A single 12 ounce bottle picked up at the Beer Stop for around $1.50. Poured into my standard half-liter hefe glass. After following the advice on the label and swirling up the yummies on the bottom of the bottle while pouring, the hefe appears a murky, cloudy bright golden straw yellow color with a good two fingers of bone white foam. Nose and flavors consist of fresh, ripe banana slices brushed with a good amount of lemon juice, wonderfully spicy yeast, fresh cracked black pepper, some clove notes, bready yeast, fresh wheat. Great creamy, nearly full (for a hefe) body with adequate carbonation. Well, it didn't take long for my glass to become empty. A fantastic, sessionable summer hefe. I'm going back for more...

12oz bottle poured into a shaped pint glass.

Sierra Nevada Kellerweis Hefeweizen poured hazy pale yellow with a massive bubbly head that quickly disappeared.

A strong banana smell popped during the pour, but gave way to yeasty clove smell and taste. The feel is dominated by too much sparkle that had a negative impact on drinkability.

To be fair, I'm not a hefe lover; however, as hefes go, Sierra Nevada Kellerweis Hefeweizen is on the mark.

Poured into a wheat glass. A nice hazy yellow color with a flowery head that sticks around and laces the glass. The smell is light as well, hint of cloves.

The taste is of smooth and soft with a slight banana flavor that really goes down well. A beer great for the summer that I could drink all day. Another great brew from Sierra Nevada.

12-oz bottle poured into a weizen.

A = Pours a decent hazy orange with a large frothy head.

S = Light cloves, some lemon, not as much banana as I prefer, but still well within the range of acceptable hefe smells.

T = I found the taste slightly disappointing. It is good but the clove and banana flavors are very subdued, while there is a little too much of a watery taste mid-palate. Again, it is good enough to enjoy drinking and is within style, but just not quite as forceful as I would like.

M = Good medium body, smooth and frothy.

D = This is a very easy drinking beer and is a good pick for a hot Summer BBQ or something.

Sierra Nevada Kellerbrau HefeWeizen

Highly hazed, bright straw yellow color, big bountiful snowy white head.

Lemony aromatics at first, soft spice, light and lovely...creamy hefe weizen yeast in the nose.

Yummy wheat texture, mouthfeel, vast drinkability, enormous refreshment. Floods the mouth and thrills the senses. Light-to-medium bodied. Mellow. Great summer brew. I'll be stocking up while the heat's still ablazing.

A- Cloudy golden yellow with a huge off white head. Pour slowly and carefully. Head last forever but leaves little lace on the glass.

S- Subdued banana, clove and spice. True to the style but not exceptional.

T- Follows the nose. Sweet at first with banana and citrus. There is a nice burst of spice, mostly clove at the middle. Finish is dry and semisweet, slightly bitter final note.

M- On the mark for the style, light in the mouth and well carbonated. Not as smooth or as creamy as most that I've tried though.

D- Easy summer drinker. At 4.8% ABV this is a session beer.

Pretty good example of a Hefe, nothing to put it over the top though.

What you have here is a very drinkable Hefeweizen. Don't those crazies out there in California know that this style isn't supposed to be so perfect. I guess that would be the only thing you could find wrong with it, it's too perfect.

I want to see junk floating around in this style - kinda like when you see an egg shell, you know it's not powdered eggs.

In reality, a little more bite would make it better. Maybe less sweet. Overall it is a thoroughly enjoyable and drinkable brew, though, and one I would recommend but won't necessarily pass something else to get.

12oz bottle. Pours pale-gold, opaque, with a substantial head. Fine looking, with persistent lacing throughout.

Taste is not super complex, with spicy cloves most prominent. Not heavy on the banana or other sweet characteristics that you might expect. Mouthfeel is light, meaning, at 4.8%, this is highly drinkable.

12 oz bottle poured 2/3, swirled and finished into imperial pint

A: HUGE fluffy off-white head that slowly dissipated a and left good lacing, golden honey color but very cloudy with the yeast, a beauty

S: musty straw, clove, and yeasty breadiness, no hops to speak of...to style but not mind blowing

T: bubblegum and bannana with a small amount of clove and alcohol flavor at the end...

M: Carbonation has a bit of a bite but swishing in the mouth makes that same carbonation turn creamy...maybe the yeast is part of the scenario. in any case, it is pleasant.

-ABV in reasonable ranage - Check
-Flavor and mouthfeel on-point and allow for a clean palatte - Check
-Delicious - Check

Get out and get some...good work, Sierra Nevada. You're 2 for 2 with winners with this and Torpedo.

A: Poured into a weizen glass consistent with the directions on the bottle (i.e., pour 2/3 of the bottle, swirl the remainder and pour it in). Body is cloudy pale yellow in color with a 3-finger fluffy white head. Some lace left behind up top. Nice-looking hefe.

S: The usual hefe suspects: bananas and lemon with a faint hint of spice and generic fruitiness. Not overwhelming in strength, however.

