee on the pour being dark brown with highlights shining through. It forms a light tan crown that's on the thinner side. The smell comes in with a nice coffee roastiness that carries into the flavor. It's got that fresh, un done up coffee flavor too it and that's what I like. I drink my coffee black, and it just has that taste and feel to me. Not getting sweetness like they tried going over the top with a creamer or being like a latte. Just a fine, solid coffee stout. Point blank period.

Smoke from the bottle!

Rather dark brown, nigh black, with a ruby hue bottom. Tan head, willowy, bubbles large & small, two finger head. Lacing.

Aggressive coffee-espresso scent, secondary malt followed faintly by vanilla-chocolate hints.

Ruling espresso taste!
Just enough hops, but any more would get in the way.
Creamy aftertaste, as it begins to warm. Strong, dependable malt.

12oz bottle.

Pours opaque black with a thin, tan head. A partial skim coat for the duration with some short strands of lacing.

Aromatics are filled with roasty stout goodness and rich coffee. Char, bakers chocolate, dark roast coffee.

Full bodied with plenty of grippy mouthfeel.

Dark chocolate with intense coffee on the palate. Smooth and rich with low bitterness.

Finishes with lingering roast and fresh coffee.

Great beer. The coffee component is very well done and puts me in the mood for breakfast. An imperial version would be killer.

Picked up as part of the Snowpack in late November from TW Camel for $12.99. Packaged on 9-12-14.

Beer poured dark brown with a very nice tan head that is leaving lacing behind.

Nose has hints of coffee and mocha.

Taste is cocoa nibs and coffee, very nice.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and pretty smooth.

Overall this is a very solid brew. It would be great if SNBC made this a winter seasonal every year. Snowpack was a great value this year, glad I picked it up!

The new SN Snowpack mixed 12-pack hit the area -- and it's on sale, couldn't pass it by with this Stout that I haven't tried previously.

Bottled on 9/21/17, poured into my Imperial Pint.

L -- Deep, opaque black color -- ruby highlights when lit by a flash, with a dense tan head that holds up well.

S -- Almost creamy aroma with light cocoa and roasted coffee back. Some mild dark fruits peaking through with warming.

T -- Roasty characters up front that could be dark malt, could be coffee. Milk chocolate follows and blends into some lightly tart dark fruit characters and finishes with some earthy hop bitterness. This really has 53 IBU? Really being subdued by all the other ingredients.

F -- Mouthfeel is smooth to dry with a medium-robust body.

O -- Definitely a well made beer, as would be expected from SN, but I guess I was expecting more from it. The coffee blends so well with the roasted malts, it might as well not be in the mix. There are other stouts on the shelves right now that seem like better picks for me.

Look - well this is a beauty..thick dark brown color and a tan head. Lots of lacing
Smell - lots of coffee in the aroma as expected. The good thing is that you can tell the quality of the coffee is high, this an authentic coffee cafe like smell. Also get some milk, milk chocolate and the roasted malts.
Taste - creamy and malty. Coffee flavor isn't as strong as in the aroma. It's very sweet with medium carbonation. Some cocoa flavor. It doesn't have really charred roasted malts like you would get in a Guinness stout, it's not a good or bad thing i'm just pointing that out. Aftertaste is kind of dry and chewy.

Overall, it's not perfect but it's very good. Why is it not perfect? I prefer a stronger charred malt and the finish isn't the best. Some people don't like coffee and beer together but i think it's one of the best styles. Even with a small flaw, Grade is still an A

This beer hits the glass in a very dark brown hue, damn near black, with a big, dense, and chocolate colored head. The head sticks around forever and laces awesomely. When you take a whiff of the beer it is straight dark roast coffee. The scent is tremendously strong, but it is dark and dominant with the coffee. Just a touch of burnt malt bitterness comes through in the nostril at the end of the smell.

