Japan's Kiuchi Brewery, makers of the Hitachino Nest beers, have an elegant take on classic beer styles with a uniquely Japanese influence. They Suggested adding Yuzu---an Asian citrus fruit---to a hazy white IPA and we jumped at the chance. What emerged is a hoppy yet refined version of the style with a bright citrus flavor and a spicy finish.

12 oz bottle poured into a nonic.
Appearance
Straw. Good clarity. Light carbonation.
Nose
Lemon, tangerine, honey, wheat, bread dough, and coriander.
Taste
Big lemony citrus and zest presumably from the yuzu. Wheaty malts, honey, and sourdough bread. Coriander and pine peppercorn. Slight tangerine juiciness.
Mouthfeel
Medium bodied, crisp, off-dry, and moderately bitter.
Overall
It could have done without the coriander and nutmeg or at least to a lighter extent. Otherwise the yuzu creates lemon flavors and aromas better than the real thing.

Bottle from 2017 Beer Camp case. Pale golden with small, tight white head, fine streams of carbonation. Light citrusy aroma, lemons. Taste strays into citrus flavors too, but has a nice hops bite on the finish. Lightweight in feel, seems dry, bitterness lingers for a while.

Poured from 12-ounce bottle into a Luminarc stemless wine glass. Very pretty pale golden color, with a three-finger white head that left some nice sticky lacing as it receded. This sample had a few months on it, so expectations were not high; however, it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The spices (coriander and nutmeg) were very prominent on the nose and palate, as were the citrusy yuzu and the orange-zest bitterness. There is enough of a light malt backbone to provide a canvas for the other components without upsetting the balance. The finish is quite dry, with a touch of orange zest and a bit of woody astringence (from the nutmeg. maybe?) lingering on the palate. The American and Japanese brewers really nailed the "Belgian" with this collaboration. Well done!

10/22/17...pours pale yellow gold with 1/4 inch head of the foam. Wheaty fruity nose, slightly sweet. Hint of coriander. Wheaty white bitter taste, light stream of fruit in the back. Citrus with a spicy finish. Creative IPA blend.

Pours a clear gold color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and decent lacing. Smells of pale malt, grass, floral, slight wheat, hint of sweet malt, slight spicy hops, and slight floral hops. Fits the style of a Belgian IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. There is also a slight dryness. Tastes of pale malt, grass, floral, slight wheat, hint of sweet malt, slight spicy hops, and slight floral hops. Overall, average appearance, aroma, and body.

A: Bright yellow in color with a large white head.
S: Malt, and a touch of squash, or perhaps melon. I'm not getting a lot of hops, but there is something a little musk like in there.
T: Light malt, with citrus notes, as well as something a touch earthy and funky.. perhaps still a touch of a musk flavor.
M: Medium thick in feel, with lower carbonation, and a somewhat creamy mouthfeel.
O: Not bad, but it doesn't really stand out for me. I'm not sure what the yuzu does, and the spices are a bit missed.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip
L: Nearly clear golden yellow pour. 2 fingers of white head... falls fast with a solid ring of lacing.
S: Tropical and tart... citrusy and floral.
T/F: Light crackery grains... tart and tropical hop profile. Lemon/citrus (probably the yuzu, but I can't say as I've ever had yuzu to compare). Mildly spicy... the coriander and nutmeg are both present, and play nicely off the hop bitterness and mild citrusy tart flavors. Medium to light in body... effervescent carbonation.
O: Delicious... liked this one a LOT more than I thought I would, and the flavors played nicely with each other. Makes me want to find some stuff by Kiuchi for a sampling.
