Style: Belgian IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Japan's Kiuchi Brewery, makers of the Hitachino Nest beers, have an elegant take on classic beer styles with a uniquely Japanese influence. They Suggested adding Yuzu---an Asian citrus fruit---to a hazy white IPA and we jumped at the chance. What emerged is a hoppy yet refined version of the style with a bright citrus flavor and a spicy finish.

Pours with a little chill haze and a fat creamy head of off white foam. Pungent grapefruit, dank weeds, earthy spice and an exotic citrusy fruit. Drinks bitter but not harshly . Lemony, dry, crisp.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip
Bottled 4/26/17

A- pours a slightly hazy pale golden color with a thin creamy white head that has good retention

S- soft citrus fruit aroma up front, candied lemon peel, some spicy Belgian-style yeast, light toasted malt

T- light citrus flavors follow the aroma, almost a mix of tangerine and peach, assuming that's the yuzu. Mid-palate gives some spicy and earthy Begian yeast that gives some musty notes. The finish gives more yuzu, with a slightly sweet bready malt linger

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a crisp dry finish

O- the citrus notes of the fruit work well with the spicy yeast element, good drinkability

Pretty gold color. Nice white head with plenty of lace.
Sweet fruit and spice aroma.
Smacked in the face with coriander. There's some citrus and maybe some mango. Bitter aftertaste.
Too much coriander and too bitter.
No mas.

Gold in color with a quarter inch of frothy off white head. moderate lacing. The aroma is of a very light citrus with the faintest dose of coriander and grassy hops. The taste is very clean with light citrus and a very restrained dose of coriander. The mouth is very light, crisp, and refreshing. Truly unique and tasty.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy golden orange. Moderate amount of bubbles and a solid finger of white head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A spicy and juicy Belgian IPA style aroma with a scent of spices and citrus. Belgian yeast with a scent of white pepper, clove, coriander, and nutmeg spicing. Good scent of yuzu with citrus fruit hints of lime, orange peel, lemon, grapefruit, and mango with some pineapple. Malt scent of wheat, grains, and cracker. A really nice aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a spicy and juicy Belgian IPA style taste with notes of spices and citrus fruit. Belgian yeast with spice notes of pepper, clove, coriander, and nutmeg. Good taste of the yuzu with some citrus notes of lime, lemon zest, orange peel, mango, and grapefruit along with pineapple. Malt notes of wheat, grains, and cracker. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp, juicy, and very smooth.

Overall: A very solid take on a Belgian style IPA. Nice mix of spices and hops with a nice citrus kick from the yuzu.

Should have been a regular IPA (with barley versus wheat) since the yuzu is too prevalent, in turn, overwhelming the tradition smooth nature of a regular white IPA.

Appearance - Pours golden yellow with a slight haze. White, two-finger width head displays good retention before peeling back to a thin, consistent layer of surface suds, thickening up around the edge of the glass. Not much for lacing, jut a small patch that decided to stick around.

Smell - Smells like a hefeweizen with wheat, clove-like spice and a hint of banana. Light citrus.

Taste - Fortunately it doesn't follow the nose. Wheat upfront that is quickly enveloped by a fruity citrus character and a moderate spice bite. Spice strengthens in the finish as the citrusy note turns from fruity to moderate pith bitterness that lingers in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium in body with moderate carbonation. Easy drinker with a slightly dry finish and a hint of chalkiness.

Overall - Fair White IPA. It's been a while since I've had one, as its not my favorite style, but this one doesn't strike me as great.
