Beer Camp: Golden IPA (2017)Beer Camp: Golden IPA (2017)
Notes: Citrus-heavy hops in a dry, yet assertive IPA.

At Beer Camp, no beer style is off limits, so we jumped at the idea of doing a Golden IPA using wheat malt for a light, dry body and bold American and experimental hops for intense citrus flavor. The perfect spring seasonal, we invite you to enjoy this year’s Beer Camp encore.

Sierra Nevada at back at it again: Beer Camp! For 2017 it’s a Golden IPA (whatever that is). Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Golden IPA 2017 - which I will, in my usual tradition, henceforth brand as: SNBCGIPA’17. I love SN... wait, love is a bit powerful a word, I like SN... hmmm, still too powerful, SN is alright. Yeah, better. Last year’s Beer Camp was a high water mark IMO: Tropical IPA. It will be interesting to see how this wheat loaded brew will compare... I don’t suspect favourably, but let’s keep an open mind Doc, after all: it’s just beer! *gets pummelled with shaker pint glasses thrown by various craft beer hipsters* OK, beer is awesome! Can someone drive me to the hospital now?

Poured from a 355ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: Easily mistaken for a wheat beer in a dark Munich alleyway with its hazed golden/straw body and rather fluffy white head. It’s golden - it fits the brief, the fact that it’s got a slight naturtrüb haze is a bonus. 8/10.

S: Aroma like a glass of Sierra Nevada’s own Pale Ale, let me copy/paste my description from that review in case you forgot what SNPA smells like: Floral hops lead my nose to an ale paradise with a hint of caramel malts in the background. I would add that there’s a definite citrus vibe with SNBCGIPA’17 as well. I gave SNPA a 10/10, but that was a long time ago (2011, fuck!)... now it’s more like a: 7/10.

T: Lemon, biscuit and caramel malts, and floral hop notes all packaged in an easy-drinking mildly bitter finish. This is one easy-drinking-lemon-mofo for better/worse. Another reminder that not every beer needs to be balls-to-the-wall intense, however in this instance a little more intensity wouldn’t go astray... just saying SN. 7/10.

M: Decent medium bodied with a reasonably creamy carbonation - it’s not Weihenstephan territory, but it’s getting up there - wheat usually helps. 8/10.

D: What else is there to say - another decent SN brew, not the best in their oeuvre, however it’s a tasty enough IPA to knock back... actually it’s more of an APA TBH. I could drink this with a Pirate Life Pale and not end up with palate fatigue, so really the IPA label is a bit of a misapplication... though it is 6.5% ABV, so I guess in that sense it’s really an IPA... but flavour-wise it’s a touch light for an IPA... umm, what day is it today??? 7/10.

Food match: The largest German sausage you can find... Boerewors doesn’t count: that’s South African... in a bun. Add mustard. Onions? Why not.

Bottled on date of 12/20/16

Appearance - Pours slightly hazy and golden yellow in color with a white, near finger width head. Fair retention before dissipating to a thin, broken layer of suds and a thin ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell - Citrus, pine, spice and subtle tropical nuances along with a wheaty malt undertone.

Taste - Follows the nose. Hops that touch on moderate notes of orange and grapefruit along with a good dose of pine and lesser spice bite. Very faint passionfruit. Fair wheat undertone that shows up near the finish. Mild pith, pine and wheaty flavor can be found lingering in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium in body with fair carbonation. Soft texture upfront with a crisp, semi-dry finish.

Overall - If I recall correctly, SN came out with a Golden IPA that wasn't all that great two years ago, and they've done the same again. This isn't terrible, it's just terribly average. Think their Pale with a slight boost in hops and a mild wheaty undertone and vuala!

Pours a straw yellow with a nice haze, good foam and lacing. Smells of oranges, lemon, grapefruit, and some mild malt. The taste is very refreshing, you get solid orange/lemon notes with a blended dryness from the grapefruit and on the back side a little malty feel. I get mild pine also with a light carbonation on the finish. I would love to see this beer out in the summer, this is in my view a awesome summer beer but actually anytime but when 100 outside I can see myself drinking this all day. Very impressed with this one.

the look is a hazy golden color with a two finger head. The smell is of citrus with an orange and pineapple with slight malt. The taste is of pineapple, mango, orange and slight lemon. The feel is of medium body not too heavy but not too light. It goes down very smooth. I think this is a great beer. Cross between ipa and apa, very smooth and not too bitter but just slightly bitter. Everything blends together nicely with lots of citrusy hops slight bitterness and very smooth for a 6.5.

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass.

L--Hazy, pale yellow with a frothy head that dissipated and left no lacing.
S--Hoppy, citrusy and grassy.
T--Sweet & hoppy. Citrus (lemon & grapefruit).
F--Nice carbonation. Juicy & quenching.
O--Nice stuff. I'd definitely get more.

12oz bottle into a pint glass. Packaged 1/28/17, so about 3 months old.

Slightly hazy pale watery body. Generous foamy white head, which leaves excellent lacing.

No aroma to speak of, nothing good, but nothing bad either.

Light flavored. Some citrus. Quite tingly on the tongue, and slightly bitter.

Slightly below medium on the mouth. Sour and bitter on the finish, also on the dry side.

Overall, an okay drink. Nothing special, but not bad either.

Appearance: pours a very filtered golden amber with one finger of white thin head. Dissipates fairly quickly with some lacing.

Smell: light hops and some malts. No citrus to speak of.

Taste: a little light on the hops and bitterness.

Feel: carbonation Is good and drinkability is excellent.

Overall: had this in may of 17 and maybe it a little past its shelf life. One I tried in February seemed better. Still, it's an easy drinking IPA.

Fresh bottle poured to YETI.
No aroma but decent taste.
A little different than the usual citrus or pine, nothing special to me.

Bottled. Poured into frosted 12 oz bar glass. A slightly hazed straw color. Ample white head that gave way to nice lacing. Hop flavor was pine forward, but interesting fruitiness and nice bitterness on the finish. I picked up a 6-pack because I saw it labeled as Golden IPA. I think it could have been called a west coast Pilsner. It's very drinkable especially right after mowing the yard.
