Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
California, United States

Notes / Commercial Description:
This beer has a pop of bright orange flavor that emphasizes the natural citrus-heavy character of Cascade, Equinox and Mandarina hops. Brewed with orange peel added directly to the kettle, and all the classic hop flavor you'd come to expect from our all-new take on the hop-forward fruit beer.

Poured into a pint glass from a 12 oz. bottle. Packaged 12/06/16. Pour is deep golden in color with a hint of haze and a dense off white cap. Good retention follows.

Aroma is quit citrusy up front and obviously lacking the caramel malt of the classic Pale Ale. Orange and contribution from the orange peel are evident as well. Taste carries on the orange character as expected and offers some biscuity malt character which gives the beer a decent mouthfeel. Moderate and unassuming bitterness and more orange pith on the finish. Overall a nice and not at all unexpected new brew from Sierra Nevada. Still a bit too 'singular' in delivery for me to make a habit of.

A- Pours a very nicely colored orange color with coppery hues and perhaps some golden/red tinges around the ring as well. The head is thin, but rather there is a super white ring that has formed with some outlying patches of bubbly goodness struggling to stick around. The carbonation appears to be fine and lumbering, and as for the lacing, it is modest with many stringy, small clumps of protein clinging to the side of the glass! Not bad overall!

S- A real medley of citrus and other assorted fruits make an immediate impact on the nostrils! Orange rind, grapefruit, mango, apricot, and peach are all present, along with some caramel sweetness from the barley and crisp refreshing hop bitterness on the smells very well balanced overall and a real hot weather kind of treat!

T- The flavors follow suit reasonably well.....better than anticipated! The citrus character does shine through on the palate, along with softening apricot/peach notes, very mild mango, candied caramel malt sweetness and a finish that doesn't overwhelm, but does contain the bittering hop presence and zest that one would and should expect from this West Coast style!

M/O- Nice crisp light bodied Ale with a fair bit of cleansing carbonation and the oily nature of the citrus really helps keep everything in balance! The alcohol is well hidden in this easy to drink social brew and I would purchase this one again.....great on a hot day while trying to get a tan!

Pours a light orange with a nice fluffy white head. Good retention and lacing.Nose is orange zest and light bready malts. The orange is definitely present on the taste. Orange peel follow by a lemon citrus and supported by a subtle, but present malt backbone. Clean, crisp mouthfeel. Good beer, but I'd prefer their traditional pale ale.

Smells and tastes slightly of budweiser. Overly bitter for the amount of hop flavor there is. There is a little bit of citrusy flavor, but it's mostly masked by the taste of budweiser. Can't think of many redeeming qualities in this beer.

i owe sierra nevada better than "mediocre at best" expectations, but when you jump on the citrus fruited ipa thing this late in the game, and you push it this hard, it almost comes across as another sam adams rebel ipa farce, forced and cheap and pseudo craft at best. however, the beer in the bottle is far better than its contrived public image, and i really did enjoy this one, nice and fresh, subtle in the right ways, and not at all overdone, which i feared. the beer has just a nice fresh and natural orange quality about it, but remains a bitter hoppy and rich malty pale, just like the flagship, but still light and easy enough drinking too, these guys pull that off as well as anyone, and they do it again here too. zesty and oily a little, bitter in its own right too, but its all behind the pale ale base, which i appreciate so much. the orange character is mostly in the finish, and this has a brightness about it, cleaning itself right up before the finish and with peppy carbonation. i expected something sweeter and lesser, but it really is about as well done as something like this can be, and i think it retains its appeal to real beer drinkers over fruit beer drinkers as such. not my favorite beer this summer, but it has a real attraction, i liked it quite a lot, and could really put the hurt on a sixer under the right conditions! i should trust these guys more than i have lately...

This beer pours a crystal clear golden color with a two finger, rocky bright white head. Retention is excellent and there are hanging rings of lacing left all over the glass.

Smell is very strong, in your face orange (natural not artificial) with the slightest hint of pine and bready malt.

Taste is similar, but the pine presence is stronger. Orange is the strongest flavor though, and it clings to the palate well into the aftertaste.

Feel is light, smooth and very crushable.

Overall a decent beer. Certainly does not do the regular pale ale justice though. I am pretty sure this is not marketed for a beer drinker like myself or many of the other BA's. It seems like this would be a good beer for someone who doesn't like hoppy beer. The orange doesn't just cut through the bitterness to balance it out, it completely overpowers the other flavors and dominates the palate.

Packaged 12/28/16. Pours a hazy orange color with a 2 finger width foamy head. Retention and lacing are both very good. There is some orange in the aroma but smells more of the grainy and corn-like aroma you get with a lager. Tastes more like a lager as well. There is some slight orange. I am definitely not impressed with this beer. There is some bitter hoppiness. I really hope this is not consistent with this beer. I will give it another try, but I am thoroughly disappointed.

A pale ale first with some orange added. Could see this is as a summer quencher.

Looks light golden amber with a medium white foamy head. Smell is very sweet orange citrus dominant. Taste is OK, isn't too sweet, moderately hoppy noticable mostly in the bitterness over the taste. Citrus is noticable all around but not super sweet overpowering. The mouthfeel is fairly light. Easy to drink quickly. Overall it is a good beer. I feel like it would be better for warm weather and sunshine. Low alcohol and light body allows you too drink them quicker while they are still cold.

12 oz bottle, pours pretty typical looking, slightly hazed, almond amber, leaves moderate ringed lacing

Def. some orange on the sniff

Tasty enough and easy drinking pale, moderate orangy note, and some resiny hops...better then decent sessioner.

Look: Hazy amber color with sediments suspended in the body.
Smell: citrusy, hop aroma- inconspicuous
Taste: surprisingly not very citrusy considering the smell and the labeling. Fairly anodyne taste- malty and dry
Feel: medium-bodied with little lingering aftertaste
Overall: drinkable, but not memorable

Strong and complex orange aroma. Taste is also driven by orange flavors, but it's not just the orange peel, as the Cascade, Equinox and wonderful Mandarina hops round it out. Some sweetness to the taste profile. Nicely carbonated, with a dry and clean finish. Sharp but not bitter. Very refreshing.

Part of me is unhappy that Sierra Nevada is jumping on this bandwagon, but the results here are fantastic.

This is great for what it is. Nice APA with a perfect infusion of orange - just enough to know it's there without impacting its identity as a beer. Awesome cold for summer drinking. Great head and nose hints of a kiss of orange peel. Real nice effort by SN.

I've had this beer many times but I finally came around to reviewing it.

This brew pours a clear copper-gold body with a healthy towering, soapy, slightly off-white head (2 and a half fingers settles to a quarter finger around the edges and the middle).

Smell isn't too strong but it follows the clean orange citrus quality you would expect. The flavor is pretty on point - orange peel, fruity oils, lots of cascade and mandarina hop frutiness and medium bitterness. The orange definitely lingers on the back of the tongue. Soft malt backbone supports the mild carbonation and almost creamy mouthfeel of the beer.
