Brewed by:
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Sierra Nevada Stout s a full-bodied American version of the traditional black ale. It is perfectly balanced with big roasted malt flavors and earthy, whole-cone hops.

In 1980, when we were building our fledging brewery, we needed a beer with bold flavors to test the new, hand-built brewhouse. That first brew was a stout rich with roasted malts and earthy, whole-cone American hops. We liked that original stout so much that we've kept it as we've grown. Decades later it still reminds us of that early pioneering spirit.

Definitely one of the best stouts I've had. It has beautiful foamy color with a sticky, in your face, smacky flavor. Deliciously malty, but not too sweet.

355ml bottle poured into a pint glass.

Very deep mahogany brown to almost crude black in color, it tops with thick foamy brown head that withstands with pretty good retention before slowly collapsing to a very lasting bubble sheet atop and leaving some lacing on the glass-side.

Big caramel in a nose, along with big roasted, dark bread, toasted biscuit, brown sugar, coffee, cinnamon, vanilla, all from malt while hop with notes of mild fruit, spice, and earthiness.

It is so straightforward through the palate sensation with the lead of heavily roasted flavor together with notes of dark bread, toasted biscuit, brown sugar, and coffee sourness from malt. Hop is also there to lend its earthiness, fruitiness, along with the bitterness at the end that is also reinforced some partial bitterness from roasted malt.

The body is light with rather crisp feeling and quite smooth mouthfeel through the palate. The overall feeling is just right with a pleasantly dry finish.

Light, crisp, balance, and very easy drinkable Stout, I can drink this all day long.

It pours a medium to dark brown yielding a jet black body with a two inch foamy tan head. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen. The head must last at least a good three and a half minutes even after I took several sips. There is some nice foamy rings left. The smell has a nice combination between chocolate and coffee with some added hops. The taste is robust and bold with the previously mentioned smells coming through with an added maltiness. The palate is about a medium and there is nothing harsh on the tongue. It has a decent drinkability. Overall, I would say this is a solid American Stout that I would have again.

Pours out a as a very dark beer with some ruby hints around the very fringe of my glass. Three fingers of a tightly packed tan head. The head actuallt seemed to open to allow some larger bubbles. Nice lacing down my glass.

Smells of nice darkly roasted malts, some black coffee and a bit of hop notes in the background.

Taste is of some heavily roasted malts. Bitterness comes out of that roasted malt as well. The roast seems a bit heavy on the flavor but not overly charred. There is some dark coffee flavor and just a twinge of sweet in here as well.

Mouth borders on medium with a slick wet finish.

This is a stout that is available year round at a very easy to purchase price point. That alone is worth quite a bit because this is a very high quality, well crafted stout. I look forward to the winter holiday dinners and picking some of this up for a nice after dinner, served with my pumpkin pie, beer.

Pours a dark brown with a light tan layer of thin foam. Smells of roasted malts, chocolate, and some mild dark coffee. Taste follows the nose to a with the coffee being slightly burnt. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Overall this is a wonderful stout, one of my favorites now. Really reminds me of Black Butte oddly enough.

Strong head formation with OK retention. Tons of wonderful lacing; solid black brew.

Aroma features dark fruit, grapes, caramel, toffee, and roast. Wonderful for a stout, really, although there is some oxidation.

Flavor features big roasted malt notes: chocolate, coffee, roast, and dark fruit. A touch of ash on the finish. Semi-sweet and fairly bitter, mostly from the roast. There's a quality to the balance of bitter and malt flavors that reminds me of Narwhal.

Medium-full bodied. Incredible amount of flavor for such a low ABV package; could easily pass as an imperial stout.

Look - Pours black with some dark brown highlights, a thin ring of light brown head.
Aroma - Sweet and sour, citrus from hops, dark fruit, subtle coffee
Taste - Loads of tangy/sour milk chocolate, hops are noticeable throughout with earth and citrus, good amount of bitterness, malt is full bodied, creamy and roasted. Finishes with lingering citrus hop bitterness and a bit of coffee. Really complex.
Feel - Not quite full bodied but bigger than medium, carbonation is relatively low with fine bubbles. Creamy and smooth.

Overall - Very hoppy for a stout, but still has a good balance. Flavors really shine through as it warms.

Solid shiny black with a thin, light tan blanket.

Smell is slightly spicy, piney chicory coffee, with similar hints of citrus that also come through in their Porter.

Bitter cocoa, sweet coffee and roasted malt all come together as one solid flavor.

Full, soft froth, but semi-dry to dry.
