Beer Camp Across The World: Campout PorterBeer Camp Across The World: Campout Porter
Notes: In honor of Beer Camp, our friends at New Zealand's Garage Project brewery wanted to carry the camping theme straight to the flavor of our beer. Featuring a unique malt smoked over manuka wood, rare manuka honey and vanilla beans, this robust porter has sweet notes reminiscent of marshmallows toasted over a campfire.

Orange-hued brown with an overly-massive tan head that leaves thick lacing.

Lightly roasted dark malts with a hint of marshmallow is all that shows through the long-lasting head beyond carbon dioxide. Sniffing what's left in the bottle gives a strong vanilla impression, however.

The taste is very dark roasted malt, just pushing up against the line of burnt, with the vanilla and marshmallow showing beneath the heavily roasted quality. Some smoke shows on the backend, and the aftertaste almost takes on a meaty quality.

It's light-to-medium bodied, very slightly creamy, and maybe a hair over-carbonated.

This is another really unique one. I appreciate them going dark instead of sweet, but it's maybe a touch too far on the burnt side for my taste, and I'm not a fan of the carbonation level in this one. 4/19/17 bottling date.

Poured into a 16 oz snifter at near room temperature bottled on 4/19/17. Pours a dark mahogany with a fairly large 2 inch khaki head that leaves thin wisps of glass all over the place.

Smell is vanilla bean, hints of smoke and leather, butterscotch, dark chocolate, molasses, and coffee grounds.

Taste follows vanilla starts the party, butterscotch, dark chocolate, some smoke, molasses, and coffee.

Mouthfeel is a little bigger than medium and I wish it was bigger, mild carbonation, not overly dry, and excellent drinkability for 7.7%ABV and for me drinks a little bigger than its ABV.

Overall I really like this beer and wish I had another bottle. I really think this year's 12 pack has been excellent 6 bottles in.

Pours clear deep reddish brown with an eggshell head that blankets the surface and laces well. Smells of earth, ash, and roasted nuts. Taste is complex. Starts with some vanilla, some nuttiness, wood, cola, and then all of a sudden the combination resembles s'mores. Marshmallow, chocolate, and graham cracker crust, though subtle us definitely there. Feel is a but thin bodied and does have a smokey/woody bitterness to finish it off. Overall, I would love to enjoy a six pack of this campside in Yosemite or under the desert star studded night sky. It's unique enough to be interesting yet comfortabley familiar. Cheers!

A - Dark brown-black body, opaque, with a thin white head that fades to a wispy cap. The lacing is tightly bubbled.

S - Quiet notes of roasted malts and a bit of floral honey, dark fruit notes.

T - The nose is pretty close, opening with a bit of plum-like sweetness, roasted dark bread and coffee malts, and a mildly acidic and bitter close.

M - Feel is a bit thin for my taste, coming off a bit cola like in carbonation and in weight.

O - Not as interesting as the marketing would have you believe, but a pleasant combination of roast and floral sweetness, with just enough bite in the close.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a speiglau stout glass.

Look is a hazy very dark brown, bordering on black with an off white head.

Aroma is roast and a light smoke.

Taste is a little too astrigent with the sweetness almost like there was an additive. Ends on a roasted note.

This beer pours a very dark brown with a minimal head. The aroma is rather sickly sweet, probably from the honey, with wisps of smoke and chocolate, as well as candied black cherry, vanilla, marshmallow, and dried blueberry. The flavor starts with milk choclate and vanilla, then a sweet hit of boysenberry syrup and other dried, syrupy berries, with a bold, smoky and bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with lively carbonation. Overall this is a pretty tasty beer - it manages to exhibit dessert qualities without being too rich or sweet.

look - dark dark reddish brown slight head great skimming
smell - dark roasted malts with lots of sweet scents like vanilla and honey as noted on the bottle
taste - sweet rich caramelized roasted malts with the vanilla and honey taste. Really does remind me of a smore
feel - medium body with a fairly light fizzle carbonation
overall - pretty yummy different beer. Not overally sweet like some porters or browns end up going when doing something like this so good job!

PS.. I tried it after it aged for a little over a year and it changed a lot! Smells like mild red cherry and caramel. Taste a lot like the scent. Carb is the same. Way better fresh!

A little too sweet for my liking, though I often find that beers w/ honey as a brewing ingredient get that way for me, perhaps something about darkened/cooked honey that just doesn't suit. Definite vanilla presence, though the smoked malt component is pretty tamped down. A little slick in the body, which amplifies the sweetness. I can folks liking this, but it just didn't quite work for me.
