West Latitude compbines our Californian Left Coast love of fruity hops with a touch of Hawaiian "aloha" from the addition of hibiscus flowers, all anchored by robust malts and spicy rye. This session beer is light in body but looms large, like the long shadows of a westward setting sun.

The bottle says "PKGD 04/04/16 1143" so it is a little over a month old.

Appearance: A deep, rich, ruby red and mahogany brown body with great clarity. The head is an off-white eggshell color and is of medium stature. The head appears creamy and leaves good lacing. The color of the body is absolutely fantastic.

Aroma: It has the characteristic rye grain aroma with a catty hop character. It smells a bit like bread crust and biscuits with an onion and garlic smelling hop character.

Taste: It has a definite rye flavor with a bit of alcohol showing through which is odd for such a low ABV. A bit of an earthy tea flavor. A touch of mint in there as well. I didn't realize this until I read the label after I started drinking the beer but it is brewed with hibiscus. I get zero character from the hibiscus.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel on this beer is too thin. It just has no body, substance, or presence on the palate.

Overall: The beer started out looking perfect, smelling great, and then I got to taste it. It's pretty average in that department but the real letdown was the lack of body to the beer. If I could taste or smell the hibiscus it might be an interesting beer but as a rye it is simply average.

This beer was a red/brown color with a very small head.
Floral aroma, not much else there.
Floral taste, some spicy rye.
Crisp, fairly refreshing. It seemed to be a bit one-dimensional to me.

Pours a dark amber with an off-white, creamy head that leaves spotty lace.
The aroma is dominated by fruit and chocolate with a bit of rye and spice.
Taste is fruity, almost juicy with some rye and chocolate and a very nice lingering bitter.
Mouthfeel is medium and smooth.

Brown in color with moderate light penetration. There's an inch of creamy beige resting on top. I smell botanical hibiscus with a hint of earthy rye. I taste the floral hibiscus at the front of the palate. The back of the palate brings forth dark malt, earthy rye, and a light dose of piney hops. The mouth is lightly chewy and sticky.

West latitude pours birlliant brown (SRM 27) under a 1/2" persistent cream to light tan foam cap. The beer has an enticing aroma composed of rye spice, light roast, a trace of nuttiness, a hint of eartiness and some light floral. The attack starts with creamy rye flavors with some near the toasty end of rye which sets it apart from German Rogenbier. There is a slight sweetness that dries out by the finish. A light grainy tartness near the finish with help from the hibiscus joins with coffee and chocolate. While roast is pleasant, there is nothing harsh or burnt. The bitterness is mild to just above and the malt is medium to medium high. Both the grains and a mild hop presence contribute to the bitterenss. West Latitude has a very creamy texture with a medium to medium full body and medium full carbonation. This is a big flavored beer with moderate alcohol making it very easy to drink.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours deep brownish ruby with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of off white head which settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A spicy, earthy, and fruity aroma with a scent of rye, caramel, and juicy hops. Toasted malt with a scent of rye spice, caramel, toffee, biscuit, grains, and wheat along with yeast. Nice hop hints of juicy orange, grapefruit, and lemon along with some floral and grassy hints. Nice hints of hibiscus come through. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, an earthy, spicy, and fruity taste with notes of rye, caramel, and juicy hops. Toasted malt with notes of rye spice, caramel, toffee, grains, biscuit, cracker, and wheat along with some yeast. Good hop bitterness with some citrus notes of orange, grapefruit, and lemon. Also some grassy hops along with some floral notes of hibiscus. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Spicy, juicy, and drying.

Overall: A pretty nice Rye beer. Good balance of malt and hops with a nice touch of rye and hibiscus.

12 ounce bottle poured into a lager glass. 4/4/2016 packaging date.

A: Pours with a clear, reddish mahogany body topped by a towering, durable, off white head.

Aroma: lots of rye; some floral notes; everything else in the background.

Flavor: Some earthy hops join the spicy rye, producing moderate bitterness. Hints of herbs and pepper.

Feel: Medium body and carbonation.

O: a fairly powerful beer, especially at just 5.5% ABV.

Appearance - Pours dark ruby brown with a khaki, finger width head. Fair retention before reducing to a thin, broken layer of surface suds and a thin ring around the edge of the glass. Fair lacing with a few broken lines found around the glass.

Smell - Mild aroma, but hits on some rye spice and a bit of sweetness. Faint cocoa too?

Taste - Follows the nose. Fair flavor, mostly consisting of rye spice and a touch of floral sweetness. Faint, earthy cocoa and a touch of toasty malt. Finishes with a lingering rye spiciness with faint citrus rind.

Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium in body with moderate carbonation. Fair smoothness with a slightly dry finish.

Overall - Eh, okay brew. Probably the weak link in this year's SNBCAA mix pack. Good mix of flavors that unfortunately come across with as mostly weak.
