BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
California, United States
sierranevada.com

Style: Herbed / Spiced Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
The abrasive attitude of Minnesota's Surly Brewing Co. brings an aggressive yet refined approach to creating recipes. We came together to create this easy-drinking but complex ginger-infused lager. It's brewed with hot ginger and a pinch of cayenne to spice up the heat and then dry hopped with an inclusion of oak for a touch of woody vanilla to round out the flavor.

Had this on 2017-06-19 in Columbia, PA from a 16oz can

A - Clear gold with a 1.5-finger white head and mild lace.

S - Rising white bread, honeysuckle, ginger.

T - The lager flavor is a cross between Surly Hell and Sierra Summerfest; both of which I really like. There's some lemon.
The ginger, cayenne and hop flavors and bitterness combine for a snappy and sharp finish with some lingering heat / back of the throat burn.

M - Light-medium body and medium-high carbonation. Smooth at first, then bracing, then dry.

O - As an experimental beer; this works nicely but certainly not something I'd want day-in-and-day-out.

CAN: 16 fl oz. Pull-tab top. Blue and yellow label design. Packaged 04/27/17.

"Ginger-infused lager" ..."Brewed with hot ginger and a pinch of cayenne" "dry hopped with an inclusion of oak for a touch of woody vanilla."

APPEARANCE: Vibrant clear clean filtered yellow-gold. Devoid of yeast/lees. One of the most vibrant bodies I've seen in a beer in the last year.

Head is white and thin, lasing maybe 3 minutes.

AROMA: Ginger bursts out of the glass - anyone would easily recognize it in a blind tasting. I don't get any cayenne or oak. Any malt sweetness seems kept in check, and I don't detect any hop bitterness. Pilsner malts/helles malts.

No overt hoppy notes. No off-notes or booze.

Aromatic intensity is moderately high, with fresh ginger easily dominating.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Pilsner malts, helles malts, fresh ginger. There's a bit of woodiness in the early second act when I know to look for it, but I don't taste any vanilla or oak, and I doubt I'd figure it for a barrel aged beer in a blind tasting.

No overt chili or cayenne heat to my taste, but when I know to look for it I guess I find some cayenne pepper.

Rough and dry yet somehow still refreshing. Light-bodied. Not oily, boozy, gushed, hot, or astringent, but it's a bit harsh and drags on the palate.

Balance is decent, but not dialed-in. It's a gimmicky beer, neither a proper ginger ale nor a complex spiced lager. An interesting experiment and not unpleasant, but it isn't a gestalt harmonious whole of a beer. I do like it for what it is.

OVERALL: Not a beer I'd want a six pack of (or even another can), but it's approachable fare for an herbed lager and the fresh ginger is nice. I wish they'd committed to a more interesting spice profile or at least coaxed out flavour from the ingredients they chose; the relative lack of oak and cayenne or any other vivid flavours aside from the dominant fresh ginger leaves it feeling pretty one-dimensional. Refreshing enough I'll enjoy finishing the can, but far from impressive - especially given the breweries behind it. Without the eclipsing ginger taste, it might be a stellar lager.

This is one of the best Ginger beer I have ever tried! The ginger plus the cayenne just give the beer a great kick which lingers throughout! I wish they would make this in the winter time!

A little chill haze, golden to amber with a finger of quickly dissipating white foam, and mild lacing down the glass. The aroma is ginger, and I get a strong eucalyptus type smell, too. Also, some fruit notes, but, nothing really jumps out specifically. Strong ginger in the flavor, white bread crust, woody, and that medicinal, icy hot note. Very herbal. On the finish, just a bit of heat is there from the cayenne pepper. The feel is full carbonation, dry, and medium body. Quite unusual and interesting brew, here. I like the little bit of heat in the finish, especially with the prominent ginger flavor.

Clear golden, good initial head that fades to almost nothing.

Ginger and peppery heat detectable in the nose.

Starts out with a big blast of ginger, then finishes with a real spice kick.

Mouthfeel HOT.

This was weird, and definitely interesting, but the flavor combo isn't doing it for me.

