Notes / Commercial Description:
Sierra Nevada Stout s a full-bodied American version of the traditional black ale. It is perfectly balanced with big roasted malt flavors and earthy, whole-cone hops.

In 1980, when we were building our fledging brewery, we needed a beer with bold flavors to test the new, hand-built brewhouse. That first brew was a stout rich with roasted malts and earthy, whole-cone American hops. We liked that original stout so much that we've kept it as we've grown. Decades later it still reminds us of that early pioneering spirit.

Poured into a snifter.

5.0 A: Black color. Two and a half fingers of frothy tan head. Retention is very good and tons of lacing is left. Very nice.

3.0 S: Solidly roasty with a dry almost biscuity-like maltiness. Notes of semi-sweet chocolate, floral hops, and a slight earthiness. Maybe it's due to all the imperial stouts I've had recently, but this seems to have lost something since the last time I had it.

3.5 T: Better than the nose, the chocolate comes out more. Moderately roasty with smoky notes. Light caramel and a dry graininess.

4.0 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Good creaminess for the body. Nice here.

3.5 D: Nice, easy drinking stout. SN makes good beer.

Bottle from Wing Central in the U district. Poured into pint glass. Appearance was that of any other stout, dark/opaque/murky. Small tan head that leaves quickly. Aroma was a lot of coffee, roasted and burnt malts. Taste was a lot of roast flavors and coffee, very slight chocolate if any at all. Palate was powerful, makes its way through the entire mouth. Overall it was decent. Probably a bit inflated rating after drinking IPA’s all day (not a fan of IPA). Very mild for a stout, but not exactly my favorite. There are better stouts out there.

Poured into a snifter

A: rich, dark chocolate brown with a tan, one-fourth finger head that leaves big bubbles; fine lacing

S: chicory, malt, toffee, oak; earthy.

T: dark chocolate and coffee merge for a very pleasant combo. Slightly hoppy finish with lingering coffee flavor.

M: Medium with great carbonation. Creamy smooth.

O: Warm, inviting. A great sipping stout. What a nice surprise. This is one of the better stouts I've tried. Sierra Nevada keeps ringing the bell. Recommended.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick, impenetrable consistency. There was a big, creamy, tan-colored, long-lasting head. Excellent lacing.

S: An almost undetectable aroma of malt, chocolate and a little hops.

T: Tasted of malt (lots of it), a little hops, dark chocolate, and some coffee (not as much). A very mellow flavor - for a stout - but solid.

M: A good amount of carbonation with dry, smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: I don't know that I liked this beer as much as others on this site, but it was fairly drinkable.

A - Pours a clean looking dark brown, pillowy tan head. Nice lacing and retention

S - Excellent, robust roasted barely is what I'm getting. The following piney hops is prevalent as well, and pleasant.

T - That aroma closely mirrored the taste. Nice roasty malt flavors, a bit of caramel sweetness. It's been my experience that I don't like "malty" beers that have strong piney hop profile as well, and this holds true here. Just can't get with the two opposing flavors.

M - Nice medium body, slick, appropriate carbonation.

O - I think this beer is well executed with some complexity and robust flavors, it's just not my preference.
