Style: Belgian IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Japan's Kiuchi Brewery, makers of the Hitachino Nest beers, have an elegant take on classic beer styles with a uniquely Japanese influence. They Suggested adding Yuzu---an Asian citrus fruit---to a hazy white IPA and we jumped at the chance. What emerged is a hoppy yet refined version of the style with a bright citrus flavor and a spicy finish.

Poured from 12-ounce bottle into a Luminarc stemless wine glass. Very pretty pale golden color, with a three-finger white head that left some nice sticky lacing as it receded. This sample had a few months on it, so expectations were not high; however, it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The spices (coriander and nutmeg) were very prominent on the nose and palate, as were the citrusy yuzu and the orange-zest bitterness. There is enough of a light malt backbone to provide a canvas for the other components without upsetting the balance. The finish is quite dry, with a touch of orange zest and a bit of woody astringence (from the nutmeg. maybe?) lingering on the palate. The American and Japanese brewers really nailed the "Belgian" with this collaboration. Well done!

10/22/17...pours pale yellow gold with 1/4 inch head of the foam. Wheaty fruity nose, slightly sweet. Hint of coriander. Wheaty white bitter taste, light stream of fruit in the back. Citrus with a spicy finish. Creative IPA blend.

Pours a clear gold color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and decent lacing. Smells of pale malt, grass, floral, slight wheat, hint of sweet malt, slight spicy hops, and slight floral hops. Fits the style of a Belgian IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. There is also a slight dryness. Tastes of pale malt, grass, floral, slight wheat, hint of sweet malt, slight spicy hops, and slight floral hops. Overall, average appearance, aroma, and body.

A: Bright yellow in color with a large white head.

S: Malt, and a touch of squash, or perhaps melon. I'm not getting a lot of hops, but there is something a little musk like in there.

T: Light malt, with citrus notes, as well as something a touch earthy and funky.. perhaps still a touch of a musk flavor.

M: Medium thick in feel, with lower carbonation, and a somewhat creamy mouthfeel.

O: Not bad, but it doesn't really stand out for me. I'm not sure what the yuzu does, and the spices are a bit missed.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Nearly clear golden yellow pour. 2 fingers of white head... falls fast with a solid ring of lacing.

S: Tropical and tart... citrusy and floral.

T/F: Light crackery grains... tart and tropical hop profile. Lemon/citrus (probably the yuzu, but I can't say as I've ever had yuzu to compare). Mildly spicy... the coriander and nutmeg are both present, and play nicely off the hop bitterness and mild citrusy tart flavors. Medium to light in body... effervescent carbonation.

O: Delicious... liked this one a LOT more than I thought I would, and the flavors played nicely with each other. Makes me want to find some stuff by Kiuchi for a sampling.

I get the spices pretty quickly. Coriander is particularly apparent, but the others show and blend too. Hopping is certainly background with some grass and soft spicing.
Head leaves in short order over a cloud golden ale.
Again the spicing over the hops. But the later shows in the growing bitterness that starts mid and finished well. Again more grassy and other hop aspects. Malt is light but there is soft grains. Bitterness grows through out and becomes a more dominant taste, especially in the very long finish.
Carbonated adequately to more than. Medium body. Shot of warmth shows after a pull or two.
Not much of an IPA unless you like a glass of bitterness. The spicing is heavy and the hops are light.

This is a golden clear beer with a firm white head. The aroma is fruity, spicy, and has a hint of malt. Fruit....fleshy and ripe fruit....The taste is balanced, with a nice spicy bitterness in the mid-taste. The finish is clean and hoppy. Great brew.

Look: Amber, light orange. Not much to say really.

Smell: Ah, one of the few IPAs in the Beer Camp pack. Citrus, pine, and strangely a light hint of sweet malts, almost bock-like. There's also a little bit of an herbal spice to it, like coriander seed. But the real dominant note is the citrus peel from the yuzu. It's somewhere between a lemon and a mandarin, more sour than orange but sweeter than lemon. It might not be tremendously unique given that every west coast IPA has a strong citrus character, but there is a subtle difference that showcases what yuzu is about. Or maybe it will just smell like oranges if you've never had yuzu.

Taste: Citrus, but malty. The malt in the nose wasn't a trick, as this beer is about the same malt level as Sierra Nevada Pale Ale but the malt is sweet rather than bready or crackery. Other than that, there's the yuzu. Sweet and sour, but I wouldn't say it's really complex.

Feel: Coming in at 7% ABV, it actually doesn't leave that much in terms of feel. If you've been numbed by high quality west coast IPAs, the finish on this is actually kind of underwhelming. Where's the hops? It finishes a bit unremarkably, with some citrus peel and spice.

Overall: It at least tastes good, but it somewhat lacking in depth. I get that they're trying to showcase the yuzu and it's a Belgian style, but a Yuzu Torpedo or Hop Hunter would have been killer. One thing that I'd love is an IPA or "extra" IPA version of Sidecar Pale Ale, but despite being labeled as an IPA, this isn't it. The hops just aren't there.

Bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours golden yellow with a frothy off white head that settles to a light layer and leaves some nice lacing.

S: Bright, zesty citrus, spicy, lightly fruity, a little wheat twang, crackery malt, and a touch of sweetness.

T: Bright, citrus, lemon and grapefruit, slightly peppery spicy, fruity notes, wheat twang, crackery malt, and a touch of sweetness.

M: Light to medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: Light and refreshing.

Bought a variety 12-pack $23.99 from Tamuras
Light golden color
Smell of citrus
Medium-light mouthfeel
Medium-high carbonation
Slight bitterness finish, citrus lemon taste, light tasting
Overall a fairly refreshing beer that would be good for the summer.
