Sierra Nevada Nooner Pilsner
1.12.15
12oz bottle

Yellow-gold, brilliant clarity. Small eggshell head. Minimal lacing. (3.25)

Sulfuric lager notes combine with a touch of floral hop. H2S, DMS in check. Smells German. (3.5)

Flavor is well-balanced, perhaps leaning towards malt over hops. Clean and bready, Munich malts definitely coming through. Moderate lingering graininess. Hops are grassy, herbal. Pretty light hop impact overall, though the bitterness is firm and refreshing. Mouthfeel is spritzy and light. (3.5, 4)

This beer is very dry, but the aftertaste is very bready and grainy. A lot of Pilsners are like this, I just prefer the ones that aren’t. I would rather have lingering hop flavor than malt flavor. Nevertheless, this is a very good American-brewed German Pilsner, far better than the Summerfest offering. (3.5)

Look-color is a very clear, light gold. pours about two fingers of sudsy, white head that retains decently.
Smell-grain,straw,mild pine,mild citrus.
Taste-Grain upfront, slight toasted bread flavor followed by hoppy notes of pine, lemon zest, very balanced.
Feel-body is light, very carbonated, finishes quite juicy for a pilsner.
Overall-a very nice take on the style, very refreshing, would definitely buy more when it gets a bit warmer outside.

Good example of a German style Pilsner. Lemony and spicy hops, light maltiness, and crisp, clean finish.

Typical Pilsner pour, with pale golden body, small head, and lively carbonation. The smell was more hoppy than the typical Pilsner, as there was a more floral quality to this than the typical restrained grassy smell from Saaz hops. The taste was a mix of grainy sweetness and hops with some cooked corn in the taste, but no more than typical for the style. The hops were spicy and also added a hint of lemon peel. The body was light and quenching, but did not feel watery. This was a well crafted Pilsner, as can be expected from this tp notch brewery.

Bottled on date 12/12/14. Poured from 12 oz bottle into pint glass.

Appearance: pours a very thick creamy white head that falls very slowly with heavy lacing on the glass. Color is mostly clear pale straw. Mild streaming carbonation.
Aroma: grapefruit and floral hop aroma, biscuit.
Mouthfeel: light to medium mouthfeel, just slightly chewy, with a moderately dry finish. Very lightly carbonated.
Flavor: the hops dominate the middle and aftertaste of this beer. This is somewhat offset by some biscuit and light malt sweetness.
Overall: very well done to the style. A well crafted beer.

12oz : Pilsner glass

Clear golden yellow with a fizzy, foamy white head.

Grassy, lightly floral hops in the aroma and taste. Light crackery, lightly sweet malt backbone.

Medium body, fizzy carbonation.

A well done German Pilsner, tasty and easy drinking.

Pours a brilliant, totally clear straw gold. Plenty of pure white head that sees pretty decent lace retention.

Smells like noble hops - grass, straw, a little honey and just a tiny touch of that skunky euro lager smell.

Tastes very much like Summerfest, just a little more stiffly hopped. More zesty lemon from the hops and less complex and floral than Summerfest.

Plenty of prickly carbonation and a really dry, chalky finish. Nicely done!

Overall, I might prefer a couple less IBUs and a touch less carbonation. In short, I prefer Summerfest, but this is a nice pilsner nonetheless.

Had this on 2015-01-10 at the new brewery in Mills River, NC in the tasting room after the tour.

A - Clear golden-yellow with a 1-finger white head and nice lace.

S - Fresh bread, floral and spicy hops. Inviting.

T - Citrus, bread, lots of spicy Saab hops. More bitter than their Summerfest. More like a Prima Pils. Fresh and delicious.

M - light-medium body and medium-high carbonation. Crisp, dry and refreshing.

O - A welcome addition to their yearly offerings. Could become a regular in my beer fridge.

A: 3.75 - Gave this a vigorous pour, but got a very small head. Beer is a nice crystal-clear light gold though.
S: 4.25 - Classic pilsner aroma, with floral hops and a very light pils malt. Strong and pleasant to smell.
T: 4.25 - Very good flavor, too. Bitterness is on the high end for a German pils, but not too far out there. Lots of hop flavor as well. Very clean malt profile, leaving a dry finish.
M: 4.0 Light bodied, neutral texture.
O: 4.5 - Really good pils, an uner-made style by today's micros. In recent months, Hans Pils from Real Ale has been my go-to session beer. I think this might well displace it. Really good, dead-on style.
