California, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.60%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Our Brewers selected the finest, most flavorful hops, pushed them beyond their limits and forged them into this all-new triple IPA. This reimagined Hoptimum is our hoppiest beer yet, providing a blend of tropical and citrus hop aroma that delivers a refined yet aggressive character.

Bittering hops: Simcoe
Finishing hops: Citra, Chinook, Simcoe.

Raul heard nothing but good things about Hoptimum; but unfortunately, like Kiera Knightly in general, Raul is just a bit let down. Raul is into the ultra hop presence, but woo doggy is this son of a mischievous woman bitter! And Raul means, bitter! Raul himself would like to see more juice, or a solid malt backbone to even this sucker out. The bitterness just kind of kills Raul's palate like Del Taco after midnight.

Pours a clear amber color with a finger width foamy head. Head retention and lacing are decent. Has a nice resinous, slightly citrus and caramel aroma. Bready with a nice piney burst, follow by the smoothest caramel taste I have ever had. Almost like syrup going down. Somewhat astringent aftertaste but not too much. Very good beer.

grapefruit rind, pine, herbs and tropical fruit, nose not as pleasing as you would think
Magnum, Chinook, Simcoe hops
on the bitter side....their stainless steel torpedo does not subdue the bitterness. more than the 100 IBU's they claim
alcohol well hidden; ranges from 10-12% by batch
try Rogue's Double Dead Guy for a toned down version of this searing beer. not for wimps
draft version is still over the top
