Wheat Beer - Hefeweizen

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
California, United States
Notes: Our Bavarian-style wheat beer is complex with flavors reminiscent of banana bread and spicy clove. This hazy-golden beer glows with suspended yeast, creating a velvety texture and refreshing finish.

Kellerweis is one of the few wheat beers made using the traditional Bavarian method of open fermentation, which allows the ingredients to shine and creates vast depth and character in this hazy-golden beer. To serve, pour two-thirds into a glass, swirl the bottles and add the rest.

12 oz bottle, poured into a snifter at 40 degrees F.

Appearance: Pours a hazy straw gold, with a thick white head with decent retention.

Smell: Floral and citrus, which is not at all what one wants to smell from a hefeweizen.

Taste: And as the smell indicates, my Wall O Hop sensitivity strikes. This tastes like compost pile runoff, no other flavors perceptible.

Mouthfeel: Light and effervescent.

Overall: This is in keeping with every Sierra Nevada experience I have had, with the exceptions of Narwhal and Tumbler. Please discontinue this. It is emphatically not an actual hefeweizen.

Appearance- Golden yellow and hazy. Pours a white, pillowy two to three finger head.

Aroma- Sweet citrus fruits, a little clove spice, and a sweet grainy wheat malt.

Taste- More on the citrusy side for a hefeweizen, with lemon combining very nicely with a banana fruit flavor. Mild clove spice flavor adds some bitterness. Wheat malt adds sweetness to the fruit flavors and dryness in the finish.

Feel- Medium bodied, medium/high carbonation, and very pleasant feel overall with a crisp yet creamy/chewy feel.

Overall- No doubt about it that is a world class hefeweizen. The feel is perfect with a creamy/chewy texture and the flavor combo of citrus/banana is nearly perfect. Maybe a tiny bit more characteristic clove spice would enhance this, but that's subjective and nitpicking. Can't always get some of the great german hefe's fresh, but I have no doubt this stacks up to the best of em. If this gets removed from the SN yearly lineup that will be a damn shame.

I had been looking forward to trying this for a year or so and was disappointed. I am a huge fan of Weihenstephaner, Hofbrau, Franziskaner, Hacker-Pschorr and other authentic German beers.

This Kellerweis - airy but with a strong blast of American tasting, piney hops mixes with a bit of Grapefruit. Not even close, sorry. If you drink authentic Hefeweizen often you would know exactly what I mean on the first tiny sip.

Not a style I look to find very often but after seeing the reviews I wanted to try it,Iam glad I did.Poured into a weizen glass a hazed golden with a shade of peach,a frothy large head atop settled very slowly into a creamy mass leaving mulitple sheets of lace behind.Aromas of banana and some toasty grain, the clove-spice is not overpowering wich is nice.Nice creamy mouthfeel its full but airy light if you can understand that.Flavors are fruity up front with some lemon pith to go along with the big banana notes, the clove and toasted cereal grain flavors finish up.A great hot weather brew well rounded and flavorful, likely the best of the style I have had I think.

Consumed 7/12/16

A: Bright yellow gold - crystal clear - pours with a medium-large, bright white head, fades to a nearly solid cap and a medium collar, leaves streaks of lacing

S: German hefe yeast and wheat - interesting yeasty aromas, including ripe banana, bubblegum, phenols, pepper, and some clove - pale malts and light bread - wheaty, like a box of cereal - some earthiness

T: Simple in a very good way - yeasty flavors, with some straight-up yeast, banana, bubblegum, and black pepper - some light fruitiness and hint of citrus - nice malt base, with some pale malts, pale grains, light bread, wheat, and whole-wheat bread - minimal bitterness - finishes dry and clean

M: Medium body, medium carbonation, crisp, clean finish

O: I recently offended myself when I discovered I never reviewed this beer

Seriously. I've had Kellerweis on more than one occasion. It's an easy-drinking hefe that also stays true to its roots. Kellerweis is not the first thing I think of when I think Sierra Nevada, but they do a good job on the style, just as they do with just about every style in existence.

