Notes:
Colorado's Avery Brewing Co. and Sierra Nevada both make American-style barleywine ales verging on the hop extreme. For this collaboration-dubbed "Big Hog" as an homage to the two beers that inspired it-we recreated both barleywine recipes and then blended the beers into a new hop-heavy creation. It features rich, bittersweet malt character with notes of caramel and toffee balanced against a massive wall of hop flavor and is bottle conditioned for longevity.

Pours a clear mahogany color. 5/4 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of piney hops, spicy hops, alcohol, sweet malt, rye, and tea. Fits the style of an American Barleywine. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level and strong bitterness. Tastes of piney hops, spicy hops, alcohol, sweet malt, rye, and tea. Overall, good appearance, feel, blend. simplistic, but tasty.

There is a slight difference in the aromatic hop profile between this and, say, Bigfoot - it offers a bit more grapefruit peel and general citrus. Still, it's nonetheless a very piny-smelling brew. There's a hefty and even nuanced malt backbone that offers some toffee, brown sugar, molasses, and caramel. Peachy ale esters seem to tie everything together well. A good nose, but one that seems overly bitter (just like Bigfoot, really). Indeed, this one is bitter as it traverses the palate. It does start off sweet tasting, but then bitterness takes over the middle and finish. I do notice the citrusy dry-hopping slightly around the back end, but ultimately the trademark pine and floral qualities dominate. This one needs AT LEAST a year in the cellar to smooth out. It tries to go down easily (and it does finish dry), but the bitterness makes it almost taxing. Carbonation is medium to slightly high. For better or worse, it tastes just like a cross between Bigfoot and Hog Heaven - the former being something I must be in a very specific mood to enjoy. An interesting curio, no more, no less.

It pours a beautiful golden amber, surprisingly light colored for a barleywine but absolutely lovely with a creamy, persistent head. The smell is full and boozy. Hints of apricot and raisin with a faint back of resinous tart hop. The taste is one I can get behind fully. A barleywine for hop heads, you could pass it off as an overly malty DIPA but it's strong malty backbone lends a caramel booziness familiar to any barleywine lover. The lemony hop top end balances the booziness perfectly. And to top it all off this beer flows over the tongue languidly, a weary barge captain giving in to the river it takes it's sweet time crossing your palette. Muted carbonation and a rich flavor make it an absolute delight to take down. Overall this is a fine ale from two fine brewers. The perfect detente for anyone embroiled in an IPA/Barleywine feud.

Appearance: This beer looks absolutely amazing in the glass. The head is a thin creamy textured white cap and it rests above a beautiful body of mahogany brown, deep reddish-brown, burnt umber, and autumn orange. It is truly a beautiful beer to look at.
Aroma: The beer certainly has a hoppy aroma which is a bit piney and earthy. There is also a light woody aroma to the beer and just a touch of alcohol. The hop aroma has an additional scent that is a bit hard to summarize...it is a bit like the scent you get from certain weeds or wild grasses after mowing but it isn't like hay or like cut flowers.
Taste: The flavor of the beer strongly mimics the hop aromas. It has a strong herbal flavor that is a bit hard to pinpoint; it is a bit minty with some bay leaf and thyme. Honestly this feels like a bit of a new take on the American Barleywine and it is a welcome one. The beer has a very savory spice-focused flavor and although many people will tell you that they associate Barleywines with Winter this has a very Spring or Summer-like feel to it.
Mouthfeel: It has a good deal of bitterness and the beer has a good medium-sized body to support it. The carbonation is excellent. The best part of the mouthfeel is the crescendo of sharp bitterness that hits right at the end and then silently drops away. I am very impressed at how well this beer drinks.
Overall: It is an excellent beer and I hope that it is brewed again. I would highly recommend it and this is one of the beers that really "makes the pack." This beer really exemplifies what an American Barleywine is. It is absolutely fantastic and I am enjoying every drop of it.

Medium thick mouthfeel.
Dry pickle, oak & mild caramel flavors up front; strong soap notes on the finish, with faint lemon zest. No booze heat.
This was tongue-scorchingly bad...like licking a bar of soap. Avoid at all costs.

S- Usual hoppy barleywine aroma of herbal, piney hops and caramel malt.
T- Quite hop-forward with lots of bitter, earthy hop flavor. The malt provides a good toasty quality but not a lot of sweetness. The whole profile is definitely on the dryer end. Lingering hop bite and the alcohol is pretty apparent.
M- Sharp and oily from the hops with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.
O- Decent but I feel like this is just a slight variation from Avery's Hog Heaven. Nothing new and exciting here.

This was the last one of a fantastic 12-pack collaboration, the best Beer Camp I’ve had yet. Considering Avery was a top-15 brewery for me and really a top 5 for the big, boozy stuff, I was looking forward to this. Poured an amber, semi-clear color with two fingers of off-white frothy head. Could see a few slow moving bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good foamy lacing. Excellent foamy retention. (Sight - 4.00)
First thing on the smell was how hoppy it was. First thought was CTZ hops, but not 100 percent sure. Also got pine, caramel, toffee, notes of earthy wood, spoiled orange peel, toasted brown sugar, toasted brown bread and woody herbal. (Smell - 3.75)
Taste was a little less hoppy than the nose. Definitely getting that Chico yeast. Also got earthy woody malts, bitter grapefruit rind, orange peel, caramel, toffee, woody herbal, toasted brown sugar, nectarine, peach, apricot, bitter mango rind and herbal notes. (Taste - 3.50)
Medium body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Bitter, boozy finish. (Feel - 3.50)
This one was just good, not anything I’d want to have in big amounts again. (Overall - 3.75)
