Colorado's Avery Brewing Co. and Sierra Nevada both make American-style barleywine ales verging on the hop extreme. For this collaboration-dubbed "Big Hog" as an homage to the two beers that inspired it-we recreated both barleywine recipes and then blended the beers into a new hop-heavy creation. It features rich, bittersweet malt character with notes of caramel and toffee balanced against a massive wall of hop flavor and is bottle conditioned for longevity.

Bottle from Beer Camp 2017 case. Clear, medium amber, nice fluffy head coats and stays and provides cover for the beer. Big, bitter malty aroma. Taste also brings the malts to to the front, apropos for the style. Sweet, caramel, toffee, butterscotch, woody, peat. Big lingering bitterness with a modicum of heat. Pretty solid barley wine, as expected from these two.

Bottled 4/17, enjoyed 3/18.
Wish I had this fresh for comparison but I also prefer my barleywine with some time on it.

Right out the bottle this poor looks amazing. Incredible head retention atop a ruby-tinged caramel colored brew. I get a big heady aroma that's part orange pith and part pine sap. For a beer with age it remains remarkably hoppy, sweetly bitter with lots of grapefruit and orange peel in the finish. Big, but not too big. I liked it.

12 oz bottle, PKGD 4-12-17, apparently well cared for and aged at a beer store here in Florida...

Pours darker amber and leaving loads of fine and frothy sheeting all over the glass.

Maple and vanilla malty nose.

Super smooth and tasty BW, More maple malts and more smooth vanilla and bready notes..highly enjoyable, glad I took a chance on this one.

Aged 16 months, poured into a tulip.

Pours a dramatically clear garnet with an off white2 finger head that maintains a thick cap through the whole drink. Sticky lace clings to the glass in large rings with each sip.

Resinous hops, pine, grapefruit peels, and rich toffee leap from the glass with underlying notes of grape esters and alcohol.

Toffee, resin, pine, and bitter citrus peel give way to a deep bitterness that clears and leaves a tingle on the back of the tongue and a mild alcohol warmth.

Rich and creamy with a medium body that quickly washes away with a dry bitterness and alcohol, leaving the throat warm.

Had this beer fresh when the Beer Camp multi pack released. Was just like Bigfoot... too bitter with charred American C60 notes. Age has done this beer well. Much more rounded as the C60 has oxidized some removing the acridness and elevating the esters from Avery's London Ale yeast. The big resin and pine from the the Columbus dry hopping and large doses of Chinook continue to dominate with the grapefruit from the Cascade and Centennial. Floral notes from these two hops have faded leaving a great beer behind.

Pours dark orange amber, a finger of dense froth. Good amount of sticky off-white lacing.

Smells of sweet malt, caramel, earthy hops and alcohol.

Tastes very bitter still. Brown toast, earthy hops, caramel sweetness, booze, and lingering bitterness. Still quite bitter.

Creamy, resinous, sticky mouthfeel. Very smooth. A nice sipper

Reminds me of Bigfoot at a similar age. I haven't had any Avery Barleywines, so I can't comment on how this compares to those.

12oz bottle. Served in a snifter glass. Pours a dark caramel brown body, two finger thick white head, lots of retention, plenty of lacing. Smell is citrus, grapefruit zest, lots of caramel, touch of toffee. Lemon zest. Flavour is caramel, toffee, less of the grapefruit and lemon zest, fair bit of citrus. Drinks like a very sweet triple IPA. Really not my favourite as far as barleywines go; super hoppy without too much in terms of character and citrus as on the aroma. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, lighter than expected, fairly decent carbonation, zesty bitterness on the finish. Not my favourite rendition of barleywine. Too much hops here, to be honest.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Slightly hazed dark copper pour. 2 fingers of creamy white head. Great retention and lacing.

S: Malty and piney. Resinous hops and sweet sugars

T/F: Follows the nose. Big caramel malts/grains. Herbal/pine hop profile... mildly spicy.. earthy. Not much in the way of citrus. Feels like an old school California barleywine... big on the hops. Medium bodied... definitely some oomph with the ABV. Bitter/sweet combo nicely balanced... warming. Sticky on the tongue.

O: A solid old-school style Barleywine. Big flavor... definitely a sipper. Very glad I got to try this one.

12oz bottled 4/12/17 (365 days ago) poured into a snifter at just above fridge temp 9.4% ABV. The beer pours mostly bright orange amber in color with sticky light khaki head. The head recedes to a cap and ring leaving abundant lacing. The aroma is mild with malt and a hint of hops. There is no alcohol presence in the aroma. The taste is semisweet caramel (toffee) up front with bitterness moving in quickly. The hop flavors tend toward oranges and pine and leave a lasting prickly bitterness that sticks to the tongue, no alcohol in taste. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, adequately carbonated and dry in the finish. There is some residual hop oil stickiness and shellac, but the beer remains dry. Overall, excellent. I'm enjoying this much more that regular Bigfoot. I was concerned this would be over the top on bitterness, but it's actually very drinkable and well behaved for a 9.4% beer.
