Style: New England IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
We're constantly brewing new IPAs looking for bold hop flavor. With this beer, our brewers thought it was so good that we decided to serve it straight from the tanks - unfiltered, unprocessed, and raw - to let all the fruit-forward hop flavors shine. The result is a hazy beer with modest bitterness and intense hop character. To some, making an unfiltered hop bomb may seem crazy, but to us, its a hazy little thing called IPA.

Pint on tap.

A: Pours a fairly turbid golden/orange with a finger of dense head. Looks more like a lightly cloudy wheat beer than full blown yeast starter.
S: Sweet and hoppy nose full of tropical nectar and hints of citrus. Not as powerful as I was expecting, but also this bar gave it to me in a pint glass.
T: Juicy tropical hop flavor that's on the sweeter side but there's still a nice leafy/citrus bitterness in the finish. Sweet hop flavors melds into the bitterness very smoothly without any sharp transition or edge to it.
M: Medium body with a fairly soft mouthfeel that is more crisp and drying than most hazy ipas I’ve had. This still feels like a finished, fully-attenuated, beer without a ton of residual sugar that so many other hazies seem to strive for. Not overly soft or fluffy either. Still a nice crispness. On the heavier thicker side but still dry. Carbonation is splashy with big bubbles and fairly soft.
O: More “regular” ipa qualities than hazy, or should I say this has more balance than most. Regardless of style, definitely a solid beer, a good entry point into the style. More bitterness than I was expecting, which is definitely welcomed.

L: Poured from a can to a pint glass. Had a golden yellow color and a hazy (of course) consistency. There was an inch of foamy, very long-lasting head. Fantastic lacing.

S: A sweet aroma of hops, citrus and tropical fruit, malt, and pine.

T: Tasted of a bit of malt up front (this seems to dissipate), a hint of pine (not overly prevalent), some citrus fruit (orange), a fair amount of hops (less than expected), and a bit of tropical fruit (pineapple, in particular). This isn't an overly hoppy beer, but it still manages to work. It's a fruit-centric beer, making it sweeter than most. Pretty tasty.

F: A fair amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Light-bodied.

O: Calling this a NE IPA seems like kind of a misnomer; it's more in line with a regular American IPA. Nonetheless, it's a drinkable beer.

Pours out a very cloudy pale gold color. The head is frothy with damn good retention. It leaves plenty of lacing as well.

The nose is full of tropical fruits and lemongrass. Orange, grapefruit, pineapple are all in there. Extremely aromatic. I can smell it 4 feet from the glass.

Very fruity taste. There's a good amount of grapefruit with unsweetened orange juice. Has a nice floral/earth quality to it as well.

The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and feels wet. Carbonation is nice. Its light and crisp.

This is a little one-dimensional in the flavor for me. Hazy as advertised, smell is of oranges and so is the taste. Lacks juiciness I like in New England IPAs.

Appearance:
Amber-gold, hazy. Medium-fast rising bubbles. Small frothy head. Moderate head retention.

Aroma:
Bright, citrusy, pineapple, some sweet onion, sweet bready malts, hint of caramel.

Taste/Finish/Body:
Hop bitterness is moderate, mostly citrus and pineapple, some tropical, hint of sweet onion. Solid malt backbone, sweet bread, slight caramel. Slight bitter, yet very crisp finish, lingers very well. Medium bodied, juicy, a little sticky, high carbonation, very smooth.

Overall:
It's a very nice IPA.

Had this on 2018-09-24 in Columbia, PA from a 12oz canned on 2018-07-05

A - Hazy straw-orange with a 2-finger pillowy white head that sticks around leaving good lace.

S - Fresh pineapple and mango, mild dank and pine, cracker. Pleasant and inviting.

T - Pretty well echoes the aroma with the addition of orange flesh and peach skin, grassy and light white pepper spice and a welcoming-but-moderate-pine bitterness in the finish (no more than their pale ale).

M - Medium body and carbonation. Smooth but not too soft. I like the feel.

O - So to me, this is a very balanced beer. I'm glad there's still some West Coast goodness represented in this style. It's just darn tasty and easy to quaff.

Not bad..while certainly "hazy", it isn't as citrusy as the best examples of the NE style IMHO. All-in-all, it is a solid offering from SN.

Damn good. Maybe a little fizzy. But I'm getting tropical fruit in the nose, just-right malty sweetness with a grapefruit counterpunch, lingering resiny pine. Something to look forward to when you know it's in the fridge. Great job, Sierra Nevada!
