Beer Camp Across The World: White IPA With YuzuBeer Camp Across The World: White IPA With Yuzu
Notes: Japan's Kiuchi Brewery, makers of the Hitachino Nest beers, have an elegant take on classic beer styles with a uniquely Japanese influence. They Suggested adding Yuzu---an Asian citrus fruit---to a hazy white IPA and we jumped at the chance. What emerged is a hoppy yet refined version of the style with a bright citrus flavor and a spicy finish.

Mostly clear golden color with churning effervescence and two-plus fingers of billowing, long-lasting, off-white head. Modest soapy lacing.

Delicate, but definite, citrus and spice in the nose. The citrus -- presumably the yuzu is a little earthy --somewhat like a mandarin orange, somewhat like white grapefruit. The spice may be nutmeg, but also has a hint of coriander in it.

Light tasting up front with a peppery bite, a fairly yeasty backend, mild bitterness, a touch of soap and a lingering citrus aspect in the aftertaste. There's a ghost of the nutmeg behind that showing long after the beer is swallowed.

Medium bodied and a touch creamy, with a very slight prickliness to the feel.

I actually like this better than the traditional Hitachino Nest White Ale. It's less juicy with a much cleaner taste. Very refreshing, especially on a hot day.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip
Bottled 4/26/17

A- pours a slightly hazy pale golden color with a thin creamy white head that has good retention

S- soft citrus fruit aroma up front, candied lemon peel, some spicy Belgian-style yeast, light toasted malt

T- light citrus flavors follow the aroma, almost a mix of tangerine and peach, assuming that's the yuzu. Mid-palate gives some spicy and earthy Begian yeast that gives some musty notes. The finish gives more yuzu, with a slightly sweet bready malt linger

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a crisp dry finish

O- the citrus notes of the fruit work well with the spicy yeast element, good drinkability

Hazy gold with two fingers of ten minute white head. Nice rings of lace.
Smell is spice from coriander and belgian yeast.
Taste is mostly a better than average White IPA with the spice and fruity hops leading the way.
Mouthfeel is light to medium with good carbonation. Finish is lightly dry and fruity.
Not normally a big fan of White IPAs but I enjoyed this one quite a lot.

Clear and golden with a finger of white head that slowly settles down to a ring and leaves some nice lacing on the glass. The aroma has some Hefeweizen characteristics of banana and cloves, and a yeasty and wheat quality. Maybe some citrus fruit qualities, but, nothing too distinct, and I'm not familiar with Yuzu. In the flavor there are the same qualities as in the aroma. Yeasty, wheaty, bready, and fruity. The bitterness is very mild, but building as you drink it. The feel is medium full body, soft, dry, and full carbonation. It's a hopped up Hefeweizen, and it tastes pretty good, to me.

A: Pours a golden orange color, with a slight chilled hazed. A two finger white head forms and recedes after a minute, with some nice lace behind.
S: Phenolic yeast and fruity esters up front and center in the nose. Peppery, spicy, citrus fruits. Fairly simple, but enjoyable for what it is.
T: Like the nose, phenolls yeast and esters up front. Pepper, clove, citrus, and grassy hops. The grassy bitterness comes on strong at the end. Enjoyable, but doesn't hit on all cylinders for me.
M/D: A light to medium body. Crisp and effervescent carbonation. Fairly clean and dry. Simple and easy to drink. Something I can come back to with ease.

An OK White IPA. Nothing out of the ordinary. There are more phenols here than wheat. I was hoping for more wheat, citrus and fruity bite, but it is still something I am enjoying.

Pale yellow with decent initial head.

Citrus and light fruits in the nose

Coriander, yeast, citrus, nutmeg. Nicely balanced, not a spice bomb.

Pleasantly effervescent.

This was one of the highlights of the pack, nicely balanced I thought.

12 oz. bottle dated 04/26/17

Pours mostly clear slightly foggy gold with a dense creamy white foam head. Smells like wheat, banana, clove, peppercorn spice, fresh yuzu, orange citrus, lime, lemon, grapefruit, nutmeg, coriander, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like wheat, banana, clove, peppery spice, fresh yuzu, orange citrus, lime, lemon, grapefruit, nutmeg, coriander, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy and smooth with moderate carbonation. Overall a really nice and unique white IPA.