T: "Light and refreshing" is the first impression. There's a bit of lemony citrus and a hint of bananas over wheat tangy spice. Finishes very clean with a lemony dryness at the end.

M: Light-to-medium (closer to light) in heft, with a fairly smooth feel to it.

D: Excellent. Glass is empty quickly.

12 oz bottle, wheat glass

Great appearance with a hazy blonde color, big creamy head and lots of retention & lacing.

Aroma of cloves, bananas and citrus. Some earthy aroma as well. I felt it could have been stronger

Flavor of cloves, spices, bananas and orange. Also picked up some lemon and I believe plum. Flavor of malts present. Very balanced and diverse.

Smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Easy to drink and refreshing. Good choice for a summer brew.

Poured into my weizen glass. Pours a very cloudy light gold with a big frothy white head filling the rest of the glass. Retention is fair, and it leaves plenty of sticky lacing all over the glass. Smells spicy with hints of bubblegum and banana bread mixed in. Very refreshing.

The mouthfeel is bubbly and crisp. Plenty of carbonation in this one. This is a very unoffensive Hefe. Nice balance of sweetness and spice. There's even a bit of a hop bite lingering on the finish. This is a very solid beer that, when in the mood for this style, I would glady stock in my fridge.

A: Hazy gold color with an orange tint. Poured a 2 finger white head that dissipated to an even skim. Decanted continually. Lacing washed down the glass.

S: Slightly sweet bready aroma. Citrus, orange peel and clove. Pleanty of yeast notes.

T: Bready and sweet. Spices blend evenly. Light sweetness lingers into bitter finish. Crisp and refreshing.

M: Light-to-medium body. Ample carbonation. Refreshing and bit fizzy; crisp.

D: Very drinkable beer in a drinkable style. Good flavors and aromas from a balance of malt, hops and yeast.

From 12oz bottle

A- Pours a hazy/murky deep golden yellow with some orange highlights to it. Nice 1 finger white head which died away pretty quick leaving no real lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Musty bready smell off the bat. Picking up some small hints of orange peel and clove. Big Belgian yeasty smell though. Smells wonderful!

T- Nice musty bready bite to this. Very clean tasting. Can detect a faint trace of the alcohol. Clove and a strange banana-y taste along with this.

M- Light-medium mouthfeel to this. Very crisp and clean tasting. Carbonation is good for the style and really gives the beer a push across the palate. A great presence of yeast on the tounge after a sip.

D- This is a very easy drinker and maybe one of the best american hefeweizens I have had the pleasure of drinking. Would and will drink again. Also would recommend to people who want something to bring them in easy to the style!

served from a 12oz. bottle into a pint glass

Pours a very hazy shade of honeyed lemon. The clean, white head is tremendously fluffy at 3 fingers or so before eventually settling down to a 1/2 finger ring. Lacing is pretty much nonexistent, however. Must be the glass.

The aromas are on-point as far as being traditional. The banana is there on first whiff. You get the clove, too, but its overshadowed by the tangy lemon/citrus scents.

The predominant citrus in the nose follows through on the tongue; lemon flavor coats the tongue from the get-go. Subsequent quaffing yields the smooth banana flavor and some bubblegum estery goodness. The zip from the wheat is appreciated, but the grain bill is deeper than that... there is some bready flavor that reminds me of sourdough. Some may prefer a greater presence of clove and spices -- this beer is comparatively light on clove -- but its a plus for me.

I love the mouthfeel on SN Kellerweisse! It manages to be creamy, in a sense, while still remaining light. The slightly aggressive carbonation serves to highlight the lemon flavor. Drinkability is, by extension, superb. The refreshing flavors and great feel serve to make a beer that you want to keep on drinking. The lessened clove presence speaks to my preferences and raises this beer's subjective drinkability for me, too.

All-in-all, this is a pretty wonderful take on the hefewiezen style. It has all of the flavor and refreshment that you could ask for.

12oz. brown bottle served in a shaker pint. Poured a cloudy, pale gold with a big white head. Plenty of carbonation which is typical of the style. Spicy aroma with more clove than banana, which is how I prefer a hefe. Light to medium body. More banana in the flavor and some wheaty spice. They really nailed the creamy mouthfeel that you typically only get in a German Hefe. Seems to be some noble hops in there. Dry finish. One of the best American takes on Hefe.

The beer pours a cloudy pale gold color with a 1/2" white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a nice pale and wheat malt scent along with a citrus character and the lovely hefe yeast aroma. The taste is good. It has a solid malt taste that boasts of pale and wheat malts. Again, it has a powerful citrus flavor and just a slight banana/clove finish. It's quite crisp and refreshing; not a real heavy hefe. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium bodied beer with good carbonation. This is a highly quaffable hefe. It explodes with a nice mix of hefe yeast, citrus, and malts; a wonderful summer brew.