12oz bottle to my FW Imperial Nonic glass
First noted on 07.18.15

Another style slayer from Sierra Nevada
Golden blonde body. Thoroughly hazed unfiltered look. Adorned with a neat stack of paper white foam. Dense and lasting like shave cream as it clings to the glass walls upon each sip.
Fruit gum and toasted wheat grain with clovey spices and a dash of banana peel. Funny my notes read more like some kind of funky bread recipe but in actuality a pretty tasty brew it does make for. Creamy and smooth with minimal bitterness. Touch of citrus peel noted.
Goes down super smooth. One of the better Hefe’s I have come across which isn’t saying a whole lot but hey.

So good. I have had just about every hefe out there and combo thereof. I bought this in a pinch because the store was out of Weistephaner but this was cloudier and has double the sediment of Weinstephaner. This is my go to now. So fucking good if you like this style.

L: Cloudy banana yellow, two finger white fluffy head has good retention.

S: Rich spices of clove and coriander, with a hint of white pepper. Banana and apple. Nice:

T: Follows the nose well. Nice.

F: Light, low carbonation, lingering banana note.

O: Nice beer. True to style and tasty.

This is a very good example of Hefeweizen style. Pours hazy straw yellow with white head. Lots of aroma going on. Taste is spot on for this style. I will buy this one again. An excellent American example of this style. Weihenstephan Hefenweizen is my favorite German beer.

I love a good hefeweizen. This was an uninspiring attempt at best. All the classic hallmarks are there but barely noticeable. Banana and clove barely perceived , soft velvety creamy head missing entirely. You can only tell this is a hefeweizen by comparing it pale ales. What a disappointment.

12oz brown bottle, coded freshness date on the label.

Massive head from pouring 2/3's of the beer into the glass, sediment swirled in for a dirty cloudy straw color. Banana taffy, powdered clove and chalky yeast play well against the breadiness ... banana bread? Deep smoothness that still retains a crisp snap in the back, medium bodied is not too much for the style. Semi-thick bready character throughout, mild spicing and faint esters. Overripe fruit and clove, some tartness adds a refreshing quality. Semi-dry finish.

Absolutely remarkable that this beer has flown under my radar for so long. Giving the Germans a run with this one.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass:

Appearance: hazy, light-yellow with visible carbonation/yeast rising from the center of the glass. thick, sudsy head atop, which lingers for awhile.

Aroma: cracker malt, along with a bit of allspice and a lot of banana bread.

Taste: lots of malt, and lots of banana once again. Yeast is definitely the dominant flavor here, and it is minimally hopped. It's light and refreshing.

Feel: light to medium body, with a clean, crisp mouthfeel.

Overall: an easy drinker and a good one at that.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Shaker pint glass.

APPEARANCE: pours a very densely, clouded, golden color with one finger off-white head that dissipated until a thin broken layer of bubbles remained, there was very little lacing on the glass, lighter carbonation (I think?) as could not really see the bubbles through the dense haze, beautiful.

SMELL: sweet, flowery, citrus, banana bread and some spice, there is a lot going on with the nose on this one, in a word complex.

TASTE: the taste follows the nose, initially sweet and citrus, then some banana bread and spice, a mild hop profile as you would expect for this style, wonderful.

PALATE: lighter carbonation, the notes on bottle state "velvety texture", I'll go along with that, it has it's own mouth feel for sure.

OVERALL: this beer will be hard to top, this is my favorite Hefeweizen hands down, another great beer from Sierra Nevada, the ABV 4.8% allows me to enjoy more than one, if you enjoy the style this has to be a favorite. I'll be having this again for sure.

This is a great hefeweizen. Very balanced flavors between the cloves, banana notes, and citrus. IF you are looking for big malt or hops flavors, then look elsewhere, this is spices and finsihing flavors through and through. I'm very glad I gave this beer a try.

A: Poured from the bottle into a snifter, swirling twice to get all of the yeast at the bottom. The beer is a very pale hazy orange with yellow highlights. Fluffy white head started off strong, but quickly died down to a thin layer at the top. Lacing is evident if not overwhelming.