That owl brewery Hitachino I think is the name of the beer/brewery paired here with venerable giant Sierra Nevada to make a white ipa with some exotic fruit in it. Pours a dull cloudy yellow, similar to Blue Moon, 1/2" white head. Aroma didn't yield much, certainly not whatever the Yuzu fruit is. Mild wheat.

Taste, more bitter than I was thinking it would be, still the Yuzu fruit, wouldn't know it was there if the label didn't say anything about it. Its just a meh middle of the road kind of beer for me. Non descript hop flavor in a white beer. Fruit lacking much of the staying and impactful power. The yeast is definitively Belgian, and is the powerhouse of the taste/flavor component of the beer. Usual spice rack and phenolic suspects there, paired with Cascade hops it seems.

Had this on 2017-06-20 in Columbia, PA from a 12oz bottle

A - Clear straw-yellow with a 2-finger pillowy white head and nice lace

S - Quite spicy; grassy/herbal and very light umamai. White bread, touch of lemon and coriander.

T - Very spicy and strongly Yuzu flavored, which while different; is enjoyable. Some Belgian yeast character. Wheat bread, light citrus flesh sweetness; then citrus/Yuzu zest yielding restrained, acerbic bitterness.

M - Light-medium body and medium-high carbonation. Sparkling, scrubbing and dry.

O - My initial flavor impression of the strong Yuzu made me consider whether I'd get to the bottom of the glass but as I've taken time to write this review, I've also come to appreciate the unique qualities of this brew, and yes; I did finish the glass. Like other beers in this collaborative 12-pack; it's a fun experiment that didn't produce an go-to beer for me; but I guess that's not the point.

Clear, lightly sparkling gold with a moderately large pearl white foam that slowly bubbles down to a thin film and ring.

Aroma is really faint, with a citrus I'm less accustomed to, obviously the yuzu, as well as orange, bready malt, and a hint of rug that is difficult to determine whether it's nutmeg or hops.

Taste is much more bitter than expected, but more on the fruit spectrum with rind, than pine. It mellows out with a couple of sips, bringing yuzu-esque lemon-orange, a slight hint of peppery spice, toasted bread and oh, there's the pine. The nutmeg does not impose, but I'm not sure if it adds complexity either. Having the second half of the bottle with some food, it almost comes across as phenolic Belgian spice.

Body is moderate, softly crisp, finishing semi-dry.

Unique and different... Earthy and citrusy.... I enjoyed this. The yeast mutes the hops somewhat leading to that earthy flavor which I'm really digging... I could and would drink several of these

Poured from 12oz short bottle into Spiegelau IPA glass. Bottled on April 26th 2017.

L: Just slight haze through this pale yellow beer with an incredible retentive off-white two finger head. Incredulous lacing.

S: Some different aroma here, some Belgian yeast type notes with some odd citrus which I am guessing is the Yuzu. Also some spicy notes. Slightly tart backnote as well.

T: Again lots of Belgian yeast at play here with some unique tart and citrusy fruit which again I am assuming is the Yuzu. Very unique and honestly quite tasty.

F: Light, crisp and very dry.

O: So far, this is the best Beer Camp beer from SN. I have a lot more to go so won't be surprised if there are some other that are better but this is quite tasty.

Appearance: Clean golden with lovely white head and waves of lace.

Aroma: Unusual citrus and spice.

Taste: More unusual citrus (the yuzu is rare in the US) alongside spicy hops and a peppery finish. Fruit notes are citrus but resemble lemon and the spice (coriander and nutmeg) add another creative element to this IPA. Refreshing and solid, and one I’d gladly revisit.

Interesting. If the recipe is to be worked on, here is what I'd consider.
Looks. Give it some foam and lace. It looks more like cider than beer.
Smell. Give it something other than sweet fruit.
Taste. Give it more hops. This is an IPA, after all.
Feel. Less bone-dry. This runs the risk of not going with too many foods. Dry is good to clean the palate, but there needs to be sweet on the buds to stimulate them for the food.
OA: White IPA needs some chemistry to go with food.
