Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
We're constantly brewing new IPAs looking for bold hop flavor. With this beer, our brewers thought it was so good that we decided to serve it straight from the tanks - unfiltered, unprocessed, and raw - to let all the fruit-forward hop flavors shine. The result is a hazy beer with modest bitterness and intense hop character. To some, making an unfiltered hop bomb may seem crazy, but to us, its a hazy little thing called IPA.

I can't say I'm in love with this one. It has a weird vegetal green pepper aftertaste. Very unique flavor overall. Too much alcohol in the smell and too much unripe fruit and herbaceousness in the taste. nb

12oz can, poured into 12oz tulip. Poured a murky orange-yellow color, with about a half-inch of white head that dissipated instantly, and left no lacing.

The nose was fairly bland, no real hop scent, and just a hint of malt. On the tongue, a wee bit of citrus hops showed through, but was otherwise equally as benign.

The body was on the light side of medium, smooth, dry, and left no aftertaste. Drinkability was easy, even for a boring brew. This beer featured one of the major flaws of the Murkbomb style, a complete lack of charcter. when you have the glass in hand, you're not sure if you're picking it up or putting it down. Overall, a rare unimpressive brew from SN. A complete lack of character and personality.

I dunno, maybe it's being conditioned by SN's Torpedo and Celebration Ale, but as such there wasn't much to this one. Pleasant, drinkable, reasonable value, but wouldn't buy it again, just not enough going on. First reaction was "Is this a light beer?", so I was surprised checking its ABV. Maybe it wasn't a hot enough day, and I wasn't at cookout, and I was expecting something of a flavor treat, and it's not a bad beer, just not much flavor/satisfaction there. I'm going to wait 'til it's 90+ and humid and try it again, might be the trick.

Almost two fingers worth of head. Can see shadows of fingers on other side of glass. Smells really dank for a hazy IPA. Really dank. Funky & musty, not juicy. Taste is not juicy either and hop presence is muted. This is really malty to me. Overall, I was excited this was going to be a year round hazy IPA. But it lacks what it takes to get me to want it year round. I would be willing to try again at another time and wouldn't complain if I got one handed to me. But won't seek out any more for now.

L-Hazed oak colored

S-Overripe mangoes, oranges, and sweet lemons....hints of yeasty black pepper..

T-Doughy malt...black pepper yeasty notes...lemons, tropical and citrus fruits. A little pine as well. It all sounds a lot better in print than it tastes though. It's fine but just doesn't mesh well. A bit too much yeasty notes and not enough juicy fruit notes...

F-Medium bodied but not as soft as a NE typically is.

O-Decent enough IPA...more average than great in that regard but misses the mark for NE style.

I'm feeling overdramatic but I just expected a lot more out of this beer. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but it just didn't live up to the hype of all this hazy IPA stuff. Almost seems watered down a bit.

look - well carbonated with a 2 finger head that dies down to a 1 in about 2-3 minutes. body color is of more yellow orange juice.

taste - floral/pine/fruity mostly mango

nose - light nose - floral & fruity

feel - soft/fuzzy with a bit of a water at the end. I liked it

Definitely unfiltered and raw. A nice floral citrus smell. A little too carbonated. Not very smooth. Floral and citrus up front but it falls flat on the back end. Disappointing for Sierra Nevada.

Was excited to see Sierra Nevada make a hazy IPA. Looking up the beer online, it looked like it was made with Citra and Comet. Obviously a fan of Citra and I was somewhat familiar with Comet, but I mess that one up a lot (thinking it’s in a beer, but it’s not, etc.). Anyway, I’ll never stop being a Sierra Nevada fan. This would be my 87th review from their brewery, the most of any for me (Stone was second at this time at 84). Let’s keep it moving to 100.

