OMG, what's dank about this beer? It almost tastes like an boring NE IPA I don't even know if it's as good as some of those. Ok, it's not, this beer fucking stinks. On rye. I am so done with the state of boring craft beer this year, wait, I'm starting to get a little bite, wait ... I'll check the can date. thank goodness I only bought the one for $2.50 not the entire 6 pak for $14.

Here's hoping this year's Celebration (my first craft beer ever, a long time ago) is up to par. ridiculous.

Consumed 5/22/22

Orange-copper, clear, pours with a medium sized off-white head, fades to wisps, retains a small collar and leaves some nice lacing
Hoppy in a lot of ways, but I do not think "dank" is at the top of that list, orange, orange zest, ruby red grapefruit, lemon, lime, citrus rinds, herbal hops, earthy hops, some pine, pine resin, spice, hints of fruit punch, white grapes, apricots, medium-high bitterness that lingers, caramel grain sweetness, lingering resin in the finish
Medium body, smooth but in a resinous/oily way, medium carbonation

Dankful tastes like recipes from a 2010 DIPA and a modern IPA (with fancy newfangled hops) were combined as an experiment. At the very least, it's interesting. There is a lot going on with the hops, and not all of it is great, but I very much enjoy the aggressive and haphazard approach.

12oz undated bottle.

Pours clear copper with a half-inch head of the white. Moderate retention and lacing. Piney and a bit malty in the nose but not dank. Medium bodied with a slightly tacky mouthfeel. Pine and crystal malt on the palate. Finishes with malt and pine.

Pours a clear dark gold with a medium persistent head. Smell is great- dank for sure. Resinous. Taste is very hoppy- much like the smell, dank and resinous, maybe a little pine and bitter grapefruit. Bitter. Not balanced. But that's the point.
It's refreshing to have an IPA like this if you've been drinking a lot of NEIPA's. Bitter and dank is exactly what I want from my IPA's. Full bodied. Great beer.

Appearance - Pours a reddish copper with three fingers of frothy white head.

Smell - citrus, earthy, floral, herbal, leafy, and piney hops, pine resin, grapefruit and citrus peel, caramel, bready malts, and earthy yeast.

Taste - citrus, earthy, piney hops upfront. The other hops are lost in translation but that's ok as the citrus and piney hops take precedence. The pine resin, grapefruit and citrus peel follow suit. The caramel, bready malts and earthy yeast round out the brew.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes sticky with the pine resin and caramel lingering.

Overall - A highly drinkable brew that has a nice story behind the brew. This one is definitely a hoppy one and worth a go if you're curious.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. "Dankful IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle "PKGD 10/14/21 M 1002" and sampled on 03/05/22
$21.69/"Hoppy Sampler" 12pk @ Javies Beverage, Philadelphia, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: The label reads "GENEROUSLY HOPPY" and I'm hoping that's the case. It's poured a hazy deep amber with golden highlights beneath a standard-sized head of white foam. The aroma is resinous, piney, fruity, and sweetish with caramelish malt. The fruitiness is complex, and yet simple in the way that fruit punch is. I'm finding berries, apple, orange, and a light touch of lemon-lime. Interesting. I thought for some reason that it might be more "dank" but I'm OK with it as it is. On to the taste then... I don't think that anyone will be surprised to find that it tastes very much like it smells. I'm getting it in pretty much the same order that I did the aroma. There's an additional white grape/gooseberry note at the end, and I think it's overall more "dank" as that kind of sticks with me in the finish. The malt is gently sweet with a medium caramel character, and balanced by a firm bitterness and some spiciness. How strong is this? 7.4% - that's decent, and I don't really find it unless that's what's lending the spiciness, which I doubt. Nor does it seem like hops. Is this a rye beer? It seems like it. That would explain the spiciness in the finish, and also why it seems more "dank". I should also note that as I've progressed through the glass there's been a switch away from the fruitiness and more towards the spiciness and resin. The head held up pretty well but now all I've got is a thin, partial surface covering and standard collar. There's really not a lot of lacing left either. I reviewed another Sierra Nevada beer yesterday, the Atomic Torpedo, and the head retention and lacing were much better. It's the same glass, I just rinsed it with hot water afterwards and set it to air-dry so I highly doubt it's my glass. OK, what else? In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, moderate carbonation. It's lightly zesty upfront but then smooth in the finish. I really like this beer. It's complex without being all over the board, and it's really nicely balanced and rounded. That's what Sierra Nevada does best, and they haven't dropped the ball here.

12oz bottle, from the variety pack. "Columbus, Chinook, Ekuanot, Idaho 7, Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin, Zappa hops used"

Nice unfiltered look, no big chunks unfortunately. Smells lemony and limey. The taste has a nice creamy malty backing to a very "green" and wet and grassy (in both senses of the word) IPA. Flat, like the end of a bottle but all the way through. It's bitter and dank, but it's also boring / forgettable

OK stuff

Look...Yellowish brown with very little haze. Light white head
Smell...Like most shelf beers light and hop citrus. Very faint
Taste...a brilliant hop dankness off the get. Powers over to a full malt bitter. very pleasant. A real fullness that is very nice
Feel...ample carbonation with a good zestiness that is sticky, resinous
Overall...this is well made and would like to have again. I believe I will get another of those Hoppy samplers. Sierra just make some great stuff

12 oz bottle from the 12 pack variety style:

This has a smorgasbord of hop strains.
Seriously zesty, resinous, fruity, tangy, green, peppery and zippy. Mid to high in complexity hop wise.

