Notes: The monks at the Abbey of New Clairvaux hold themselves to a higher standard. So when they challenged us to create a beer that transcends all others, our brewers blended Old World tradition with modern-day mastery to deliver the perfect expression of Belgian-Style witbier worthy of a goblet but comfortable in a pint.

Pours a hazy/cloudy bright yellow gold color. Thin white head dissipates steadily leaving a ring of tight white foam along the outside of the beer. Head reappears momentarily as the beer is consumed.

Smell has notes of belgian yeast, wheat, lemon, lemon zest, and spices.

Taste follows the nose with a nice blend of belgian yeast, lemon, lemon zest and the classic wit spices with a nice wheat malt backbone.

Feel is too thin and watery - I'd expect more heft from a beer with wheat malt. Mild carbonation - could be a bit livelier.

Overall a well done wit - but I'd like to see some more body and a tad more carbonation. In spite of this, I'd drink this beer all the time.

Pale straw, thin head of white bubbles. Classic witbier profile of wheat and citrus. Lemony fruitiness with a nice herbal edge. Nice dry and quenching finish.

Not on the same level as Allagash White, but perhaps equal to or slightly above Avery White Rascal, which I drink often. I think the most well done of the Ovila series I have had - most have been just okay. Also the six pack format is to be applauded.

From a 12 ounce bottle, this beer is a light straw color, mostly clear with just a slight haze and a brilliant white head. It is a beautiful beer. The aroma is wonderful....wheat, a bit of yeast, slight fruitiness, and coriander. Nice. It smells like summer. The taste is slightly dry, with an undercurrent of malt and wheat. Soft mouthfeel. Nice.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. "Ovila White Ale"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, PKGD 04/03/17 2058"
$2.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Ah, Sierra Nevada, a brewery I can always count on. But this is a pretty old bottle so let's see how it goes. Nice slightly hazy yellow gold body beneath a short head of bright white. So good so far. Aroma of orange and lemon and coriander with some yeasty phenols over a delicately sweet malt base. Good again, and I'd imagine that if it's lost anything it would be in the aroma but it's fine so let's continue. Mmmmm, great flavor. The spices are soft and blend in with the wheaty and lightly sweet malt perfectly. The coriander adds more of a spiciness than flavor, and along with a moderate bitterness it finishes mostly dry with a little bit of everything lingering gently in the finish. Soft in the mouth with a gently tingling effervescence upfront before it warms to become more supple and smooth. This is very easy to drink, and quite satisfying and enjoyable. I'm probably drinking it faster than I should but it just keeps calling back to me. A perfect example of the style, unlike some of those heavier and sweeter versions (Blue Moon I'm looking at you). Oddly I've never had this before, but now that I know it's out there I'll be looking for it. A new favorite of mine. Absolutely worth seeking out for fans of the style.

Pale cloudy sunny yellow beer with a medium sized white colored ale.

Smells intensely of Belgian yeast and spice even from a distance. Smells sweet and floral with lots of coriander and a strong allspice scent. Scent of fresh mixed bread mixes with the powdery scent of Belgian wheat beer yeast. Lesser scents of honeysuckle and sage honey. This is a notably aromatic ale.

Starts out mildly sweet and malty with a lovely spice and cake batter after taste. Wheat cracker malt flavor with something like cahe batter in the after taste. Bitter is mild but detectable and a flavor element of its' own.

Mouthfeel is thick without being choking or resembling drinking pancake batter.

Overall a very nice surprise. This is Sierra Nevada so I expected a decent beer. But this is better than that. This tastes as good as the best example you will ever get from actual Belgium. Highly recommended.

Poured a hazy, golden color with a large, fluffy white head of foam. It smelled of coriander, lemon, wheat and spices. Nice yeasty flavor with banana, lemon and clove notes.

Pours a cloudy straw color. 5/4 inch head of a white color. Great retention and decent lacing. Smells of strong pale malt, sweet malt, coriander, clove, citrus hops, and yeast. Fits the style of a Witbier. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong pale malt, sweet malt, coriander, clove, citrus hops, hint of caramel malt, and strong yeast. Overall, good blend, body, and aroma.

Cloudy straw colored ale with a thinner white head that fades to a thin foam. Zesty orange, peppery coriander, wit yeast and wheat on the nose. Flavors are nicely balanced with notes of cracked wheat malt, orange zest, spicy hops and yeast, and peppery coriander. Medium body, pleasant carbonation, finishing zesty and peppery. Overall, very good representation of the style; very refreshing and flavorful.

12/29/17...pale muted yellow, some white foam. Classic wit nose, citrus and wheat at the forefront. Citrus forward flavor, wheaty, smooth. Juicy too. All wheat in the mouthfeel, very smooth.

Clear golden color, long-lasting foam, and bubbles streaming in the Rodenbach goblet. Crisp and fizzy in the mouth. Dry and scratchy with a mineral finish. Quite aromatic with coriander, though there are hints of clove and allspice.

Aftertaste is even a little sourish. My only complaint is the excessive spice taste which adds some gritty, dirty notes to what is otherwise an elegant brew. From the six pack of 12 oz bottles.

Collaboration with The Abbey Of New Clairvaux. Bottled on 4/3/17. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy pale yellow straw with a small eggshell white that falls slowly leaving great thick retention and nice lacing. Some sediment. The aromas are very nice. The yeasts seem to shine. A nice amount of banana along with some bubblegum. Hints of citrus and fresh grass. The flavors follow the nose. The flavors are very clean, crisp and refreshing. Hints of lemon. The banana and bubblegum notes are there. Some black pepper in the mix. The yeasts and malts do their thing. Finishes clean. Alcohol goes completely unnoticed. Mouthfeel is really great. It's light with sharp active carbonation. It's slightly fluffy and very smooth. Very easy drinking stuff.

This is a great witbier. The craftsmanship is very impressive. This one is very crisp and refreshing. Perfect for the warmer weather. Highly enjoyable stuff.

Appearance - hazy, pale straw color with white head

Smell - coriander, ginger, hay/grass, lemon rind

Taste - banana, clove, coriander, ginger

Mouthfeel - medium bodied, full carbonation, spicy upfront from the ginger and coriander, banana comes through also

Overall - solid offering from SN on this, good flavors, while avoiding the "soapy" feel that a lot of American witbiers suffer from. Worth a try

Price Point - $2.29/12 oz single

The beer pours a nice white foamy head that dissipates fairly quickly. The beer itself is very attractive and gorgeous to look at with its hazy, bright lemon yellow. The smell is fantastic. It's a wonderful mix of a sweet wheat and a moderate orange rind that goes in and out. The yeast notes provide a nice banana smell that mixes well with the coriander and doesn't overpower the spice notes, which includes a light pepper. The taste is a bit more simple than the smell with strong wheat notes, banana from the yeast, an assortment of spices with a light pepper in the finish and a moderate coriander note, and very light orange citrus note in the finish as well. The beer has a light body and a refreshing crisp finish as it should. It does have a bit of weight to it but it sin't heavy but rather gives a nice texture to it with the tingling carbonation. Overall, this is one of the best witbiers I've had and the best American one that I have had. Definitely six pack worthy.
