Brut IPABrut IPA
Notes: This is our Brut IPA, a new take on IPA brewed for a bone dry champagne-style finish. Late hop additions give the beer balanced bitterness and a bright pop of citrus flavor. It's as intriguing as it is drinkable.

Bottled 12/18

Pours clear and pale gold. Finger of head withdraws slowly to a cap. Leaves behind chunky lace.

Smells floral and citrusy, lemony, and a little tart. A bit of white bread.

Tastes of lemons, crackers, some grapefruit. Long-lasting bitterness. Clean and refreshing, but not particularly IPA-like. Also not all that dry.

Lots of spritzy carbonation, mouthfeel reminds me a bit of mineral water.

Overall an interesting and refreshing brew, but it isn't very dry or hoppy, so it fails to live up to the name.

Welcome to my opening salvo for New Sierra Nevada (& Maybe Some Others) Beer Sunday (Week 727)! I was planning this CANbination since ~ Wednesday, but @JackHorzempa inspired me to begin with this one. My mother owns a house in Chico, I love SN & these Brut IPAs are right up my self-described, self-avowed hophead alley! I scored this outta the Singles section at the Friendly Greek Bottle Shop (FGBS) recently & now, I am anxious to get started.

From the Bottle: "This is our Brut IPA, a new take on IPA brewed for a bone dry champagne-style finish. Late hop additions give the beer balanced bitterness and a bright pop of citrus flavor. It's as intriguing as it is drinkable,"

I began with a Pop! of the "Fresh Seal Cap" followed by an ungentle C-Line pour into the awaiting glass. I was nonplussed when it came rushing up to form nearly three unabating fingers of foamy, fizzy, rocky, bone-white head with surprisingly excellent retention. It slowly fell away, leaving some nice lacing in its wake. Color was Straw-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was VERY citrusy, like a grapefruit/lemon/orange fruit salad! Mmm. My mouth began to water uncontrollably! Mouthfeel was medium, but it had an oily slickness on the tongue, like it wanted to slide out of my mouth & straight into my espohagus. I wouldn't allow it since I wanted to savor the citrusy flavors. It was truly wondrous, more lemony than grapefruit and with a hint of tangerine! Mmm. Finish was ... wait for it ... DRY! Bone-dry. Dry as the zephyr winds blowing across the Sahara. Dry as my late-maternal grandmother's liquor cabinet. Dry, I tell ya!

Well, that was certainly a nice start to the day.

This has to be the Oakland of IPAs. There is no there there. Il love most of the IPAs produced by Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. I bought this one because their last two releases were excellent to my taste. This one comes across as a Budweister, trying to be an IPA.

Pale golden body, large white head, good lacing.

Flavors are light, bitter pine, and that's mostly it. Very little malt, very light carbonation, very bland.

It's not terrible, but would not buy again.

12 oz. Bottle - Bottled 12/07/18
The pour looks like a light American lager. The first whiff of the aroma is saltines and lemon. The taste is very crisp and dry. It is well balanced but when I think IPA I need a little more hop presence. This is a great upgrade for a lawnmower brew!

Drier, brighter, crisper and lighter, the subculture of IPA that's in response to the haze craze would by no surprise find a comfortable home in the West Coast Sierra Nevada brewery.

Caught somewhere between a drier pale and and an India pale lager, the light chrome ale sparkles with streams of carbonation while building an arid white froth. Grain aromas bring a lightly kilned nuttiness underneath a hoppy bouquet of citrus, herb, woods and grasses before a gentle sweetness of honey, graham cracker and cereal tease the early palate but only briefly.

As the bubbles pop on the middle palate, a crisp maltiness easily sheds any sweetness and highlights the beer's raw and rustic grain character. Hops build in with orange peel, white grapefruit and a gentle drift of guava. Trending bitter, the late palate shows off an herbal medley of hay, sassafras, green tea and soft pine resins.

Light in body, the beer's Northern German pilsner-esque qualities ensure a dry, crisp and clean finish with remnants of grain husk and the greener vegetation of hop leaf standing out with a decidedly bitter finish and mild astringency for hop dominant balance and a strong thirst quenching property.

Earthy hop aroma, pours a clear straw with a thin white head. Light bodied, with a clean, crisp hop note, and a dry finish. There's a mild lingering bitter finish. If I didn't know better, I would have guessed this was a lager. Overall, it's a nice drinkable beer.

I usually love anything by this brand, so I said what the hell and bought 12. I was expecting hoppy but light. Nope. What you actually get is basically carbonated water + alcohol. I don't know how they can legally call this beer. There is nothing to hide the taste of plain rubbing alcohol, save one hop leaf per bottle. This is the actual, literal champagne of beer.

Sierra Brut is a very easy to drink beer. I wouldn’t say this is an IPA by blind test, but like the bottle says easy citrus taste and champagne bubbliness. I bought this for a party and everyone enjoyed it even non beer drinkers.

Pours a clear straw yellow with one finger of white soapy foam, blobs of lace sticking behind. Smell: grassy and lightly citric with a pilsy backing, grapey and sulfur notes. Taste: grassy, lemongrass, earthy, white grape, lemon seltzer. Light, flaccid body, watery finish. Nah. Of the first wave of nationally distributed Brut IPAs, this is at the bottom.

Brut IPA brewed by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., with an ABV of 6.20% This American Brut IPA pours out from a 12oz glass bottle into a pint beer glass. The color of this brew is a light golden amber color with a small white head. There is a nice amount of lacing to this brew, it does stick to the side of the glass well. The smell is rich with hop bitterness mixed with mild earthy grains and malts. To be honest the hops are light compared to other IPA'S on the market, not saying that is a bad thing. So far this is a nice inviting brew. Now for the taste, it is Bold an smooth with flavors. You pick up in a nice amount of hop bitterness mixed with mirror citrus flavors. There is also a nice amount of of earthy grains and malts in the taste of this brew. The body of Brut IPA is a nice soild medium. This brew would go nice with any occasion, it is nice an smooth. There is nothing overpowering about this brew, it has a super nice balance to it. It is really hard to pick up on the 6.20% ABV in this brew, it is just that smooth. The mouth feel is Bold , Rich, Clean, Hoppy, Smooth, and Refreshing. Overall I am going to give Brut IPA a 4.25 out of 5. I would definitely look this brew up again giving the opportunity to. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., did a super nice job with this brew.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/7/2018. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy pale golden yellow color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pear, melon, red apple, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, cracker, white bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and moderate pale malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pear, melon, red apple, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, cracker, white bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pear, melon, red apple, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, cracker, white bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no astringent hop flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and carbonation. Medium-plus carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and fairly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 6.2%. Overall this is a very nice brut IPA. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink with the modestly bitter/resinous/drying finish, not overly aggressive. Great Comet, Crystal, Chinook, Simcoe profile. Great mix of vibrant, dank, and earthy hop complexity; with a nice solid clean Pils malt backbone. No residual sweetness from crisp dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and great style example as expected of the brewery.

Aromas of hay and chardonnay. Herbal nose with sharp hard pear cider notes. Crisp champagne mid-palette. Gum and citrus back palette. Dry aftertaste. Immediately astringent but lingering pine and herbs beyond that. Pours with a bold head reducing to lacing. Crystal yellow gold body and active carbonation. The true champagne of beers. Very good. Recommended for the dry wine, cider or champagne lovers.
