Trip In the Woods: Tequila-Barrel-Aged Otra VezTrip In the Woods: Tequila-Barrel-Aged Otra Vez
Notes: For this limited offering we pushed beyond the typical barrel-aged beer theory. We got our hands on some Reposado Tequila oak barrels and then aged our new Otra Vez Gose with Lime and Agave. This Trip in the Woods starts out tart yet juicy, with hints of lime. For the finish? The unmistakable silkines of a classic Reposado.

The beer poured brownish amber in color with a small head, less than one finger thick. The carbonation was quite light. The aroma of agave was strong with a honey like sweet smell. The lime was not very evident in the smell. The taste reminded me of honey once more, as the sweetness of agave came through. The lime was very light in the taste, but I could taste the caramel like effect of tequila barrels. This had the same ingredients except the salt as Founders Mas Agave, but this was not as evocative of margarita, nor as good as that beer. The feel was medium thick. I liked it fine, but was wishing for a Mas Agave instead.

Bottle:
A light clear liquid exits the bottle, and as the glass fills, a nice white grows atop the body. There is a somewhat burnished gold body with a little fuzziness at the edges, barely hazy. Thin cap holds throughout (etched glass) and differing levels of lacing from mostly lines, but at one point I had a nice little curtain going.

Nose gives me the impression of a mixed drink, and one I want to sip right away. The tartness of the Gose comes through as fresh lime juice that is well integrated into the barrel components, mainly the reposado tequila but also a bit of the barrel wood as well.

Taste starts with tartness - lime juice predominantly, but with a squeeze of lemon sour. The soft yet plentiful carbonation is nice. The tequila comes next (more strongly in a cold glass, oddly enough) and gives a sort of citrus tequila spritzer mixed drink. The impression doesn't hold as the Otra Vez base beer is recognizable in the end. It pushes forward with warmth, pushing the barrel notes to the side.

Early in the glass, I liked the strength of the tequila - it was evident and not overdone. It seemed to fade in prominence pretty quickly, though. In the end, this was a Gose lightly accented with barrel notes and a splash of tequila.

This was one of the worst beers I have had in years. I have found a great pleasure in barrel aged beers so I thought I would try this respected brand. Next time, I will ask someone who has tasted something like this,

Light gold and completely clear. Short head whose bubbles are fine and silky on the tongue. Smell is sweet agave with a slight burn of alcohol (or maybe my mind is just adding that in there because it smells similar to tequila? Taste is everything you could want out of a beer like this. It is light, incredibly flavorful, simple, and yet still somehow dynamic. A mild tart sourness to start that melts into sweet agave with hints of fading lime pucker. Ends in a barely malt making this really well rounded and incredibly good drinking. This beer drinks silky smooth and is very very easy drinking. Can always count on Sierra Nevada

The beer is a bright gold color with a small white head that persists.
Aroma of lime primarily, but also some lemon and a hint of orange. Faint tequila. A little bit of wood.
Lime up front, tart, with some lemon and orange. Salty. Nice smooth tequila finish.
This is a tart, crisp, refreshing beer, and one I would be happy to drink anytime.

L: Poured from a bottle to a cylinder glass. Had a gold / amber color and a hazy consistency. There was a quarter inch of foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: A very nice aroma of citrus fruit, tequila, oak, and wheat.

T: Tasted of a mild bit of salt (just a fleeting touch), some oak notes, lots of citrus fruit (lime, in particular), a fair bit of wheat (not overpowering), and a good shot of tequila. An interesting take on the gose style. The tequila adds something very interesting it, but given its light character, they seem made for each other. There's a definite sweetness that can't be ignored. Tasty.

F: A good amount of carbonation with a somewhat slick finish. Medium-bodied.

O: A well-rounded, enjoyable beer. Drinkable.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/7/2018. Pours crystal clear pale golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big lightly tart limes, lemon, citrus zest, orange, grapefruit, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white wine, sea salt, tequila, oak, hay, straw, grass, agave, honey, wheat, and white bread; with light notes of cinnamon, oaken vanilla, lacto funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, limes, agave, tequila barrels, and pale/wheat malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big lightly tart limes, lemon, citrus zest, orange, grapefruit, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white wine, sea salt, tequila, oak, hay, straw, grass, agave, honey, wheat, and white bread; with light notes of cinnamon, oaken vanilla, lacto funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness and light tequila/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart limes, lemon, citrus zest, orange, grapefruit, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white wine, sea salt, tequila, oak, hay, straw, grass, agave, honey, wheat, white bread, light cinnamon/vanilla/funk, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, limes, agave, tequila barrels, and pale/wheat malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tartness and tequila/oak spiciness balance; with no puckering flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from tartness and tequila/oak spiciness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, fairly acidic, and lightly tannic/saline balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol for 6.4%. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged Gose! All around outstanding outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, limes, agave, tequila barrels, and pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth, refreshing, and fairly crisp/clean to drink with the mellowly acidic/drying finish. Not overly lactic or salty. Basically tastes like imperial Otra Vez, with perfect Tequila barrel integration. A bit sweeter on malt/agave, and juicy on fruit/Lacto notes; but still ending nicely crisp and drying from acidity. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected.

Clear gold with a quickly fading head. Nose is filled with tequila, lime oak vanilla and maybe a tiny bit of cinnamon. Taste is tart with a great balance of lime and tequila. Nice sweetness and floral finish with accents of oak vanilla and cinnamon.

Had on tap. Wonderful full gose staple tastes: soured wheat, lime, sea salt, vanilla, pear, melon, cranberry, hay, green apple, honey, and a large helping of funky yeasts, all brought out beautifully by the tequila barrel and oak. I say this not being a big fan of tequila, but this is one of the best goses I have had. Sure it is sour, wheaty, tart, salt, sweet, but it also has a rich booziness, a fruity finish, and a wonderfully bready base. Smell is not as nuanced as taste and feel, but still very nice. Unexpectedly amazing!