12 oz bottle poured as instructed into a DFH snifter. Last third of the bottle is swirled to rouse the yeast

A - Orange and cloudy, with a finger and a half of pillowy foam. Dissipates fairly quickly

S - Banana, spicy phenolic nose. This is certainly a hefe

T - Banana bomb. Yeast smacks you in the tongue. Wheat malt rounds out the beer nicely.

M - High amount of carbonation tickles the tongue. No bitterness to speak of, just a spicy banana flavor

D - Very drinkable, if you are in the mood for a hefe. Would be great on a hot day.

Very good for the style, but not my favorite style of beer. I'd be interested to see how this tastes with <gasp!>... a lemon.

Poured from bottle into pint glass. Large, silky head with barely-visible vanilla swirls inside the golden orange liquid. The aroma of sweet spice and delicate orange strikes the nose. The taste is incredibly smooth and immediately transported me back to Munich drinking a Franziskaner in the dining car to the Swiss Alps. The hop taste is very subversive and lets the spice and fruit steal the show. The most flavorful Hefeweizen I've had in the US.

Poured from abottle into my pint glass the beer is a cloudy yellow orange with head that seems to touch the ceiling. The head is thick and creamy I want to put a cherry on top and eat it with a spoon. OK now that it's settled down it leaves a tiny bit of lace around my glass. The aroma is bananas right out of the gate. Clove and sweet bubble gum. I'm getting a faint earthy black dirt smell as well. The flavor is much like the nose. Banana and clove are the most dominant with a biscuity finish. Fairly dry with mild carbonation. Medium body as far as feel goes. This is a good hefe. Not the best I've had but very drinkable nonetheless.

Six-pack purchased in Columbus for about $8-9. This is my 3rd bottle, these are going down easy (4.8% ABV).

The beer is hazy and pale yellow, with a ridiculous amount of foam, I can't pour the bottle into a pint glass in one go, no matter how gently I approach it. The foam leaves lacy vestiges as it recedes. The smell is classic bananas and, I guess, clove. Same with the taste, much delicious. Easily competitive with fresh Bavarian stuff. Medium-to-chewy body, I like this beer a lot.

A - Hazy, pale yellow-gold. A gritty layer of particulate at the bottom of the bottle adds extra cloudiness when swirled and poured. Medium-sized head with good retention. Moderate to weak lacing.

S - Mine smelled almost exactly the same as Great Lakes Grassroots Ale, and no, that is not a compliment. Like deviled eggs, baked beans or the water that collects at the bottom of a cooler or picnic basket. Pretty disgusting.

T - First taste is of wheat and citrus, then banana takes over. Would be better without the slight "rotten" taste that accompanies that putrid smell.

M - Mouthfeel is pretty good. Creamy, well carbonated, smooth and refreshing.

D - What can I say? I just don't feel like having another one when I lower my nose back into that glass. The taste is not that bad, and the mouthfeel is great, but I really expected more from this hefe.

I could not believe how well-reviewed this Kellerweis was, compared to my experience with it. I bought this six-pack from a Giant Eagle grocery store, and come to think of it there WAS a little bit of white dust on the tops and necks of the bottles, but I just blew it off and forgot about it. There is no freshness or brewed-on date on the bottle, so I can only guess as to whether or not it was past-prime. Maybe I'll contact SN to find out.

12 oz. bottle, 4.8% ABV. Pours a cloudy, bright gold color. White fluffy head disappears after a couple minutes. Not much lace here either.

Lots of banana and bubblegum in the nose. A bit of clove, and a hint of tartness round things out, and make it seem very true to style.

Tartness comes in up front, but nice and subtle. A wave of banana comes in next, and fades into bubblegum. Minimal amount of clove. A slight citrus note at the end.

Light body, needs a bit more carbonation to liven it up. Very easy to drink, and refreshing.

I heard good things about this brew, and I finally got around to trying it. It pours an appropriate hazy straw color, but the head isn't as big as I would expect for a German-style hefeweizen. The aroma is okay, but it's too light and weak. It doesn't have enough of the traditional clove/spice that I enjoy. There is some of that, but there's also some sour-ish character to the nose. The taste has (some of) the characteristics of German hefes that I look for, but there's also a light addition of lemon along with a stronger tartness than I usually like in my hefes. The mouthfeel is too thin for the style. The more I sip on this brew, the more the watery-ness becomes apparent and disappointing. Still, this beer is a nice, refreshing stab at a German hefe. You certainly couldn't go wrong when drinking one of these on a hot Summer day. Lawnmower and/or session beer? Sure...a fine choice and sooo much better than any macro or some other light ale/lager. To be fair, this is one of the better American-made German hefes I've had in a while. With that being said, I prefer a true-German hefe. I even did a blind tasting with this SN hefe and some German hefe, and I preferred a German version. Oh well, I'm still happy to see SN brewing something like this and doing a respectable job with it.
