Style: Belgian IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Japan's Kiuchi Brewery, makers of the Hitachino Nest beers, have an elegant take on classic beer styles with a uniquely Japanese influence. They Suggested adding Yuzu---an Asian citrus fruit---to a hazy white IPA and we jumped at the chance. What emerged is a hoppy yet refined version of the style with a bright citrus flavor and a spicy finish.

Had on tap at the Sierra Nevada/ Ocean Odyssey's Beer Camp Across the World tap fest. All beers were incredibly fresh. Huge thanks to Travis for allowing me to do independent quality checks on every beer.

Liked this. Characteristic Japanese style of subtle combinations and influences to make something that seems so simple but quickly reveals itself as something deeper and more complex. Enjoyed and would like to have this again and spend a little more time exploring it. Haven't had Hitachino Nest/variants in many years, and was nice to see another very well made beer with interesting character. Nice job.

L: Hazy, translucent yellow with a cap of white head. Medium-poor retention, but a ring remains that leaves some lacing.

S: Big orange peel--ostensibly yuzu--with some lemon-like peel as well. A light green and grassy spiciness, no doubt from the coriander and nutmeg. A little bit of the grainy, wheaty malt as well.

T: A solid grainy backbone throughout; cracker wheat. Evenly distributed tart citrus, the yuzu, which tastes like a cross between orange and lemon peel. A touch of honeydew melon and green grape as well. Just a touch of citrus bitterness on the finish, the dryness of which is complimented by the slowly emerging and subtle spice of the coriander and nutmeg.

F: Medium-light bodied, but well-carbonated. Smooth and somewhat pushing.

O: An interesting and unique sort of witbier-IPA hybrid. Good enough in its own right.

12oz bottle dated 4/26/17 poured into a pitn glass
A: Light orange with a 1/2-finger head
S: Citrus - orange/lime and what I imagine is yuzu
T: Matches the nose though a bit lacking in anything beyond citrus
M: Light/medium bodied, somewhat bitter
O: A solid but ultimately unmemorable IPA

I'm ordinarily not much of an IPA fan but this seemed like something slightly different. Maybe it was how the Yuzu interacted with the hops. Too bad this is a one off because I'd go for this again.

Interesting aroma, the citrus is dank and and herbal, kind of tea-like, rather than bright and zesty. It's intriguing but I don't love it. The flavor is light and prickly with faint citrus up front. The finish is heavy with sweet orange and a lingering earthy spice that is too prominent for my taste.

Clear golden brew is quite attractive. Intensely fruity. Sharp and almost syrupy at the same time. Pencil shavings to finish, must be coriander. Is that yeast or some other fruity-mineral flavoring? Maybe it really is a Belgian influenced beer with the suspicious dry finish, but it's more of an Imperial Wit than an IPA. Citrus peel and a bitter aftertaste. Interesting but not nice enough to finish the bottle. Still, this is more drinkable than some of the others in Sierra Nevada's 2017 Bizarre Box. From the 12 oz bottle.

I'm not a huge Belgian IPA fan and so I was hoping for the yuzu to add an interesting component. It's a solid base beer but there's not much citrus to speak of.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: The Bruery 6-oz. taster
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $22.99 for a Beer Camp Variety 12-Pack
Purchased: June 30, 2017
Consumed: July 1, 2017
Reviewed as: Belgian IPA (originally reviewed as an American IPA, but changed it to Belgian IPA after the first taste)
Misc.: Bottled on April 26, 2017 at 2:22 p.m. PT; Collab between Sierra Nevada and Kiuchi; Split with my wife

First time I actually saw this beer camp variety 12-pack in stores. I had bought every one since 2012 at least, maybe 2011. Was hoping to find if for cheap at Costco, but couldn’t pass this one up for $22.99 at Trader Joe’s. Guessing it retails for $27.99 or so. Had no idea what a Yuzu was heading into this one. Bottle read, “Japan's Kiuchi Brewery, makers of the Hitachino Nest beers, have an elegant take on classic beer styles with a uniquely Japanese influence. They Suggested adding Yuzu---an Asian citrus fruit---to a hazy white IPA and we jumped at the chance. What emerged is a hoppy yet refined version of the style with a bright citrus flavor and a spicy finish.”

Poured a straw, semi-clear color with two fingers of white frothy head. Lots of bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good spotty lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 3.50)

Smelled lemon tart, lime zest, coriander, sugary Citra, stone fruit, Comet, some skunky pine and hints cloves late. (Smell - 3.75)

Taste was much different than the nose. Belgian cloves dominated from the get-go. Also got banana, Circus Peanuts, sugary Citra, lemon tart, coriander peel, bitter juniper, stone fruit, Comet, peach, wheaty grass, dry herbal and pine. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Long, bitter, clovey finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This was a pretty good Belgian IPA. Would probably have it again. (Overall - 3.75)

Beer Camp 2017 White IPA has a medium, white head, a bubbly, clear golden appearance, and some glass lacing. The aroma is of mild white bread, subdued spices and fruit, and a surprising touch of roasted malt. Taste is of those elements, with a growing spice & fruit presence and bitterness, which is never harsh. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Beer Camp 2017 White IPA finishes medium dry and dangerously easy going.
