Sierra Nevada PorterSierra Nevada Porter

Brewed by:
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.60%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Porter is a testament to roasted malts which give it a rich, bittersweet and roasted coffee-like flavor that's a perfect complement to a variety of foods.

Before Sierra Nevada was a reality, our nights were spent perfecting homebrews and dreaming of starting a brewery. Back then, one of our favorites was a porter made with homemade malt roasted in our kitchen. Decades later, we still love the rich, bittersweet and roasted malt flavors of that original brew.

A: Dark brown, cola with redish highlights. Three fingers or so of tan head, faily dense...terrific sticking power. Tons of lacing around all edges of the glass.

S: Chocolate, roasted malts, caramel/toffee. Not overly complicated, but good.

T: Good amount of chocolate backed up by the roasted malts and toffee or caramel. Has the distinct SN taste that I assume comes from their yeast. Good finish w/ a hop presence.

M: On the thin side of medium. Good carbonation.

O: This won't be the last time I pick this up. It's not a big and bold as some of the top notch offerings, but it's highly drinkable and enjoyable.

Bottled 1257

A: Pours a ruby red color with a nice big head that lasts for a while

S: Chocolate and toffee stand out, with a little roasted coffee and slight herbal hops

T: Same as the smell, dark chocolate and toffee dominate, with some coffee roastiness in the back and slight hop bitterness

M: Light-moderate body porter-wise, with moderate carbonation. Pretty slick

O: Easy to drink and goes great with desserts like vanilla ice cream or cake. Solid example of the style

A- Brown with a slight ruby glare. Somewhat light for the style. Big, fluffy cream colored head on this guy. Sticky lacing here too. A pretty nice looking ale.

S- Wow, chocolate and toffee are present right away. Slight herbal aromatics as well but really just a lot of dessert faire here.

T -This is a tasty beer. Somewhat subtle in flavor compared to most porters, but showcases milk chocolate and caramel flavors with a lingering vanilla essence. Moderate bitterness. Overall great flavor.

M- Light but creamy body and pretty slick. Light carbonation that's perfect for this style. Pretty comparable to your average porter, that doesn't make it bad though.

O- I think this is one of the quintessential porters. Lots of after-dinner flavors, so try it with some ice cream. Now i know why they say this was Jerry Garcia's favorite beer.