Balanced with a medium powered amber and golden style malty backbone.

Juicy feel with a piney, zippy earth toned bite. I feel like this one has alot to love.

From a SN IPA Variety pack.
L: Pours the color of anew penny with big, frothy off-white head that leaves a nice cap and some outstanding lacing.
S: Piney hop aroma.
T: Citrus flavor, bitter, hoppy finish.
F: Medium bodied, nicely carbonated.
O: This is one SN IPA that I probably won't buy again.

355 mL can from the Toronto Brewing 2021 advent calendar; dated 6/23/2021 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a foggy medium golden colour, with more than an inch of puffy, foamy white head gathering atop; it lasts for the better part of five minutes, gradually withering down to a creamy collar and patchy cap. In the meantime, gobs of delicate, webby lacing are deposited onto the glass - looks great. Fruity and hoppy on the nose, giving impressions of white grape, papaya, grapefruit and pineapple; hints of apricot and caramelized sugars, with notes of earthy, herbal hops, pine needles and resiny weed.

Tasty stuff - I'm getting bready pale malts and caramel at the forefront, which are summarily overrun by the hop flavours that follow - pink grapefruit, orange, peaches in syrup and maybe a hint of something like pineapple or bubble gum. After that, the profile takes a turn towards bitter hoppiness - a bit floral, quite earthy, with pine resiny notes reverberating into a bitter aftertaste that includes lingering suggestions of tropical fruit. Medium-full in body, with low carbonation and a soft, creamy texture that feels very nice on the tongue, aiding this IPAs exceptional drinkability. I could've easily gone for another can afterwards - 12 oz just wasn't enough.

Final Grade: 4.24, an A-. Sierra Nevada's Dankful is an old-school west coast IPA through and through - I think I'd take this over their Torpedo, but I suppose I'd need to try them side-by-side to know for sure, as they're both very good India pale ales. Of course, this can is nearing seven months old - far from ideal for an IPA, so even though I loved this beer as it is, I'd always be open to a re-review if I stumble upon a younger sample. Highly recommended to any and all hopheads with an affinity for the classics.

Included in a mixed Hoppy 12pack. Excellent beer IMO and it tastes better when it warms up a bit. I don't get any "dank" weed smell out this beer. It might be too bitter when dranken -cold.

12oz bottled either 8-24-21 or 9-24-21...hard to read. Opened 12-25-21.
2 finger dense, off-white head with a fine bead and masterful retention.
Copper penny, bright with a slight chill haze.
Floral, pine, some citrus...smells like Sierra Nevada.
Sweet orange and pine. Marmalade.
Medium body and carbonation, prickly mouthfeel. Bitter and lengthy semi-sweet finish.
Good.

12 ounce bottle in a plastic party cup.

Bright orange-copper color with a hint of chill murkiness. Lasting white cap that managed to leave some lacing inside of the plastic cup.

Lots of herbal and floral hop aromas. Very earthy. Open to the underground space. The malt comes through as beer soaked baking dough.

Pine jumps aboard the flavor profile which remains very earthy and hoppy.

Medium bodied, resinous, lingering hop bitterness.

Strong aromas and flavors, which aid it’s drinkability at 7.4% abv. Very good.

Pours a stunning amber-copper color, moderate head with good lacing and carbonation rising to the top enticingly.

Aroma is of floral, earthy hops with some hemp coming to the forefront. Good but subdued

Taste is bitter, hempy hops. A bit of citrus, pine, and faint grassy malts. Much more solid than the aroma would have you believe.

Mouthfeel is oily and pleasant

Overall the best way I can describe it is from a Brazilian jiu jitsu analogy. This beer is an upper belt who forsakes berimbolos for basic, solid, fundamental techniques but does them with perfect execution and mastery. That’s this beer. It’s not flashy or combined with a bunch of brain melting tasting traits but it’s just a solid, good, IPA.

Pale amber color, good clarity. Pours a pretty big head that lingers.

Earthy, herbal hop aroma very pungent and volatile. Also a slight fruity sweetness in the nose.

A bit malty sweet and quite hop flavored up front. Hop flavors are very smooth and nicely balanced. Some pineapple/pine/grapefruit to the hops, but finishes with more of an earthy hop flavor. Transition to the finish is quite gentle. Hop bitterness is subtle at first, but becomes more noticeable in the finish with repeated sips.

Medium body and med-high carbonation. Between the bitterness and the carbonation it scrubs the palate fairly clean. No astringency.

A normal, solid IPA offering from SN. Not as wacky as I expected from the name, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Aroma stood out to me more than the flavor.

From a Hoppy Sampler mix 12-pack. Pours a dark golden, semi-opaque with some fluffy head that dissipates into an inviting lacing. I would have expected a bit more on the aroma, but there are hints of pine, grass, grapefruit, and, yes, Mary Jane. Taste and feel are really what set this one over the top. Yes, it's slightly bitter (as expected with a SN IPA) but it's not over the top and is really well balanced. Definitely a top offering from SN, in my opinion.
