California, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.60%

Notes / Commercial Description:
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Our Brewers selected the finest, most flavorful hops, pushed them beyond their limits and forged them into this all-new triple IPA. This reimagined Hoptimum is our hoppiest beer yet, providing a blend of tropical and citrus hop aroma that delivers a refined yet aggressive character.

Bittering hops: Simcoe
Finishing hops: Citra, Chinook, Simcoe.

Picked up a 4-pack of this in Totowa before the rest of it flew off of the shelf. I've had so many beers from Sierra Nevada that I thought this would be like them but amazingly, it wasn't. The oily mouthfeel is here but the hops are much more earthy and less sharp than in other West Coast IPA's, Combined with a recessed alcoholic feel, this was a beer that was full without feeling terribly strong and overpowering.

Loved the pour to this as the apricot hue had a subtle radiance unlike anything I've ever seen due to the slight cloudiness, oily consistency of the beer, and small but long-lasting head that lingered on as light rings of lacing. The aroma wasn't terribly strong but it was that of pine, earth, resin, booze, and a very slight metallic bitterness that undercut everything else. Lots of body here - caramel and sweet malt (nearly Crystalline) that balanced out the hops nicely with just a hint of stickiness in the aftertaste and with the carbonation being one stream of bubbles rising to the top, there wasn't a lot to scrub everything away here after each sip.

Make no mistake - this beer is strong even though it will take most of the bottle before you realize it. The alcohol can be felt but it never seems like something that's over 10% ABV. This almost had the feel of a ESB that was squared and had I not seen the label, I wouldn't have immediately guess that this was a Sierra Nevada offering. Absolutely wonderful stuff from one of my favorite brewers and worth finding, even it should be available 6 at a time.

A. It has a caramel color to it, with a very limited head--if any at all-an no lacing. Medium amount of bubbles coming up throughout. Hazy but light shines through.

S. Very hoppy and grassy scent.

T/M. Very, very grassy IPA. The hops are full and robust. Torpedo like, but extra hoppy. There are some caramel flavors there that provide some sweetness, but it gets drowned out by the hops. Full bodied and heavy. Quite carbonated.

O. This is a lovely IPA, but you have to want to down a very hoppy beer.

bottle into tulip

A-honey-amber color, transparent. Thin white head, quickly dissipates
S-hops, honey, apricot, citrus
T-Boozy, hops, sweet malt, lingering bitter finish
M-full, round, resinous, sticky oily.

O-will try again, but much prefer Stone Ruination/others.
