24 oz. bomber poured into a wine glass. Pours a pure black in color and offers a rich cap of mocha foam with good retention.

Aroma is of light roasted malts and a touch of chili powder. More strong porter than stout on the nose, and rather dry as a result. Taste brings forth more chili notes than the nose, and with a decent lingering presence. Feel is light and subtle for the ABV, and slightly viscous but yet not cloying. Warming expands the flavor profile a bit and adds a bit of 'heat' to the arroma.

Feel is dry for the style but not so much given the relatively light ABV and pepper profile. As such, it works out pretty well. Overall a fairly light and fruity/spicy take on the style. Easy quaff as a result.

Came to the table an ink black with a thinner deep beige head atop.Very dry and earthy aromas with some sharp chili notes, almost to earthy...dirt-like?Just like the aromas for me it was just too earthy with some bitter chocolate and roasted chili notes in the finish wich also lended to the dryness.I like a dryer earthy stout but to me this was a little over the top in it's quest to be a hopped up chili stout.

Appearance - Pours near black with cola brown edging and a thick, cocoa powder colored two-finger width head. Good retention, then dissipates to a thin, broken layer of suds across the top. Decent lacing, with a chink of broken webbing covering a fair amount on one side of the glass, and spotting decorating the rest.

Smell - Baker's chocolate with a hint of cocoa and lesser roasted malt.

Taste - Follows the nose. Chocolate that's more earthy than sweet, with lesser notes of coffee and a light, dark berry tartness. Chili? Not really picking it up outside a tiny hint in the finish, but there's nary a bite of spice to be had.

Mouthfeel - Full-bodied with quite noticeable carbonation; almost too much for a beer of this magnitude. Goes down easy enough with a fairly dry finish.

Overall - Decent brew, but I can't help but to think Sierra played it safe here. The chocolate-driven base is earthy and fairly bland, and while the notes of coffee and berry twang are nice, the chilis are basically a non-factor. This isn't terrible by any stretch, it just failed to take the necessary risks needed to make a truly exceptional beer. More heat, a touch of sweet chocolate and a bit of smoke would've made this beer pop. As is, I wouldn't buy it again.

On tap at The Beer Market in Rochester, Ny.

This one pours a very dark brown, basically black, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This one smells like rich dark chocolate, slight dark fruit, a mild chili heat, and roasted malt.

This has a really nice balance of flavors. Neither the chocolate, nor the chili, really dominate here, they play off each very nicely. There's some definite roast here, with a slight amount of dark fruit. The roasted malt helps to play off any potential sweetness that would overwhelm here.

This is medium bodied, pretty creamy, with a good level of carbonation.

I'm a big fan of this one- the flavors work well together.

Poured on draft.

A: Pours completely opaque with a thick tan head that maintains well and laces nicely throughout.

S: Big notes of chocolate, coffee and roast with a whiff of hops.

T: Big chocolate and coffee up front with a back build of chili flavor and a little heat at the very end.

M: Body is nice for a stout, carbonic bite is a little much for the style, in my opinion.

O: Looks good, smells good. I would have liked a little more chili through the middle, but I can't argue with the chili presence on the back end. A very respectable chili stout.

Pours a dark black. Get a lot of chocolate in the aroma and taste but a minimal amount of chili peppers. I prefer stone's xocoveza as it has more of the heat from the peppera but for those preferring something milder, this might be a better match

Pours black with a thick dark caramel head. Head retention is moderately long, with good lacing left behind. Aroma is of roasted and biscuit malts, chocolate, cocoa nibs, and chili powder. It has a good hearty imperial stout aroma, but with additional notes of chocolate and chili. A sip brings chocolate and roasted malts immediately, which are followed by chili spice notes. The fading flavor definitely sides on the chili spices. After taste is mostly chili spice as well. Mouth feel has a medium consistency - about middle of the road - and is otherwise unmemorable. It certainly doesn't have anything bad going for it, but likewise it doesn't carry much weight. Overall, it's an intriguing beer that works. It certainly has some interesting characteristics. It is similar to chocolate chili bars you can get in gourmet places, so if you have had those and don't care for them, avoid this. The chili is certainly present, but is not spicy or overwhelming either.

Served in a 12oz snifter.
