Brewed with a double-barreled blast of Magnum hops and lupulin dust.

Hops are the name of the game with a Double IPA, but we knew we had to take it one step further. With Hop Bullet, we’re using a new technique, hitting the beer with a double-barreled blast of Magnum hops and lupulin dust—pure, concentrated hop flavor—directly into the tank to emphasize the intense pine and citrus flavors of classic West Coast hops.

Tasted just about as bad as the fresh hop session from SN. Truly a let down from a great brewery. Will stick to the regular SN pale ale.

Picked up a single 12 oz. bottle dated 2/27/18, because I have this perfectly rational fear of having too many hops in the house & them going bad….at least this one won’t.

The pour is a vibrant, clarified copper that’s pretty still. Smells odd – like hops that have been bio-engineered, a little stuffy & weird, if that makes sense. Attic hops. That.

Hop Bullet – with a name like that, you better bring your “A” game. This? It tastes just as strange as it smells. Musty & dusty, with citrus, honeydew, pine resin, & pine bark. Finishes sweet, with a weird, unpleasant muskiness that harkens to that skunk I met at the Renaissance Festival back in ’92. Gets worse as it warms. Struggling through this 12 ounces.

Not up to the standards of Sierra Nevada & a prime example of why I rarely blind-buy six or four packs anymore. Not a very good beer.

Poured from 12oz bottle marked with a 1/29/18 freshness date into a pint glass.

A- Crystal clear coppery yellow. Really light color for the style. Minimal head which quickly fades, leaving some sudsy lacing on the side of the glass.

S- mostly grassy hops with some lemon rind lurking at the edge. Malt is almost completely absent on the nose.

T- more bitterness than malt again here, with another hint of lemony zest.

F- really easy sipping, with some mild sticky resin feeling on the tongue

O- absolute middle-of-the-road beer here. I might be interested to try it on tap, but then again, there are a million big IPAs in the world today. This one doesn't need a second try.

The color is very light for a west coast IPA, more golden. The nose isn’t weak and sweet with small hints of hops. The taste is apricots, white pepper, peach and finishes with grapefruit. All of the flavors are a bit weak. Overall, underwealming.

Not my favorite from S.N. But drinkable and decent. Pours light golden. Aroma of sweet malt and slight grassy floral hops. Flavors of a much bigger floral resionous. Rose, slight earthy hops with sweet malt. For a DIPA it's okay. Magnum hops are not known for their aromatic and flavor qualities but this beer highlights them as best as it can.

Not like any DIPA I have ever had, a bit too light for the style.
Appearance is of a cheap lager, very light straw colored. Taste is much better than the smell. Feels thinner than the strength suggests. Definitely hides the 8%
Overall not a bad beer it just doesn't look/taste/feel like a true double/imperial IPA.
I love all SN beers but I will probably will not buy this again.

Appearance – This is a very light hazy orange in color with a good, white head but doesn’t look much like a DIPA.

Smell – This DIPA is being billed as a hop monster but all I’m getting is a big pine aroma. It smells good but lacks the complexity that I had expected.

Taste – The pine comes out comes through at the taste and I get a bit of orange rind but otherwise very bland. The malt is completely absent. I thought this was a DIPA?

Mouthfeel – A solid medium-bodied with good dryness throughout.

Drinkability – This is almost a session beer so well done to the brewers but need to classify this as an IPA because it’s not a DIPA by a long shot.

Finish is horrible, bordering on undrinkable, and I am an avowed hophead. Way too bitter, not balanced at all. Disappointing.

Hop Bullet pours a clear golden orange with a small ½ finger foamy looking head that lingers depositing some sticky lacing. Smell is up front floral with a bit of banana ester, based on the hops used, very little citrus or pine aroma. Taste has a malty base that is slightly sweet with just a hint of citrus and a very mild hop resin that seems to linger leaving a heavy bitterness on the palette. Nothing special about a mass produces craft beer, living in CA there are much better DIPA offerings available.

Initial impression from a bottle at a beer tasting:

2018.01.01 2nd impression from another bottle:

"Double IPA" per the label. Spring seasonal. Brewed with Magnum hops and lupulin dust. 8.0% ABV.

Served cold into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

APPEARANCE: Pours a frothy white head atop a clear yellow-copper body. Clean in appearance; obviously filtered. Retention is quite good for the ABV - ~8 minutes. Appears well-carbonated.

A classic imperial IPA appearance with no obvious faults.

AROMA: Very fresh and fragrant. Floral hop aromatics, hop oils, hop resin, "green"/ripe fruit, herbaceous hop aromatics, evergreen. No pine, citrus, or grapefruit.

Pale malts/2-row is all I get in terms of malt aromatics...luckily, there doesn't seem to be a crystal or caramalt malt presence.

Aromatic intensity is above average. Promises a balanced but hop-emphatic ale.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Quite hop-forward with concomitant bitterness; I'm not convinced Magnum was a great choice of hop as it brings a bit too much bitterness into play for the 2-row malt backbone to withstand. Floral, somewhat herbaceous, and draggingly resinous but not citrusy, fruity, piney, or oily.

Rough on the palate, dragging in its coarseness. Slightly scratchy. Full-bodied. Unrefreshing. Overcarbonated.

I remembered this being more balanced, but my impression from this bottle isn't terrific. I like that it goes for hop pungency, but you've got to have a malt foundation capable of erasing any overt hop bitterness with concomitant sweetness and this doesn't.

OVERALL: I'd like to revisit this one if only because I really enjoyed it the first time around. My second bottle from the same sixer was consumed just over a week after the first one and I'm finding the beer pretty imbalanced though not undrinkable. I'll enjoy finishing it, but it's not on par with, say, Lagunitas Sucks.

Look - cloudy yellow, slight white head that dissipates to ring, some lacing.

Smell - surprisingly bready in the nose, and surprisingly tame

Taste - a lot of ethanol. slight hoppiness, despite that this is supposed to be a double.

Feel - light to medium body

Overall - eh, I am actually not too impressed

seems like closer to 30IBU to me. A little too sweet for my taste. I expected a double IPA to be much more hoppy. Overall its takes good But I wouldn't consider it an IPA. More like a summer ale.
