Otra VezOtra Vez

Brewed by:
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: Gose

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
In California, where temperatures often top triple digits, perfecting the warm weather beer is a priority. We happened upon a sweet-tangy blend of native-grown prickly pear cactus and grapefruit combined with the zing of a traditional gose for a vicious but delicious twist on the stodgy summer sippers.

Otra Vez is a tangy twist on the nearly extinct gose style. It combines the zip of prickly pear cactus with a hint of grapefruit for a bright and refreshing finish.

12oz bottled 4/5/17 poured into a small wheat glass at fridge temp 4.5% ABV. The color is light straw yellow and the head is off white and persistent. There is a small amount of chill haze when poured but it settles fairly bright. The aroma is slight grapefruit and tartness. The flavor is tart up front and then there is a hint of the cactus and grapefruit on the end. Mouthfeel is light, adequately carbonated and dry. Overall, good for style, but I don't like it at all. This was included in the 2017 Party Pack. I have to think there are many others who avoid sour beers as I would think it's a polarizing style. If you enjoy Gose, give it a shot.

A great beer for standing around in the sun at a company event. Nice tartness but nothing crazy, low ABV keeps you in control in front of the boss. Glad I had it.

Very light colored see through beer. Reminds me of the scent of a helles, malt forward with some "noble" grassy hops. Oh, taste is totally different. There is sweetness and an interesting flavor from the prickly pear cactus. The bready malts make an appearance on the finish. Thin, a bit sour and well carbonated feel from this brew. Overall, not a flavor profile that i'd enjoy more than once.

Pours a clear yellow-straw in color with a half finger of white head. Aroma is a bit subdued but has a very light spicy/funky character. Taste has some sour/tart lemon, pear, peppery spice, and crisp finish. Body is light-medium with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was very tasty, refreshing, and super easy drinking. A great beer for summer.

Pours a clear, pale yellow color with minimal head that lasted only a few moments. Smell is tart and citrus with a hint of wheat. Taste is light and easy, tart, grapefruit, prickly pear, and a little hint of malt. Very nicely balanced between the tart and the sweet. Feel is light and crisp, flavor fades quickly away. Good, solid gose, not overly flavorful but makes for an excellent summer brew.

Very pale yellow, nice carbonation & barm. Aroma is classic gose, just a tart wheat & ripe fruit rind. Taste isn't inventive or envelope pushing but I liked the dry tropical element from the prickly pear, and the rest is just vintage for the style. Not sure what else you would want from a summer refresher.

Look - Pours a crystal clear light straw color, a thin white head quickly settles down into a few bubbles.
Aroma - Light grain, faint grass, green tea.
Taste - Sharp and acidic up front, puckery lime, salt, unripened melon, very faint hop bitterness. Malt is thin and cracker like but has a creaminess. Sour flavor lasts into the finish with a hint of lemon flesh.
Feel - Light bodied, very carbonated, sour, puckery, slightly dry.

Overall - This is a beer for 110 degree weather. Reminds me of a shandy only with a better mouthfeel. I'm glad I tried it but it isn't something I'd seek out again.

12oz bottle served in a tulip. Bottle dated 07/21/16 -- not sure what the shelf life of a gose is, so I hope that's OK.

Pours a slightly hazy pale whitish-yellow with a medium head and a lot of carbonation. Smell is mild and lemon-limy.

Taste is moderately tart, with a mild fruitiness. It reminds me of those star fruit, that look cool but don't have a lot of flavor, but are kind of crisp and refreshing anyway.

Mouthfeel is light. Overall, it's not bad. Certainly light and refreshing.

My first Gose style beer, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Definitely different than any ale I've tried, and almost gave up on it after a few mouthfuls. But after realizing this is not a typical American ale, a really started to enjoy it. In fact I realized I couldn't stop with one! It has a very balanced flavor, sweet and refreshing - definitely try it with an open mind and you may be surprised at how enjoyable it is. Overall a very pound-able Summer beer!

I picked up a single bottle as part of a make your own sixer. Glad that's all I bought because I'm not a big fan of this beer. Aroma is virtually nonexistent and the taste is just nasty. Sour with an odd melon like flavor that I assume is from the cactus. Probably the worst beer I've ever had from SN. Won't be buying any of this any time soon. On the plus side, I didn't pick up the taste of vomit as others have noted. Ended up being a drain pour.

Bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours slightly hazy golden yellow with a frothy white head that settles to a light layer and leaves a little spotty lacing.

S: Lactic tartness, citrus, fruity notes, light malt, and just a hint of salt.

T: Pleasant lactic tartness, lemon with a little grapefruit, a touch of prickly pear, dare I say watermelon, light malt, and just a touch of salt.

M: Light to medium body, moderately lively carbonation.

O: Refreshing brew that puts a cool twist on an old and until recently forgotten style.

Has a bery distinct almost carbonated taste...It is sour! I bought this to try something different than my usuall hoppy ales so if you feel like day drinking, this has low ABV then maybe a couple of these would be a noce option. Its like a pilsner with a bumch of fruity flavor. I think I can get used to this one! Not sure I'll be buying another six pack of it anytime soon, but again worth a shot!
