2019 model about 4 months since bottling. poured in to Spiegelau IPA glass.
Look: pours pale to medium amber in color (not unlike many other SN IPAs), with a half inch white frothy head with above average retention. a little opaque at first, but clears with time. not much lacing was observed.
Smell: resiny, grassy hops aromas explode with notes of tropical tangerine and pineapple combined with subtle caramel
Taste: this is hop bomb indeed. intensely hop flavor dominated, tropical fruits combined with medium malt sweetness, and bold in-your-face bitterness that screams a lot more than the rated 65 IBUs...
Feel: medium body, rich, resiny texture (as expected, I think), moderate to crisp carbonation and pronounced astringency.
Overall: I love Sierra Nevada. they do great IPAs and have been doing so for decades. no exception here. this is just a stronger, more intense version of their lower abv counterparts. a winner for sure. already looking forward to next years!

Clear golden rose with three fingers of cream color head. Rings and swathes of lace appear as the head slowly drops.
Smell is hop oil resinous with citrus fruit hops.
Taste is green slightly dank resinous hops with some caramel malts.
Mouthfeel is medium to high with good carbonation. The finish is medium dry and bitter.
Overall a superb beer for the price. Packaged on date: 6-05-19.

This is a lovely beer. The bouquet of citrus scents that greet the nose are followed by a drier, pine-resin taste with underlying malt sweetness. It's a big alcohol beer, but very refined in taste.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. "Hoptimum 2019 Edition Triple IPA"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "PKGD 03/29/19 1202"
$ @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Look: Clear dark amber body. Two-finger thick head of rocky off-white foam. It displays excellent head retention and very good lacing.

Smell: Bright and fresh with citrus (tangerine/orange, grapefruit), apple, pineapple, and pine.

Taste: It's surprisingly rich and malty given the aroma. It's bready and caramelish but backed by a solid bitterness that keeps it dry. The fruity and piney notes found in the nose remain, but it's also somewhat floral and herbal, and a touch spicy, possibly from the alcohol.

Feel: Medium bodied and dextrinous. Crisp and then smooth.

Overall: It's a big beer which is nice, I get that, it's the equivalent of a barleywine in alcohol, but it doesn't have the maltiness, at least in the same way that most do, nor does it have the hoppiness that a lot of smaller IPAs have. It's very 'Sierra Nevada' in that it's really nicely balanced and rounded but in this case (Tripel IPA) I think it could have had a little more edge to it.

Picked up at Sherbrooke Liquor in Edmonton - surprised as not seen previous years here....
Pours a very nice clear pale orange copper colour with 1-2 fingers white head that dissipates quickly.
Aroma sweet malty candied tangerine/over ripe orange with a hint of booziness on an underlying piney background.
Taste starts with some sweet smooth caramel malt followed by citrus notes and building bitterness which pleasantly overtakes the palate - tangerine, orange, and pine in back.
Medium full mouthfeel with lingering bitterness balancing the sweet boozy nature.

The first thing you notice is....Wow this smells like a big beer. The smell of hops and pine hit you hard. Delving into my first sip I am cautious because I know it packs a wallop. To my surprise it was tame for being a triple IPA and being nearly 10% alcohol. You can actually find some tropical and citrus notes coming throug the bomb of hops. It is very well done but it's still a big beer, so look at for the "alcohol creep".

Interesting. I picked up a bottle of 2019 Hoptimum recently, but I had no idea that the recipe had (apparently) been tweaked in the last year. So much the better.

From the Bottle: "Distinguished, Yet Devilishly Hoppy"; "Every year, we try to top ourselves by making the hoppiest, most intense and most flavorful IPA we can muster. This year, we chose the most flavorful hops and pushed them beyond their limits in this all-new triple IPA. This reimagined Hoptimum is our hoppiest beer yet, providing a blend of tropical and citrus hop aroma that delivers a refined yet aggressive character."; "We brew in Chico, CA, and Mills River, NC, to bring you the finest quality beer."

I was kind of anxious to Pop! the cap on this one since everything else up to this point lacked the kind of hoppiness that makes me happy & I was starting to develop a serious jones. I began a gentle C-Line pour, but once it displayed NE-plus quality clarity, I just continued until the bottle had been completely decanted. It quickly formed just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with decent retention. I was heartened by the sticky lacing that it left in its wake as it fell. Nose put me into a hophead swoon. It was prevalent with pine, but underlain with a load of tropical fruits. This is what I should have wished for when the Tropical AIPAs first began to appear. I don't mind their flavor profile, per se, but I would really like more pine & grapefruit. This delivered, at least on the nose. Mouthfeel was fairly creamy, like a dollop had ben scooped onto my tongue. Phew! I will cop to having been lulled into an inappropriate stupidity by the lest two. I was not prepared for the intensity that this one brought! It caught me unawares as it quickly unpacked its hops flavors, including a heavy dose of pine & grapefruit, underlain with tropical fruit salad. It all went up into my sinuses, causing me to cough, gag & my eyes to water! Dang, but I have missed this sort of thing. Finish was dry, hoppy & totally satiating. Man, I really need to do this EVERY year! Not your bag? More for me!

