Pours surprisingly thick and sits cola brown in the glass with a thin cap of head. Not much barrel or coconut notes in the nose. Good amount of chocolate in the taste and the coconut adds a subtle sweetness even if not much coconut flavor per se. Feels silky and smooth with just the right amount of carbonation. Overall a solid barrel aged adjunct stout but needs some more barrel and coconut character to make it world class.

Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger foamy tan head that was packed with tiny bubbles and dissipated very slowly, leaving good foamy lacing that slid down the glass quicker than expected. A good looking stout even with the minimal lacing.

Smells of dark chocolate, vanilla, cocoa powder, toasted coconut, molasses, soy sauce, maple syrup, bourbon, oaky notes, peat moss, brown sugar, burnt coffee grinds, faint piney notes and milk chocolate. Super malty with a lot of barrel and chocolate notes adding a dynamic mix of booze, malty sweetness and nice coconut.

Flavor is very much like the nose with dark chocolate, vanilla, cocoa powder, molasses, soy sauce, maple syrup, bourbon, toasted coconut, bakers chocolate, oaky notes, light peat moss, charred wood, smoked malts, brown sugar, burnt coffee grinds, faint piney notes, espresso beans and milk chocolate. Lots of roasted malts and overall roasty notes blend with the sugary sweetness of the barrels, cocoa and toasted coconut. This is rich but not cloyingly sweet, and like most Sierra Nevada BBA stouts it is refined and quite well balanced.

Mouthfeel is on the thin side, but that's the only real knock as this masks the ABV perfectly and slides down like a porter. The barrel notes bring out a lot of flavor and I'm sure the age on this bottle helped smooth things out as it was near perfect in drink-ability for a barrel aged Narwhal variant.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter

Black, thick creamy light brown head

Cocoa powder, vanilla, and coconut (somewhat muted) in the nose.

Flavor opens up quite a bit more vs the aroma. Chocolate and bourbon up front with coconut creeping in on the finish.

Very smooth, velvety, appropriately low carbonation.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a half finger dark khaki head with great retention and thick lacing. Aroma of slightly sweet dark toasted malt, cocoa, coconut and a little vanilla. Flavor is dark toasted malt with light char, dark chocolate, coconut, oaky vanilla with more char developing into a roasty, charry dark malt finish with lingering oak and light smoke. Medium bodied with light creaminess and sharp carbonation. A full flavored barreled imperial stout with nice chocolate notes, deeper than expected for cocoa, and light, but appropriate amount of coconut. Nice development of the malt char and a good finish with well balanced flavors and great malt support. Alcohol well covered. Very enjoyable. I was late picking one of these up, but glad I did.

750ML Bottle poured into a tupil

Smell - Bourbon, chocolate, cocoa, fudge

Taste - Fudge, dark Chocolate, caramel, bourbon, oak, slightest, faintest hint of coconut at the very back end

Mouthfeel - Full bodied, medium carbonation, sticky, bourbon and fudge upfront, dark chocolate in the middle, the back end has the faintest hint of coconut - if you hadn't told be this had coconut, I might not have picked it up

Overall - I enjoyed this beer - has more of a thick stout feel versus the base Narwhal. My only complaint is that the coconut is barely present. otherwise, an enjoyable imperial stout

Price Point - $19.99/750ML bottle

The beer pours a nice chocolate brown head that dissipates at a nice and moderate pace. The beer itself is pretty good looking. It's a nice black dark chocolate color with a good melted chocolate texture to it is definitely appealing.

The smell is good with a decent dominance of a light hop character with cocoa and a light sweet chocolate to it. The bourbon is fairly light compared to the other notes but adds nice accent to the other notes. The toasted coconut is pretty nice and doesn't smell fake. It's definitely good.

The taste is fantastic. The toasted coconut is more of a secondary note but it definitely complements the nice moderate bitter cocoa and sweet chocolate involved. Interestingly, the bourbon and alcohol are fairly faint. Rather, the toasted coconut is pretty present all the way to the finish and has a bit of a caramel note too.

The feel is pretty good. It's a heavy bodied beer but has the texture of chocolate syrup with very light carbonation. It's drinkable but not dangerously so.

Overall, this is definitely one of the better Narwhal variations. It's worth getting and the price. It may not have super powerful barrel aging notes but the barrel seems to be designed to supplement the coconut and Narwhal rather than being a feature.

