Style: New England IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
We're constantly brewing new IPAs looking for bold hop flavor. With this beer, our brewers thought it was so good that we decided to serve it straight from the tanks - unfiltered, unprocessed, and raw - to let all the fruit-forward hop flavors shine. The result is a hazy beer with modest bitterness and intense hop character. To some, making an unfiltered hop bomb may seem crazy, but to us, its a hazy little thing called IPA.

Canned between 3-4 weeks ago, 12oz. Let's see how a west coast craft giant does with their take on the NEIPA style. This has the orange juice-esque appearance that's typical of the style. Hazy with sediment in suspension. Very nice head retention and lacing. The aroma has an overall floral and grassy character that's quite nice, but it's lacking in the citrus and tropical fruit notes that great IPAs in general are bringing to the table these days. There's a nice tangerine note that's all too muted.

The flavor, as with pretty much every SN APA or IPA I've tried, has similarities to the rest of their lineup, perhaps due to the yeast used or particular malts. The hoppiness comes across as pithy without any piney or dank character. It's dry and bitter, though not super-bitter. The lack of sugars certainly imparts some level of apparent bitterness. Well-carbonated, not overly so, but a bit prickly. This is a nice addition to Sierra Nevada's lineup of hop-focused beers, though there are plenty of other NE/hazy/juicy/whatever IPAs that surpass it.

12oz. can served in my Spiegelau IPA glass. PKGD 120717 printed the base of the can. Pours a lovely, dull orange with a fluffy, half inch, bright white head. Clarity is quite turbid. Pleasant nose - pith and bright candied citrus. Taste consistent with nose; however, candied citrus is diminished and pith is more present. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body (closer to light) with an even carbonation. All and all, taste is not as big as the boutique NIEPAs out there but a solid offering and hits the mark at $9.99 a sixer.

Moderately hazy light amber with big rocky white head, plenty of sticky lacing hanging around. Smell: peachy, floral with a little dried mango and pine. Taste: ripe mango, green mango, a little grapefruit, lime candy. Mild bitterness. Light bodied, no real heft, dryish and somewhat powdery finish. It's alright.

Purchased cold - Can dated 12/06/17 - Poured into an English pub glass

L - Pours a somewhat hazy dark straw color, with a bone white tightly foamed one finger head on a perfect pour. Dissipating quickly, the head recedes and leaves all but a thin veil on top with a scant ring around the glass. Beautiful stucco-esque lacing as it goes down. Visible sediment having fallen out of suspension is the only drawback here.

S - Little to no nose whatsoever, light citrus, a whiff of bready malt.

T - Redolent of citrus, slight melon, and a touch of rhubarb. Not over the top, but no real depth either.

F - Light to medium bodied, with big, sharp carbonation.

O - So I was super pumped to see this land on the shelves, and couldn't wait to get it into a glass. Nice to see Sierra Nevada throw their glove into the hazy IPA ring, but the lack of nose and sediment is displeasing. I know very well this is an unfiltered beer however hazy does not equal chunky, there are plenty of brewers who can make a hell of a hazy IPA without visible sediment present until perhaps the last sip if its a few weeks old.

12oz can. Poured out a cloudy/hazy orange color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled of grapefruit, pineapple and toasted caramel. Nice tropical fruit flavor with some caramel sweetness.

Canned 11/28/17; drank 1/1/18 @ the Yarchives.

Cloudy orange appearance.

A violent pour yielded a huge bright white head; a thick curtain of frothy lace.

Cane sugar, mango & pine notes in the nose.

Soft, medium mouthfeel.

Mango & cane sugar flavors up front; mild pine dryness on the finish.

While Sierra Nevada certainly isn't Tree House, I was mildly impressed with their take on the hazy style. A bit pine-y but certainly enjoyable.

Wow, this is a great "session like" IPA and does not hit like a 6.70% beer. We brought it fresh this week at the brewery, 12/14/17 born on date. Great head, color, and taste, I hope it shows up in Florida!