A: Deep gold/amber with rich foamy head and very abundant lacing.
N: Loads of hops, citrus, malt, and pine.
T: Follows the nose, massive hop hit, loads of citrus, sweet malt, and a mild bite/bitterness.
M: Medium feel with a minor bite.
O: A fantastic Triple IPA, flavors are balanced and for 9.6% it drank smooth and clean.

Appearance – This TIPA poured a deep orange in color with a modest head that went down quickly.

Smell – The complex hop profile needs to open up here at the nose. The deep, rindy simcoe is clear along with some strong grapefruit.

Taste – This is a big, grapefruit taste with little malt balance for the style.

Mouthfeel – This is medium-bodied with some unexpectedly strong drying throughout.

Drinkability – This is a real sipper, something you will want to drink slowly to appreciate.

This beer has been amply described by others, so suffice to say it is a BIG beer. Boozy, malty, and majorly hoppy, everything you’d look for in a triple IPA. Ultimately for me it’s just too sweet and malty and “caramely” for my particular taste.

It’s a Christmas Eve, cold weather IPA and in my southern CA world and with my tastebuds it just doesn’t work that well for me, but for the style it’s outstanding.

The Hoptimum is back again in 2018! I've been wanting to taste it for so long, glad that I could find it in the stores. Is this legendary or is it only me who thinks like that? It is definitely beautiful to look at, very clean and crisp, almost no haziness to it. Really nice dank, piney, resinous hops raise their heads in the aroma as I'm sniffing and snipping while waiting for the right temperature. As I read, this has been made with multiple hopping methods, including dry hopping and Torpedoing and the result is something like "hop honey" or rather liquid resin in there. It is very thick and almost sweet - I would like to imagine that this is all because of the hops and not the malt base, but whichever it is, the end balance achieved is a beer that makes you feel that you're drinking hop manna from the heavens. Liquid gold!
As it warms, different and different hops come to the forefront of the aroma and the taste changes into something really triple intensive. I am really satisfied with this masterpiece from Sierra. Would love to try the original Hoptimum, if ever possible. Could live up to my legendary expectations easily...

I was surprised to see this on sale at Downtown Crown given its reputation and Downtown Crown's usual high quality but equally high prices. Pours clear and transparent amber with a medium head and balanced nose.

Big and boozy up front but not as overwhelming as I expected. Oily and relatively complex, with pepper, grapefruit rind, and caramel extant. Texture does yeoman's work keeping it all in the park but still a little boozy for my taste, even for the style.

Deep golden color with white cap and lacing.

Aroma of pine, citrus zest and ripe tropical fruit.

Taste is hop forward with a zingy fresh, edgy hop sharpness that while being aggressive is quite flavorful as well. I don't get as much tropical fruit in the taste as I do in the scent but it's there in an underlying capacity. Relatively simple flavors but the whole comes across as complex and finishes dry. A beer that makes you sit back and think then quickly take another swallow.

Full texture with balancing carbonation.

Brewer's web site says this is their hoppiest beer yet and I won't argue. It's not just bitterness, this one is complex and balanced and presents it's aggressive hop forwardness with almost an air of sophistication.

Copper and syrupy looking, with a very slow rising moderate amount of carbonation. Top with two fingers of off-white head.

Smells of Carmel, pineapple, citrus, and paint.

Taste is like my taste buds just went into shock. Extremely vibrant almost metallic in the shiny kind of away hops. Pine, citrus, pine resin, caramel, and toffee.

Medium, syrupy Bonnie, with moderate to high carbonation.

I got this in Chico California At the Sierra Sierra Nevada brewery, and I’m drinking it in Reading August 27, 2018.

12 ounce bottle - $3.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a clear, bronze-hued body with a diminising, thinning, white head.

Smell: A scent of dissolved sugar, piquant alcohol wafts perserving snippets of various citrus peels, some resinous pine and scented soap with a distant vegetal tone like steamed peapods.

