Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Sierra Nevada Stout s a full-bodied American version of the traditional black ale. It is perfectly balanced with big roasted malt flavors and earthy, whole-cone hops.

In 1980, when we were building our fledging brewery, we needed a beer with bold flavors to test the new, hand-built brewhouse. That first brew was a stout rich with roasted malts and earthy, whole-cone American hops. We liked that original stout so much that we've kept it as we've grown. Decades later it still reminds us of that early pioneering spirit.

Pours out a deep black with a solid 1/2 inch head, lasting lace.

Full of roasted chocolate notes, dark malts, earth and slight citrus.

Chocolate, minerals, roasted cocoa, slight citrus, simple and well balanced. Thick and smooth.

An easy to find, inexpensive but well crafted stout!

Poured out of a bottle into glass. Pours very dark brown but not black.

Smell is lots of chocolate, roast malts.

Taste is malt, chocolate, coffee, what you'd expect from a stout. Finish is a little bitter but not overly so. Taste overall is not as "big" as some other stouts, but it's very "good", which is just as important.

Mouthfeel is, like the taste, on the light side for a stout.

Overall this is a really good-tasting beer, and the fact that it's not a huge hulking stout of a stout is actually a good thing, because this is a yummy stout that I could sit and have several of. It's not as flavorful or bitter as Old Rasputin, not as big and sweet as Sam Adams Imperial Stout, but I'd rather have three or four of these than even two of those at a sitting. To compare it to something of comparable ABV, it's better than Guinness.
