Also known as Harvest Single Hop IPA 2016.
Our hunt for rare and exciting hop flavors led us to a bizarre wild hop. This is a new sub-varietal of Neomexicanus— a wild hop indigenous to the U.S.— named FZMR2, lovingly called “Frank Zappa” for short. It has a deep, herbal and “dank” flavor with notes of stone fruit, melon and apricot all showcased against a hint of roasted malt in this new black IPA.

I had this on draft at the brewery in Mills River. Pours a pale yellow with a bright white head. I can only describe the nose as skunky with a hint of lemon. The flavor consisted of skunky and citrussy (lemon) hops and some malt to balance it out. The flavor reminded me of a hopped up Heineken/skunked Corona. The mouthfeel was thin for the style. This was a one and done for me. I was disappointed in this beer-a rare miss in my opinion from Sierra Nevada.

We're almost done closing out our reviews for the Single, Fresh, Wet & Wild Hop Harvest festival Sierra Nevada put on in Chico, CA. Gonna channel my inner Joe Biden here and correct something that is clearly wrong here on BA: "Here's the deal, you know, the thing (this beer), its um, where am I? oh anyways, its not a black ale (most years, I guess there was this version in a black ale once).
Pours golden to light amber. 1/2" white head. Most noticeable thing about the aroma is the caramel, even though its pimped as a wild hop beer, the barley leads the way aroma wise. Allegations of stone fruit smack of a commercial tug job that does not match reality.
More of a bitter citrus vibe along a caramel current not unlike SNPA does it in both taste and mouth feel. Carbonation was good. These aren't big time hops in any way. They're like a milder version of Cascades essentially. Might be nice for a one off, but probably not going into full scale production anytime soon.

Appearance: orange in color with a 1" head that falls to a spotty surface covering.
Smell: floral hops and some citrus rise from the glass.
Taste: caramel, mild grapefruit, some lemon zest, a bit of earthiness along with floral notes.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp from start to finish. Mild dry finish.
Overall: this was a very easy drinking IPA and was refreshing also. Nice flavor profile.