Taking the first swig of the beer reveals the same strong coffee flavor from the nose on the tongue. Dark, bitter, and just a touch of dark fruit flavors greet the tongue in a burst of fairly complex coffee. The quality of the coffee is just as good as the beers that boast rare and expensive roasts, but with none of the fanfare. The end of the drink sees just a touch of lactose sweetness rounding out a fairly balanced overall flavor. On the palate, the beer is fairly high in carbonation, but still very, very smooth and easy to drink at 6.2% ABV.

Overall, this is one of the better coffee stouts I have had in a while. You could totally put this in your mug at work and fool almost everyone if it weren't for the dense, frothy head. Really an impressive brew here.

I was busy scouring The Fridge’s coolers when I came across a couple of new Sierra Nevada offerings and as usual, I could not resist.

From the bottle: “Our Coffee Stout combines malt flavor and roasty coffee for notes of baker’s cocoa, dark fruit, and espresso in a complex blend of warming flavors.”; “A cup of joe and a bold beer can thwart the winter cold, so we blended them for the ultimate warmer. Our Coffee Stout is a fusion of dark roasted malts and rich, cold-brewed coffee for layers of bittersweet, fruity, dark chocolate and caramel-like flavors.”; “We brew in Chico, CA, and Mills River, NC, to bring you the finest quality beer.”

I (re-)learned my lesson from the previous debacle and began backing off of my heavy-handed pour a little earlier this time. I still created a nice pseudo-cascade which developed into almost precisely three fingers of dense, deep-tan/light-brown head with great retention. Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with garnet highlights at the edges. Nose smelled like a coffee roaster’s shop! Drool. I am a retired U.S. Navy sailor and boy howdy, do I like drinking coffee. The smell alone can render me harder than Chinese arithmetic with Russian instructions. Mouthfeel was dense, thick and creamy, once more like a scoop of ice cream. The taste was espresso. I do not know where they came up with all of those other descriptors, but this was coffee! Wait, wait, don’t go! I was about to make us each an espresso! My time in Italy on my first overseas deployment exposed me to espresso and this would make my Bocce mentor, Giuseppe, proud. He taught me how to play the game while sipping espresso and smoking Parodis and/or DiNobilis (little dried cigars often cured in liqueur). I will give them “caramel”, but the others? Just coffee, baby! Bittersweet? Hell, yeah! I remember once, in a moment of desperation, biting into a hunk of baker’s chocolate. That = this. Finish was likewise bittersweet and I maybe caught some raisin/prune flavors at the end, but it was all dark chocolate and bitter coffee as far as I was concerned. Is anyone else’s heart racing?

Included in their winter mix 12 pack. Never seen it before then.

Very nice, stouty pour: dark ruby with a soapy and retentive head.

Smells of sharp coffee and char with pleasant yeast. Basically a roastier, more rounded version of their regular stout (which is superb).

Tastes very smooth and surprisingly sweet. Light roast coffee up front, a middle that's an exquisite combination of sweet cream and porter malt, and a lightly hopped finish in which coffee mingles with nodes reminiscent of Cheez-It crackers. That sounds weird, and it kinda is, but it really jibes together excellently.

Poured into a pint glass.

A- Pours an opaque black color. There are some ruby highlights coming through the bottom. Has about a 1.5 finger of tan head. It dissipates fairly quickly and leaves a lot of lacing along the side of the glass. Looks pretty great. (4)

S- The coffee is quite prominent, although it is accompanied rather strongly by a caramel/brown sugar type aroma as well. Some milk chocolate in the background as well, and a very slight roast character as well. Perhaps even a very subtle earthy hop aroma but it's difficult to tell for sure. It basically smells like flavored coffee, and it's not a bad thing. (4)

T- The coffee is much more dominant in the taste, as is the roast, leading to an almost burnt malt character. That wonderful caramel-sweetness is here, but not as much as the aroma would have you believe. That earthy hop is slightly more assertive here, and it shows up in the finish. It's quite nice but not as noteworthy as the aroma in my book. (3.75)