Taste: Flash of straight-up castor sugar and toasted grains, then it's off to ascerbic citrus and altogether firm resins. An orange and tangerine pairing, a tropical flourish and some apricot-flavored hooch, as this harbours some warming, peppery alcohol. Turns a bit soapy, piney and rides hard and tangy through the long finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-light carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel, comes across at times oily, at others creamy.

Overall: I find that, as I am beginning to become unfortunately accustomed to the many IPA's in today's world ever reducing and minimizing its once treasured attributes, that a punchier offering like Hoptimum, even at 60-whatever IBUs this year, really gives it to you hard on the kitchen table.

A 12 fl. oz. bottle, packaged on 18th May 2018. Poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Appearance: A very nice clear copper amber colour with a just over two finger off white head with great retention that left behind some nice lacing.

Aroma: Pine, grapefruit rind, orange, lime zest and light caramel malt.

Taste: Sweet caramel malt, bitter grapefruit, citrus rind, candied orange and a light booziness.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Looks great with good aromas. Taste was also nice but it would’ve been even better if the light booziness could be hidden behind the pine or fruit. Having said that, it is a Triple IPA, so you do kind of expect it to be strong.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 4/2/2018. Pours slightly hazy deep golden amber color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, citrus peel/zest, green pepper, pine, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, citrus peel/zest, green pepper, pine, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, citrus peel/rind, green pepper, pine, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and no astringent hop flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, fairly crisp, and lightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 9.6%. Overall this is a fantastic DIPA! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth, easy, and fairly crisp/refreshing to drink for the ABV; with the modestly bitter/drying finish, not aggressive. A lot of hop varieties, but everything came together perfectly. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hop complexity; nice wheat/oat/malt backbone, with minimal residual sweetness. This is very well attenuated for the ABV, and a lot less malty than the original. A highly enjoyable offering as expected.

The 2018 Edition of Hoptimum is a clear, amber-golden beer with a three finger high, beige-white head that leaves lacing o the glass.

I remember the earlier years of this beer to leave a boozy, alcohol-taste in my mind but this one is more subtile.
The nose is caramel malt, resin, pine, floral notes and orange marmalade. Of course a lot of hops here :)
Taste of orange, mandarin, caramel malt, grape, citrus, pine and resin.
Mouth: Full body. Medium carbonation. Very balanced and not to boozy body! Malty backbone. Bitter ending Almost oily and smooth.

Absolutely fantastic! Definitely an improvement over erlier editions (or have I change my preferences...?)

A thick, amber pour. Light, quickly fading head. Nose is lightly piney, but otherwise not very prevalent. A bit of boozy alcohol notes. Sipped carefully, the ale is intensely flavored on multiple levels. Dense mouthfeel, super smooth, long long aftertaste. A very well done edition.

12oz bottled 5/30/18 (42 days ago) poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 9.6% ABV. The beer pours bright copper amber in color with sticky light khaki head. The aroma is tropical fruit, citrus and a little caramel. The taste begins slightly sweet with tropical fruit then transforms to pine and earthy hops and a dank bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, adequately carbonated and undry in the finish. Overall, very good. According to our tour guide at the brewery, they used every technique available there to put hops in this beer. Every taste is a little different and new.

12 oz bottle bottled 5/30/2018 (37 days old)

Pours a golden body with a white head. Decent retention and lacing

Mosaic hops jump out at first whiff, getting a couple other hop varieties as well but not as prominent. Some malt detected. Floral and tropical

Taste differs from the smell. Less floral and tropical.More of a Citra hop going on I'm getting bitter red grapefruit. The alcohol is prominent . Nice bitterness ! Very boozy dry finish.

Medium feel. The malt is more prominent . Smooths out the feel nicely.

Value (does not effect score) A couple bucks more then a normal decent 6 pack... But a good value for a seasonal release beer

Overall a nice boozy double IPA.

Perfect medium amber with a big mean head.
Smell is viciously citrusy and bitter perfectly complementing the nearly hidden alcohol content.
Taste runs parallel to the taste, deep and intense hop flavors mix on the tongue. A refreshing taste of pine and alcohol on the finish.

Less citrusy than last year, this actually lives up to the name "triple IPA"
It is utterly awesome

Bought fresh, drank fresh, delicious fresh!
Pours a warmly caramel color with a head of foam that lasts for days. Does it ever go down? Eventually, yes, but I didn’t have the patience and helped it out.
Pleasing hoppy aroma, lighly floral and fruity with some sweet orange-mandarina notes. It’s big and bitter, but approachable, with a squeeze of tart citrusy sweetness on the back end. Just shy of 10%, but smooth. Yum.