I don't see a bottle date listed. The bomber that I have says "11.9% ALC BY VOL."

Appearance: It has a black body with a short khaki head that slowly fades out to a creamy ring. Not much retention but that isn't bad for a beer at 11.9%. No real lacing either.

Aroma: It smells of bourbon. It isn't a strong bourbon aroma but it is strong enough to be obvious.

Taste: Up front there is a nice chocolate flavor. It tastes like Hershey's Special Dark. In the aftertaste there is a bourbon flavor but chocolate mostly takes the foreground of this beer.

Mouthfeel: From the start the beer is thick and very full bodied. It has a good amount of carbonation to entice the palate and keep things alive. It just feels right. There is a mild bitterness from what feels like the cocoa that is akin to what you'd get from eating dark chocolate.

Overall: It was a very enjoyable beer. The strongest elements of this beer are its chocolate flavor and its decadent mouthfeel. There was a bourbon aroma to the beer but it gives way to a nice chocolate flavor, then appears again right at the end. The beer title is "COCOA COCONUT NARWHAL" but there wasn't any discernible coconut. After letting the beer warm up quite a bit there still wasn't any sign of coconut. I wouldn't recommend getting this beer if you're looking for a Mounds type of flavor but it's great if you enjoy dark chocolate. These Trip in the Woods versions of Narwhal are limited but I would buy it again.

Pure black pour, bubbly tan head, but there is some leakage around the edges. Aromas are rich chocolate (LOADS of chocolate), the barrel, and oak that fades to coconut.

The chocolate is really forward on the taste, and it is delicious. The coconut and oak flavors balance the chocolate, especially as the beer warms, and there is noticeable heat from the barrel at the back of the palate. The mouthfeel is perfect - rich and creamy, but with allowances for the earthy hops.

SN crushed this, IMHO. A pleasure to drink.

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 9/13/2017. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky tan head with amazing retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coconut, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, coffee, fudge, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of roasted nuts, molasses, smoke, raisin, cherry, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Some increasing booze in the aromas as it warms, but not too overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa, coconut, and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coconut, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, coffee, fudge, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of roasted nuts, molasses, smoke, raisin, cherry, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Light roast/char bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coconut, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, coffee, fudge, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, dark bread, light molasses/dark fruits, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa, coconut, and bourbon barrel flavors; with an awesome roasted bitter/sweet and bourbon/oak spiciness balance; with zero cloying/acrid flavors after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness. Light-medium carbonation and very full body; with a very smooth, creamy, silky, velvety, and rich mouthfeel that is fantastic. Slightly sticky, chalky, and tannic. Alcohol is very well hidden; a mildly increasing warmth of 11.9%, with minimal barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an amazing BBA flavored imperial stout! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa, coconut, and bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV. Super rich, decadent, and complex; with perfect balance of the base stout and cocoa/coconut flavors; and perfect barrel integration across the board. Never overly boozy, tannic, or drying. A really amazing offering.

A 750ml with a date that appears to read 09/14/17. Pouring in a 14oz. porter/stout glass.

Look- Pours a thin dark brown leaving a few centimeters of tan foam behind. It quickly settles to a thin ring with a little lacing present.

Smell- Cocoa powder, coconut, char and bourbon.

Taste- Dark chocolate, coconut, dark fruit, mild tobacco, char and bourbon.

Feel- Thin but slightly oily with a dry finish.

Overall- A very nice variant of Narwhal that comes together well. I wish the feel was thicker, but the smell and more importantly the taste makes for a memorable beer. I'd definitely drink this again.

2018 Vintage

Appearance: Dark brown bordering on Black The beer has has a medium-sized dark brown head which faded to a ring.

Smell: Moderate Bourbon notes followed by brown sugar notes and some mild coffee notes.

Taste: The Bourbon and brown sugar notes from the nose come through in the taste profile. I also get some fairly noticeable oak notes, and roasted malts. The finish is fairly dry. It may be the power of suggestion but i pick up the faintest coconut and dark chocolate notes.

Mouth-feel: Medium to full bodied with a modest level of carbonation appropriate tor the style.

Overall: A good bal-aged Imperial Stout. As it warmed I was able to pick up the cacao addition but never really got a distinct coconut presence. Nice bal-aging notes though.
