June 11th, 2016 - Like the Stone Xocoveza, Sierra Nevada has discovered the appeal of Mexican chocolate, with its subtle salinity, and a nod to the ever popular mole. The aroma follows suite, smelling just like the hockey pucks of Mexican chocolate available at local grocery stores, and so does the taste. But there's a firebrand chili lurking in each sip, and it kicks up and out at the aftertaste, offering a little feistiness before it goes down.

Thick black with legs. 4
Lots of chocolate bark. 4
Black rye, tar, carob, ash and sticky treacle to end. 3.75
Gentle chili hum on the linger.
Medium, round, chewy. 4
Chocolate, yes; chili, no - unless they’re Ancho. Also a bit thin. Mellow, if not quite Mexican. There are so many other beers that do this concept better. 4

L: Poured a very dark brown, khaki head with nice lacing.
S: Obviously chocolate and roasted malts.
T: Dark chocolate, coffee but at the end the chili taste showed and really ruined it for me.
F: Nice body and carbonation.
O: For the most part a solid beer but the chili just didn't work for me.

Poured into a snifter, very dark chocolatey black. Taste is almost that of malty, roasted baking cocoa than say dark or milk chocolate. Very bitter, the pour with it's bubbly head that soon diminishes to a very thin white head surrounded by a solid black body my palate got excited. But with the taste not having a strong enough chocolate taste and the chili being so mild it was a bit disappointing. I really wanted a strong chocolatey chili taste like the Lindt chili chocolate candy. It's an acceptable stout but that is about it. Only thing I really give credit is that the abv is 8.2 and you can't taste the alcohol so somewhat smooth yet very dry and bitter. Also there is a small hint of coffee notes.

On tap at The Beer Market in Rochester, Ny.
This one pours a very dark brown, basically black, with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This one smells like rich dark chocolate, slight dark fruit, a mild chili heat, and roasted malt.
This has a really nice balance of flavors. Neither the chocolate, nor the chili, really dominate here, they play off each very nicely. There's some definite roast here, with a slight amount of dark fruit. The roasted malt helps to play off any potential sweetness that would overwhelm here.
This is medium bodied, pretty creamy, with a good level of carbonation.
I'm a big fan of this one- the flavors work well together.

Bottled on 3/29 and opened on 9/10, a cool early fall evening in MN, just right for a stout. Pour is a rich, dark brown and not a gleam of light shows through. Rich, frothy head which fades slowly and leaves good lacing. Aroma is chocolate and malt. Taste is chocolate, brown toast and then a bit of heat comes out in the aftertaste. It's much like those premium dark chocolate bars with chili peppers..which is the recipe here, so that works for us. We've steered clear of chili beers until now. Sierra Nevada may have opened a new door for us.

Pours - Jet black with nice tan head, decent lacing.
Smell - Lots of dark bitter chocolate and spice, roasted malts and cocoa.
Taste - I was expecting a little more chocolate, its there just not as prominent. Chilies show up a little more in the taste which I like, dark bitter chocolate and a little coffee.
Feel - thick and coating not much heat from the chilies we will see later.
Overall - A solid beer would like to have had a little more chocolate in the taste.
