Beer Camp Across The World: Hoppy Belgian-Style Golden AleBeer Camp Across The World: Hoppy Belgian-Style Golden Ale

Brewed by:
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Belgium's Duvel are the masters of the golden ale-a beer style they helped create-so it was a natural fit for our breweries to combine the style with Sierra Nevada's hop-forward fanaticism. The resulting beer is bright golden and brimming with hop flavor with a pop of bright lemon, and perfectly accented by the fruity and complex character of Duvel's signature yeast.

12 oz. bottle from Beer Camp case poured into a large wine glass. Pour is clear and golden with a thin cap of nearly white foam. Carbonation is light. While I didn't expect a Duvel meringue cap this is a bit too light.

Nose of lemony hops jumps out from the liquid with more yeast notes evident after some agitation to draw up a lacy film. Taste belies the ABV certainly and yet doesn't show much sweetness either. Bit of biscuity white bread on the finish that rolls in to lemony close with just a hint of sweetness. A coarse spice then lingers for a few seconds and interplays with a lightly drying bitterness.

Overall a tasty brew that opens up with warming to offer more balance but still lacks in the carbonation department. Bottle conditioned with an extra volume of co2 and this might be a very different experience.

Brief impressions from a bottle:

APPEARANCE: Billowing white head of ~6 minute retention. Vibrant golden yellow body. Clear, clean, filtered.

AROMA: Lemon zest, Belgian pale malts, well-attenuated yeast, bright floral hop aromatics, some faint dry starchiness, subtly spicy Belgian yeast, clove, fruity ale yeast esters.

Aromatic intensity is above average.

TASTE: Subtlety is the game here, and it's played wonderfully. Subtle yeasty spiciness gives it a classic Belgian character but the attenuation is perfect. Golden malts/pale malts. Floral hop character. Clove. Some lemon.

Well-balanced, well-built. Could be more intricate if we're nitpicking, but as is it's nuanced and adequately complex.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, well-carbonated, crisp, and refreshing in spite of its devilishly well-hidden alcohol by volume. True to style and well-executed.

OVERALL: Duvel delivers in their signature style with this drinkable yet potent ale, and diehard fans of the brewery (like myself) will find it a delightful brew. The tragedy here is this won't be year-round.

Pours an effervescent gold with a sliver of cream colored top. Some lacing & head retention

S: Cloves, a little grainy

T: Follows the nose, a little dry, a little coriander, lemon & green melon, plus juicy-fruit up front. Some green banana peel & dryness, plus cloves once warm. Finishes dry, with green banana peel

MF: Medium body, delicate carbonation

Drinks fairly easy, true to style

Pours a crystal clear straw yellow with a small white head that fades out fairly quickly. Smells of lemon, yeast, green apple. Taste is pears, apple, lemon, pilsner malts, and a finish with grapefruit. Clean, crisp, medium body beer. The beer is as they described, nicely balanced.

12 oz bottle poured into a goblet.

Straw. Excellent clarity. Light carbonation. 1/2 finger of white head.

Pear, golden apple, potpourri, Pilsner malt, cereal grains, and grapefruit.

Pear, golden apple, Pilsner malt, and honey coated spent grains. Potpourri, coriander, and lemon zest. Grapefruit zest and sun dried pine needles linger.

Medium-plus bodied, crisp, silky, semi-dry, and moderately bitter.

Tasty and not overly hopped as I suspected. The hops blend well with what tastes like the classic Duvel. They add some grapefruit zest and dried pine needles to the overall taste profile.

A: Pours a golden color with 2 fingers of head that fades down to a nice cap that sticks around for a good while

S: Lots of yeasty fruitiness up front with a touch of lemon and some bready malt notes

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the yeasty and fruity notes accompanied by the lemon peel and a touch of bitterness. Some light sweet breadiness in there as well. Finishes with lingering light bitterness and yeast undertones

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Very soft and smooth

O: Definitely get a lot of the Duvel yeast influence as well as the SN hop bite. Incredibly easy to drink for 8%. Nothing short of a great collab (as should be expected)

Gold in color with excellent clarity. There's a fingernail of dishwater white around the rim and covering about two thirds of the top. The head nearly all but disappeared after a few minutes and a few sips. It smells exactly like Duvel...with just a bit of lemon added. Sweet Belgian pale malt aroma, faint lemon and grassy hops aroma. The taste is very much so sweet Belgian pale malt forward with just a kiss of lemon and grassy hops to complement it all. The mouth is moderately carbonated, crisp, and dry.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Duvel tulip.

Appearance: Color is a bright golden orange. Lots of rising bubbles and a solid finger of white head that settles into a thinner creamy layer.

Smell: A spicy and juicy Belgian aroma with a scent of yeast, spices, and citrus fruit. Belgian yeast with a scent of pepper, clove, and funk. Citrus hop scent of lemon, orange, and grapefruit along with pineapple. Also some hints of grassy hops. More fruit hints of banana, pear, and apple. Malt hints of wheat, grains, straw, and cracker. Sweet hints of bubblegum and candied sugar. A really nice aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a spicy and fruity Belgian taste with notes of yeast, spices, and citrus fruit. Belgian yeast with notes of clove, pepper, and funk. Citrus hop notes of lemon peel, orange, and grapefruit along with some pineapple. Notes of grassy hops. Belgian style fruit notes of banana, apple, and pear. Malt notes of wheat grains, straw, and biscuit. Sweet notes of bubblegum and candied sugar. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp, spritzy, and drying. Alcohol is hidden well.

Overall: A very good hopped up twist on a Belgian Golden Ale. Nice mix of Belgian yeast spices and fruit.

Appearance - Pours crystal clear and golden yellow in color with a white, near two-finger width head. Good retention, resulting in a thin, consistent layer of suds which builds up around the edge of the glass. A few small, random spots make up most of the lacing.

Smell - The aroma pops with that signature Belgian yeast character; funky banana mild clove spice. Mild lemon and a hint of bready sweetness.

Taste - Flavor is lemony upfront with some mild green banana and a hint of spice. Soft bready sweetness. Bitterness hits mid-taste in the form of grass and citrus pith, and it strengthens as it reaches the finish, leaving an aftertaste that is more bitter than sweet, though I wouldn't call it unbalanced, and it more or less evens out as the brew warms.

Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium in body with fair, spritzy carbonation. Drinks easy (8%?? Drinks like 5-6%) with a crisp, refreshing finish.

Overall - This one works for me. Nice funk and fruit upfront with a fair hoppy finish that's not too aggressive. Be careful with this one as it drinks deceptively. I had to do a double take when I saw it was 8%.
