"We just love brewing hoppy beers" is the way Oregon's IPA masters at Boneyard Beer kicked off our collaboration talks. Well, as it turns out, we do, too, so we went all out on this intensely hop-heavy West Coast-style Double IPA. It's bright golden, crisp and brimming with intense citrus and herbal hop flavor, just how we like 'em.

Look: A bit on the yellow side of orange like a wheat beer. I'd almost say it's like blue moon but a little more orange. I didn't have a lot of head on mine, but my can's almost a year old now...
Smell: Wow, this smells exactly like a sweet orange. Not generic "citrus" IPA smell but like a legitimate fully ripe and sweet navel orange.
Taste: Just as sweet as it smells. The sweetness instantly hits you and it's almost like you're drinking orange juice rather than beer. There's a yeasty element to it that works with the orange and pineapple to give you a juicy sweet taste without being overripe with esters. I also get a tiny bit of crackery malt, but the hops are of course the star of the show.
Feel: Sweet, sweet, sweet. To some it might seem a bit one dimensional but I honestly have never tasted such a perfect recreation of a fruit that it's okay that this beer is not floral or roasty or deep and complex. Instead, this beer can be described as a pure depiction of orange. There's only the slightest bit of pine but it's not even necessary for a great work of culinary art.
Overall: It's described as a DIPA and I imagine it's probably not going to impress the DIPA die-hards who have tried Pliny the Younger or some other transcendental IPA. But this is easily the best out of the beer camp batch and punches well above your "extra" IPA beers like Torpedo and Sculpin. It's not particularly "hop bomb-y" and the malt flavors are pretty muted but it doesn't really meant to fit into any particular class I think. It's definitely one of those one-time experimental releases that showcases what you can do with you push the boundaries of brewing.

This pours a resplendent golden tan with a generous cap of foam. What a nose! Even at two months since canning it's bright and vibrant, with loads of lemon peel and citron. Dry and lightly bodied for a DIPA, with a hop forward profile dripping with more of that citrusy goodness. Another winner from the beer camp lineup.

10/16/17...pours hazy cloudy bronze with light layer of white foam. Fruity nose, light malty pine comes through. Patient bitter glides through a malt backbone. Fruity, juicy, some citrus, orange pulpy. Very good. Balanced.

Smell is sweet with floral honey. Taste has a zing to it with citrusy bitterness. The bitterness lingers on the tongue. Cloudy. Wonderful. I wish this was always available.