S: Smell is all spice. There is a little banana in there and just the faintest touch of hops. I guess cloves are the closest to what I'm smelling. I recognize the aroma, but I can't place it exactly.

T: Lackluster. The yeast flavor is not as prevalent as I would like and the beer tastes a little off, like it has gone bad. Kind of like drinking a hefe out of a cardboard box. Bittering hops are definitely up front and battle a little with the flavor of the beer. Not nearly as much spice here as in the aroma.

M: This beer a little thinner than I expected and kind of feels flat on the tongue.

D: A refreshing beer, but not one that I could session. One or two would be plenty, thanks.

Overall: I am really surprised at how highly this beer is rated. It comes up well short of the better hefes I've had (Franziskaner and Live Oak) and fails to impress.

This pours a translucent golden colour with a thin white head that has half decent retention. The nose brings forward citrus notes, banana, bread and spices like clove. The clove comes forward in the taste along with lemon loaf, pale malts and yeast. The mouthfeel is slightly slippery and lingers for a bit. A refreshing drink that would go well with a light patio lunch.

Bottle has the numbers 3085116 50 on the neck and 052 13 C2 0559 S on the bottom of the bottle. Numbers people understand the meaning of would be nice for dating purposes.

Poured from the 12oz bottle into a hefeweizen glass from Dick's in LoDo Denver. Pours a yellow cream color, like banana and creamcicle mixture. Head is fairly large in size, about two fingers in size. Not much lacing present and as I mis the rest of the yeast with the beer, the head recedes.

Aroma is phenolic and clove-like. Very yeasty, lemon, not much banana if any at all. Slight bit or peppery spice.

Clean crisp flavors. The yeast and lemon are quite prevalent with some clove and coriander spice as well. The aftertaste is bready and yeasty.

A decent beer. The style is not my favorite. As mentioned in the style parameters, I think this would go great with a little slice of lemon for added flavor and acidity. Light bodied and refreshing, a great summertime beer. Overall, it was a little bland for me.

A: Beautiful semi hazy deep gold with a dense but at the same time fluffy looking 1.5 finger white head. Some sediment on the bottom.

S: Bubble-gum initially that transitions into banana to wheat to cloves, and back to banana.

T: Your taste buds travel down the same transitions as your nose, but with a wonderful vanilla constant. The malt is pronounced, with spicy undertones that dissipates and returns to wheat. My only complaint is not enough acid/lemon flavor to balance the sweet banana/vanilla/bubble-gum.

M: It's creamy and the vanilla leaves a swirling warming affect. Upping the carbonation would probably cut down on this almost "warm" feeling but I don't think I would want that.

D: doesn't leave you quenched due to the creaminess and light carbonation, but I could easily spend a whole day drinking this.

Thanks Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. for this wonderful offering.

12 oz. bottle poured into wheat beer glass

L: pale yellow, half misty ... can see through it some; fluffy 2/3-inch head of white foam, surprisingly no stick or lace, but it keeps a fully skin of white foam on top with a massive white collar; looks like a bubble factory in the column ... hundreds and hundreds of very tiny bubbles cascade up to the top

S: banana ... classic wheat beer, sweet and light and fruity; butterscotch

T: follows the nose 1-to-1 and the first few sips are so sweet you'd swear you're drinking a good tripel. the banana and fruit notes never sour

F: perfect ... it's very full yet very light and drinkable ... seriously, it doesn't get better than this

O: lives up to Sierra Nevada's sterling reputation ... I've yet to have a bad beer from them, and this falls right in line with the rest of their goodness. a great, easy, light hefeweizen that's perfect for this Texas summer but so tasty I imagine I'd love one of these in any climate at any time.

Pours a cloudy golden color, with a white tint. A small head, almost a finger, that shrinks but sticks around.

Smell is strong grains, with ripe bananas and notes of spices like coriander and cloves. Sweet, and fruity.

Strong grains again, followed by fruitiness and spice. Rich, with a slightly tart finish.

Good carbonation, smooth and clean going down.

Solid hefeweizen, perfect beer to chill and crack open on a warm summer day.