Poured a gold hazy color with 3-to-4 fingers of rocky off-white head. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Excellent foamy lacing. Almost perfect retention. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled Citra, dish soap, stone fruit, caramel malts, tangerine, nectarine, melon, lemon zest, pine, lime and hints of peppery spices. A little more flavor from the can, but not that much difference. (Smell - 3.50)

Taste was not nearly as good as the nose. This seemed very unbalanced. Still getting that Chico yeast, stone fruit, caramel malts, herbal, earthy grass, Citra, pine, dish soap, citrus peel, peppery spices, grain and bread. Not a big fan here. (Taste - 3.00)

Medium body. Oily-to-thin texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt grainy finish. (Feel - 3.25)

Wow. Swing and a miss. I don’t know if it was the mass producing of this beer and maybe there should have been smaller batches, but this is not good for the style at all. (Overall - 3.00)

Purchased cold - Can dated 12/06/17 - Poured into an English pub glass

L - Pours a somewhat hazy dark straw color, with a bone white tightly foamed one finger head on a perfect pour. Dissipating quickly, the head recedes and leaves all but a thin veil on top with a scant ring around the glass. Beautiful stucco-esque lacing as it goes down. Visible sediment having fallen out of suspension is the only drawback here.

S - Little to no nose whatsoever, light citrus, a whiff of bready malt.

T - Redolent of citrus, slight melon, and a touch of rhubarb. Not over the top, but no real depth either.

F - Light to medium bodied, with big, sharp carbonation.

O - So I was super pumped to see this land on the shelves, and couldn't wait to get it into a glass. Nice to see Sierra Nevada throw their glove into the hazy IPA ring, but the lack of nose and sediment is displeasing. I know very well this is an unfiltered beer however hazy does not equal chunky, there are plenty of brewers who can make a hell of a hazy IPA without visible sediment present until perhaps the last sip if its a few weeks old.

12 fl oz CAN ran me $1.59 at a Trader Joe's in Austin, TX.

IPA. 6.7% ABV. Packaged 11/28/17. BITTERING HOPS Magnum. FINISHING HOPS Citra, Comet, Simcoe, El Dorado, Mosaic. MALTS Two-row Pale, Munich, Oats, Acidulated.

Pours a turbid yellow body of average vibrance topped by a thin weak head of white colour. Head retention is ~3 minutes. Not a terrific looking IPA by any stretch, but within conventions.

Aroma yields faint citrus, tropical fruit juice, pale malts, juicy orange, mandarin orange, tangerine, and pink grapefruit. Bitterness is restrained, as is aromatic pungency. Suggests a timid but mellow IPA.

Taste follows the aroma, hitting on various citrus fruits (orange, tangerine, mandarin orange grapefruit, maybe mango) but quelling any concomitant bitterness with pale malt sweetness and proteiny adjunct (oats). Not imbalanced but ultimately lacking in hop flavour and pungency, the showcase of which is kind of the point of the IPA style.

Texture is somewhat soft. Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, well-carbonated. Not oily. Not as juicy as breweries tend to try to have consumers believe their hazy IPAs are.

A bit more conventional via its Magnum bittering than most contemporary IPAs that are deliberately turbid and which downplay bitterness. It has some in common with the India Odwalla ales plaguing the U.S. East Coast but its adherence to classic Magnum bittering helps keep its hop bitterness a bit less suppressed to its benefit. Still, it fails to showcase its hops well (what a waste of Mosaic!) as any bitterness gets buried beneath the cloud of oat adjunct and pale malt sweetness. I'm glad I tried it, but it won't dazzle discerning drinkers. At best, I see it appeasing those obsessed with the so-called "hazy IPA" substyle, which seems to be what it's being marketing for anyway.

I won't be consciously buying it again, but it's definitely drinkable. If you're one of those trend-chasers waiting in line at U.S. East Coast breweries to buy India Odwalla Ales marketed as "hazy IPAs" that you've never even tried at that infernal $20+ per 4 500ml can price point (I'm looking at you, Other Half), I'd definitely advise picking up a sixer of this instead since it'll be better 9 times out of 10 and it's a hell of a lot easier on the wallet.
