Black in color. Small, quickly disappearing tan head. A smattering of lace.
Coffee and chocolate aroma.
Bittersweet chocolate taste up front, followed by espresso. The coffee bitterness lingers.
Full-bodied.

Pours an opaque dark brown with a creamy tan head that leaves spotty lace.
Aroma is char and roast with a hint of fruit.
Taste is roasty malt, chocolate, some dark fruit and a big, bitter charred malt finish.
Mouthfeel is medium and smooth.
Too much char for me.

12oz bottle, dated 4/6/16. Pours mostly black with a large sized khaki head which lasts a while; some lacing. Smells of over-roasted malt, char, earthy hops, and some cocoa. The taste follows exactly with over-roasted malt, char, earthy hops, and cocoa; medium intensity but the alcohol is hidden well. Stronger bitterness and some lingering dryness. Above average carbonation and body for the style. Overall, it desperately needs some sweetness for balance. Reminded me of Rogue's Shakespeare Stout without the oat flavors.

Black in color and impenetrable to light. There's an inch of tightly packed, creamy brown head that became about a quarter inch. Moderate lacing. I smell notes of rich dark chocolate, caramel, and faint notes of pine. I taste a nice blend of piney hops and chocolate malt. The mouth is creamy and lightly chewy.

It pours dark brown with streams of very small slow rising bubbles supporting a 1.5" foam collar that takes three minutes to descend to a thick, sticky film. The beer has a very pleasant mix of grain, chocolate, coffee, dark sugar, and spice aromas. It drinks super creamy with a mousse-like texture that dissolves in your mouth to dark bittersweet chocolate and caramel followed by a coffee note and a slight drying and grainy astringency on the finish. The brewers achieve an almost mystical balance between the different elements. The body is medium full and the carbonation average but very soft and finely textured. The flavors are big but nothing is harsh, burnt or overstated. There is a mild alcohol warming but it is not hot or solventy. This is a very fine and well made beer.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours jet black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of tan head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A roasty, rich, and fairly sweet dark malt driven aroma with a scent of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Dark roasted barley malt with a scent of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, smoke, caramel, biscuit, and oats along with yeast. Dark fruit hints of raisin, fig, and plum. Sweet hints of brown sugar. Also some hints of earthy hops. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a rich, roasty, and sweet dark malt driven taste with notes of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Dark roasted barley malt with notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, biscuit, smoke, and oats along with some yeast. Sweet taste of brown sugar. Dark fruit undertones of fig, raisin, and plum. Some nice earthy hop bitterness as well. A pretty good roasty taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, creamy, and pretty smooth.

Overall: A very good Stout. Good roasty malt notes with some nice dark fruit undertones and hop presence.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Revisited, and enjoyed more, in May 2017.
Opaque dark body with a decent, light tan head.
Dark aroma features dark roasted grains but has a high level of complexity.
Thick full and smooth body

Overall: only in the earlier tasting did I find this "a bit over the top with dark roasted malts, with the malt load leaning too far towards burnt."