M- Very nice mouthfeel. Rather full-bodied with just enough carbonation to prevent it from seeming too heavy. Has a nice silkiness as well, which could be from the use of oats perhaps? Either way it's quite nice. (4.25)

O- A really nice coffee stout. Great, almost outstanding in my book. It's definitely good enough that I wish it was a year round offering, although I wonder how viable that would be considering they already offer their standard American stout. Either way it's a very nice beer and one that you should try and get if you are into the sweet/milk/coffee stouts. (3.91)

This beer pours a jet black with a huge frothy brown head. It has great retention and leaves quite a bit of lacing. Aroma is very strong coffee, bitter chocolate and roasted malts. Taste is all coffee, much more one dimensional than the smell, although it still tastes great. Feel is medium and slick. Overall this is a great beer and I wish it was available in 6/12pks by itself instead of variety pack only.

Noted on 11/16/2014 – Sierra Nevada balloon glass

A: A picturesque stout with its oily black body and thick topping of smooth khaki cream. Head is unyielding for quite some time before finally receding out to a fluffy crown. Even tracks of lace are left clinging to the glass sides after every sip.

S: The nose invites a mixed bag of dark roast characters primed with blackened malts and scorched caramels. Bittersweet bakers chocolate to follow with a dark berry/fruit presence and some greenish earthen roast coffee. The coffee itself is not as vibrant as I was looking for however what is there is a nice accent to the rest of the aromatic profile. I get some earthy pine and citrus undertones to this as well.

T: Coffee becomes more robust in the flavor with tons of blackened malts, dark caramel, and bakers chocolate to compliment. Rich and full but not quite at the espresso level to me. The beer has a slightly charred note with a helping of dark berry/fruits kicking in towards the finish. Lightly sweetened all around but with enough bitterness to cut it back down. Some flashes of citrus peel and earthy hops. Really good balance to this overall.

M: The body has medium level of fullness and never becomes too thick or syrupy. Nice creamy texture from the carbonation. A touch of acrid bitterness cuts across the palate and lends to a very dry and cleaned out finish.

D: I think Sierra Nevada did a fine job with this one in offering up some rich dark roast flavors in a very sessionable style stout. Would like to see them make this available in sixers.

One of the worst things about this beer is I can only get it in the SnowPack! Granted this year's offering is better than the last few years, but I really want a case of the Coffee Stout, it's delicious, Caramel and chocolate blend perfectly with the java flavors, it's one very smooth Stout and needs more visibility on the shelf...

Sierra Nevada makes everything very solid. Almost like a benchmark. The downside of it is that you won't get any surprise. But when they say coffee stout, you get a very solid, legit, money-worthy coffee stout. Nothing less.

Look: It pours dark brown with a brown head. Head retention is excellent.

Smell: It has strong aromas of roasted coffee and expresso. There is also a bit of roast in support.

Taste: It has a strong coffee and expresso flavor. There are some background flavors of cocoa and some roast.

Feel: It has a medium body.

Overall, it is certainly a beer for coffee lovers as that is what the aromas are and what the flavor is.

First off, I'm a huge fan of Sierra Nevada. Great beers at pisswater beer prices. This one, however, is the worst I have tasted from SN. Tastes like old coffee that sat on the warmer all day long. Burnt coffee aroma and taste. Could barely finish the glassful. The other 2 from the Snowpack will go in the cooler for my Christmas party and I hope somebody else drinks them. Ugh.

This is a great beer. I get a very aromatic smell of iced coffee and dark chocolate. The taste, even better. Very nice carbonation on the tongue up front which makes it thirst quenching and wanting more. Then the coffee and the same malts they use in their porter come together to make an amazing iced coffee beer. They should definitely put this in six packs and make it year round. Perfect body not watery at all. The body and mouthfeel of this beer compare with higher alcohol coffee stous or stouts in general. Its great to see a brewery that thrives on hop forward beers absolutely nail a darker beer.
