Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Sierra Nevada Stout s a full-bodied American version of the traditional black ale. It is perfectly balanced with big roasted malt flavors and earthy, whole-cone hops.

In 1980, when we were building our fledging brewery, we needed a beer with bold flavors to test the new, hand-built brewhouse. That first brew was a stout rich with roasted malts and earthy, whole-cone American hops. We liked that original stout so much that we've kept it as we've grown. Decades later it still reminds us of that early pioneering spirit.

Packaged 1/27/2014 so this bottle was 3 years old. Has plenty of carbonation doesn't really taste like a 3 year old beer. Has such a light taste wow! Roasty, smooth then gone. great stuff

Poured into a narrow pint glass: color is solid black, head is light tan with fine bubbles, head presents at least 1 inch thick then dissipates to a solid top with some lacing on the glass.

Smell is light roast, some cocoa, some coffee beans.

Taste is simple but well constructed with moderate roast, cocoa, light coffee notes, light sweetness and grassy hops.

Mouthfeel is crisp, carbonated with pleasant bitterness.

Overall a good solid stout, simple construction with nothing to out off place, maybe some lighter roastiness than anticipated.

Time to revisit a classic with some good old fashioned note taking. From a 7-7-17 bottle.

It's black appearance is complimented beautifully with deep garnet hues when held to light. The khaki head is present, and not all that impressive. It leaves a small island on the surface, and minimal spotty patches of lace.

Lightly roasted coffee meets with heavily toasted white bread, right smack in the middle. A touch of hop spice fights for a presence.

The flavor is much the same, but the clear winner of the clash is the toasted bread. There is a mild cola and molasses like taste leading up to an earthy finish.

Sweet start, bitter by roast finish. Medium slick feel and medium carbonation transition into a dry and lingering end.

A wonderful easy drinking stout. One that can be enjoyed throughout the day, and may become my go-to cold weather drinker thanks to it's low(ish) abv and high quality flavor. Very happy to revisit. Cheers!

Purchased a six-pack at Weis Markets. If I have had this before it has been 30 years. I don't normally have a list of "whales" but this and SN Porter are two beers I have been wanting to get. And I have to say it has been worth it!
Very dark brown with a pleasant and lasting tan head. Aroma is fresh hops and roasted barley. Flavour emphasizes both of those attributes, clearly reminiscent of the sort of departure from "standard" known by all home brewers. It's dry without being cloying, toasty without being overly so and has a clean and fresh quality often lacking in packaged craft beers. Will definitely buy again, just hope I don't have to wait so long next time.

Dark brown beer with nice tan head, good retention.
All attributes of stout are here, some salinity, good hopping.
Medium body, soft carbonation.

Sierra's stout is perhaps more hoppy than any other stout. It feels subtly fruity and so it is much more enjoyable than a normal dry stout would be. Roast is full on but the body is much more interesting and richer than anything else. They admit it on the label, having used whole cone American hops, this is stout, West Coast style! This is the only stout I like!

Definitely one of the best stouts I've had. It has beautiful foamy color with a sticky, in your face, smacky flavor. Deliciously malty, but not too sweet.
