Hazy Little Thing IPAHazy Little Thing IPA

Brewed by:
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: New England IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
We're constantly brewing new IPAs looking for bold hop flavor. With this beer, our brewers thought it was so good that we decided to serve it straight from the tanks - unfiltered, unprocessed, and raw - to let all the fruit-forward hop flavors shine. The result is a hazy beer with modest bitterness and intense hop character. To some, making an unfiltered hop bomb may seem crazy, but to us, its a hazy little thing called IPA.

Pours an effervescent & hazed straw color with 3 fingers if pearl colored head. Almost clears, very good head retention & sheets of lacing

S: Citrus & mango

T: Orange juice, a touch of grassyness, & grapefruit up front. Orange, tangerine, a touch of grassyness & just a litttle maltyness as this warms. Finishes juicy, citrusy & more-ish

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, good balance

Very easy to drink, ABV is well disquised a little more depth of flavor would've pushed it into the stratoshpere. Well worth a try

Rating this on the basis of an NE style IPA that I assume this is supposed to be.

Canned December 5th 2017 at 1:01 PM Chico California from the date on the can.

Hazy orange colored ale with a massive white head, good thing I poured this in to an oversized glass.

Intense tangerine smell. Bitter pithy citrus rind scent, smells like a mix of every citrus fruit you can find. Slight fruit sourness and pineapple and passion fruit scent. Some woody scent but mostly this is a citrus baseball bat to the nose.

Starts out bitter, savory and fruity with a bare kiss of sweetness. Stays pretty dry but there is a mild amount of sweetness. Tastes woody and citrus with a lingering savory taste. Flavor is on the mild side.

Mouthfeel is good.

Not sure how this will age, I got it the day it hit the shelf, 17 days after it was canned.

Overall a serviceable citrus forward IPA that isn't an IBU bomb.

12 ounce can poured into a tulip

A: Pours a bright orange color with a white head, no retention, lots of lacing, beer is hazy and cloudy with lots of tiny bubbles streaming up the glass's side.

A: Citra hops are shining with notes of guava, grapefruit peel, and pineapple, tangerines, citrus peel, nice balance of aromas, not getting any malt or alcohol, nice aroma.

T: Follows the nose with guava, grapefruit peel, pineapple, tangerines, citrus, slight note of grass or hay, touch of malts in the finish, finish has notes of grapefruit, tangerines, and pineapple, bitterness is moderate.

M: Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation and a dry citrus peel-like finish.

O: A solid unfiltered style IPA from Sierra Nevada, not as tropical as other unfiltered IPAs I've tasted and has more carbonation, definitely going to enjoy the remaining beers from the six-pack.

Canned date of 12/05/17

Appearance - Pours hazy and dull yellow-orange with a white colored head that peaks at just over a finger's width. Sub-par retention results in a mostly barren surface with a thin ring of suds encircling the outside edge. A few patches and some broken lines make up the lacing.

Smell - Citrus, spice, lesser stonefruit, pine and a hint of grain.

Taste - Follows the nose. Citrus and light stonefruit fruitiness. Hint of pineapple. Touch of pine near the finish. Grainy, earthy malt undertone with a bit of hay character. Aftertaste lingers with slight pith, spice, juicy character and, unfortunately, grain.

Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium in body with moderate, bitey carbonation.

Overall - I'm not sure if Sierra Nevada knows what the cool kids are brewing these days or if they just decided to do their own take on the hazy IPA style, but this is far removed from what was expected. While the hop profile could probably benefit from some tweaking, the malt bill is simply a disaster for this type of brew. Grainy and earthy don't really go with juicy and sweet. While it's one of the better priced hazy IPA's on the market, I have little desire to buy it again.

Fun, interesting beer. The citra and comet hops are all over the place: melon, strawberry, resiny grass, rhubarb. There's a light bitterness up front, with a smooth balanced finish that reminds me of a medium-bodied wine with a berry, grapefruit finish. Kudos to Sierra Nevada for going big on the hazy IPA.

Great fruit forward hazy brew. It has blasts of intense fruit flavors like pineapple, lemons and mango. All that but easy drinking and very refreshing. Good enough I grabbed a crowler to go from SN.

Look: Very hazy but not turbid. Light orangish yellow appearence. Nice long lasting white head.
Aroma: Citrus and tropical aroma. Aroma overall is very light.
Taste: Some sweet tropical fruit flavor at the start, then a nice orange bitter and dry finish. Bitterness is light for style, but it does the job. It hits you quickly and does not linger or long. Very light malt flavor towards the beginning of each sip and no alcohol flavor at all.
Feel: Great carbonation and mouthfeel for style.
Overall: The beer has an extremely light malt flavor and a powerful hop flavor that is not overwhelming. Love the hoppiness level of this beer.
