Atomic TorpedoAtomic Torpedo
Notes: Atomic Torpedo is our East Coast–West Coast hop collision, unleashing the joint power of two styles: juicy East Coast IPAs and dank West Coast IPAs. Fused in this Double IPA, their hop favors span lush fruit, sticky pine, and floral tones. It’s our classic IPA transformed—soft yet assertive, approachable yet atomic.

Appearance - Pours a clear copper with four fingers of frothy white head that leaves some spotty lace on the glass.

Smell - piney, earthy, citrus, floral, leafy, and weedy hops, pine resin, grapefruit and citrus peel, apricot, hint of mango, caramel, bready malts, and earthy yeast.

Taste - bitter piney, earthy, citrus, floral, leafy, and weedy hops upfront. The pine resin is quite potent in this one followed by the grapefruit and citrus peel, apricot, and hint of mango. The caramel, bready malts, and earthy yeast round out the brew.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes sticky with the hops, pine resin, and grapefruit peel lingering.

Overall - A dangerously quaffable brew that delivers quite the punch from the hops alongside the pine resin and fruits. The ABV is well hidden in this one as well. This one is a fine tipple on the Friday evening here in Cowtown.

19.2oz can. Canning date stamped on can bottom is '063022'.
Clear, deep gold colored body. Three fingers of frothy white head. Leaves behind webs of lacing.
Aroma has a toasted malt base, with citrus, woody, and piney hops.
Taste has a bread base, but the hops are the main flavor contributors. Sweet orange and grapefruit early and then later, more bitter pine resin. More resin than fruit in the aftertaste.
More than medium mouth feel. Kind of sticky. Very good carbonation.
Just the ticket when more bitter resin is wanted. Very good balance for this standard imperial West Coast IPA.

Burnished gold color with a thick and lasting head, many fine bubbles streaming up. Huge citrusy, resinous aroma! Flavor offers plenty of hop notes, again with a lot of pine resin character, together with a substantial malt presence and a somewhat heavy body. This is more a savoring beer than a quaffing beer.

Coming in hot, Sierra Nevada releases bigger, bolder and explosive Torpedo flavors on the hop-scape spanning from East Coast to West Coast with their aggression at atomic levels.

Expanding upon their Torpedo IPA, Atomic Torpedo does even more, starting off with a light honey amber color caught in a light hazy glow. A slight tarnish froth floats the rim just as a rife, fruity, herbal and caramelized scent draws in the senses. Sweet with light honey, caramel and toasty sweetness a sense of granola come about.

The hops rise on the middle palate just as the malt sweetness starts to relax. Strong hop impressions of pink grapefruit, orange zest, and lemon balm take a citrusy tone while more tropical flavors of pineapple and mango add more tropical complements. Stone fruits of apricot and plum carry into an herbal and tea-like bitterness laced with hemp. pine needles, fresh cut grass and a general resinous bite.

Full bodied and lacking the bitterness of the standard Torpedo IPA, this more juicy version certainly amplifies the flavors but it comes at a cost. The collateral damage has cost the session the bitter dryness that makes its predecessor so effective.

Pours a deep amber color will the two finger pillowy head.

Smells very earthy as of grass.

Very piny mixed with citrus to start, very earthy grassy taste in the middle, with a mild hoppy finish in a malty backbone the whole way through.

19.2oz can poured into a Tulip glass.
Appearance is hazy copper with 2.5 fingers of white head. Retention is average.
Medium-low strength of aroma. The smell has pine and tropical fruit.
Slightly below medium-high strength of taste. The flavor has pine, herbal, passion fruit, a slightly less than medium hop bitter finish and a hint of alcohol flavor that is slightly warming.
Thickness is somewhat less than medium-high. It's creamy and juicy. Carbonation and astringency are low.
Overall, it's inoffensive without being dull. It's easy to drink for a DIPA.

Yields an amber color with a bigger, froth white head.

Smells of fresh cut limes, ripe oranges and lighter, tropical pineapple among well pronounced toffee and whole grain bread.

Drinks easy and refreshing with a short alcohol glimpse on the back end, which gets washed away by a lively, mineralic carbonation.

Tastes of sweet caramel, lighter, bakers chocolate accompanied by toffee and bitter lime zest. Develops a fruitier middle part, with a note of oranges and papaya cutting through, adding some depth to the prominent, sweet malt backbone in this. Finishes surprisingly creamy, soothing the palate by making all flavors a little more accessible on their own, while establishing a well working blend at the same time.

I don’t think the higher abv makes this better than regular Torpedo. It doesn‘t really add much to the flavors despite a more pronounced sweetness and a short, yet noteable alcoholic note.

I would have liked it to be a bit more piney. That said, this is a pretty good beer.

Poured from a can into a tulip glass. Orangish golden yellow color with foamy white head and nice curtain lacing. Citrus and pine smell and taste. Sweet tangerine and vanilla. Very nice full smooth feel. I would like to try it fresh from tap.

19.2 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 5/19/2022. Pours slightly hazy deep golden amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense and rocky off white head with great retention. Great spotty soapy lacing and moderate streaming carbonation on the glass. Aromas and flavors of huge red grapefruit, orange, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, honeydew melon, guava, berries, citrus peel/rind, wood, pepper, pine, honey, cracker, toast, herbal, floral, grass. Good size, pine, citrus rind, herbal, woody, spicy bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; balanced creamy/bready malt and sticky/resinous hop mouthfeel. Long lingering resin drying finish, with mild astringency. Aggressive for the ABV. Mild increasing warmth of 8.2% after the finish. Amazing Cascade, Centennial, Mosaic profile. Very dank, earthy, and juicy hops with a nice sized malt backbone. This is really everything I'd envision as a modernized version of Torpedo if it was first made in 2021, but they made it an imperial. I will definitely buy again. I always love Centennial and Mosaic.

Poured from 19.2oz can into a dimpled mug. Canned 6/30/22.

Appearance: rich orange hue with maybe the tiniest hint of haze and a thick finger of frothy ivory foam. Color is beautiful and head retention ain't bad.

Smell: malty and quite sweet with a hop aroma that to me is noble, grassy, and earthy. Kind of on the subtle side for the style.

Taste: sweet malt and a big dose of piney, earthy, herbal, grassy hops, along with a bitterness that, while somewhat strong, is not quite enough to compete with the sweetness.

Mouthfeel: medium-rich body with a good level of carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: this beer looks and feels good, but the overall sweetness is too high for me and the character of the hops is not particularly complex or original.

Pours a clear bright orange, nice sudsy head with some lacing. Boogar machine says, caramel malts, some pine and a bit of citrus. Taste buds agree. I was pleasantly by this, I see hazy/juicy/NEIPA I figure I won't care for it, regular Torpedo is a favorite of mine. IMHO this won't replace Torpedo, it's pretty good but I wont buy it again.

Clear amber body; sparse carbonation yet thick, sticky, white head. Malty, spicy nose. Big malt backbone taste with a zesty, spicy hop presence; light alcohol note; earthy sweetness; moderate hop bitterness. Heavy body; mildly coarse on the palate; some alcohol heat.

This is another beer that is probably past its prime. It's not really juicy at this stage, but still is tasty enough and has some great eye appeal. It does ooze double IPA character.