16 ounce can into lager glass, canned on 4/27/2017. Pours crystal clear deep golden/amber color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon, orange, grapefruit, ginger, pepper, oak, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/earthy hops, ginger, pepper, oak, and pale malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big lemon, orange, grapefruit, ginger, pepper, oak, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/grassy bitterness and ginger/pepper spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, orange, grapefruit, ginger, pepper, oak, cracker, biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/earthy hops, ginger, pepper, oak, and pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitter/spiciness and carbonation, increasing through the glass. Perfectly clean lager flavors with zero yeast notes present. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and bready/grainy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Mildly increasing pepper/ginger heat through the glass. Overall this is a delicious spiced pale lager style! All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/earthy hops, ginger, pepper, oak, and pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. Very flavorful, well balanced, and never overwhelming on any flavor aspect. Ginger/pepper spice presence is pretty much equal. A really enjoyable offering.

A: Pours a golden amber color with 2 fingers of head that fades down to a thin cap

S: Lots of ginger up front with some light oak and peppery spice

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the ginger and then gets a hit of the cayenne which builds up quite a bit of intensity as it lingers. Moderately spicy, which is cut a bit by the oaky vanilla notes that lend some sweetness. Finishes with lingering cayenne heat and light sweetness

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: This one is really gonna be a big hit or miss with people. Personally, I enjoy it quite a bit. Very easy to drink and extremely interesting. I'm sure I'll be in the minority on this one, though

Poured from a can into a pint glass. Clear dark yellow color with a brief head and decent lacing. It has a great ginger smell. The taste is not overwhelmed with ginger and is crisp and pleasant. A bit bitter at the finish.

Brilliantly clear look to the beer. Foam wasn’t as long lasting as most of the beer camp beers. I blame it on the ginger and cayenne. ;) Nose is of ginger, has a dry hopped smell as well. Deep whiffing, I sense that there will be some heat. I say sensing cuz it ain’t that obvious by the smell alone. Spicy ginger starts off. Heat slow to present itself but mid palate on, the heat against my throat intensifies. Cayenne brings it as I don’t reckon the ginger could do it on its own. Concentrate on the ginger and cayenne alone and you might miss the subtle oak character that IS there. Hoppy? Dry Hopped flavour? To me, aboot the same subtle presence as the ok. Light bodied. I would not want this to be thicker. Ok. I am a big fan of this beer. This I would buy multiples of.

Look: It pours golden and is fairly clear. It has a large off white pillow head. Head retention is moderate.

Smell: The aroma is controlled by the ginger with the cayenne in the background. There are low oak elements in the aroma.

Taste; The flavors are upfront with the ginger and cayenne which puts a bit a heat on the palate. There are some woody undertones.

Feel: It has a moderate body towards the light side with a somewhat spicy, hot finish on the palate.

Overall, this beer is decent, but the ginger and cayenne masks most of the other flavors in the beer.

Aroma of ginger, spice, and vanilla.
Very noticeable taste of ginger, with a peppery aftertaste.
Light-bodied, spicy. I liked it.

Pckged 4/27/17 consumed 6/10/17
tall can into belgian tulip glass.

Ultra clear honey-gold body with a thin fine, fizzy, white head - dissolves rapidly and minimal lacing. Smells of spicy ginger, pepper, roses . Tastes very gingery and traces of cayenne pepper, pepper, No traces of oakiness/vanilla here. Quite the spicy and floral beer (thankfully I enjoy ginger). The brew is rather thing but a decent amount of carbonation and fizz on the tongue. Overall very unique but probably not a beer I'd come back to very often.

Gold in color with a trace of light sedimentary haze within the body, which I suspect is from the oak aging. There's a quarter inch of fluffy dishwater white on top. The aroma is packed with invigorating ginger and the underlying aggressiveness of the cayenne. I'm tasting a boldly flavored yet very balanced spiced beer. The ginger is definitely there, yet in a restrained fashion. I thought for sure it would overpower. The cayenne presents itself in the fade, but between the ginger and the oak it is just a nice slow, but steady heat on the tongue. I expected to dislike this beer and was pleasantly surprised!

Poured from a 16 oz. can into a Surly chalice.

Appearance: Pours a bright and clear amber orange. Lots of rising bubbles and a big two finger white head that settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A spicy aroma with a scent of ginger, pepper, and oak. Big scent of ginger. Mild hints of cayenne pepper and oak. Malt scent of caramel, grains, biscuit, and cracker with lager yeast. Sweet hints of honey. A solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a spicy and crisp taste of ginger, pepper, and oak. Big upfront taste of ginger. Moderate notes of cayenne pepper and oak. Malt notes of caramel, grains, biscuit, and cracker along with lager yeast. Some sweet undertones of honey. A pretty nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp and very smooth.

Overall: A pretty solid spiced Lager. Nice ginger flavor with subtle pepper and oak.
