Notes / Commercial Description:
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Our Brewers selected the finest, most flavorful hops, pushed them beyond their limits and forged them into this all-new triple IPA. This reimagined Hoptimum is our hoppiest beer yet, providing a blend of tropical and citrus hop aroma that delivers a refined yet aggressive character.

Bittering hops: Simcoe
Finishing hops: Citra, Chinook, Simcoe.

Smells of citrus and grapefruit. Attractive light copper color with an okay head, nothing special. Great lacing though. Very hoppy. Bitterness is strong but doesn’t linger and isn’t the overwhelming sensation. That distinction goes to the powerful flavor of the hops. For 10.4%,the alcohol is well-hidden, but it’s not completely absent.

Overall: This beer definitely satisfies the hop craving I have found myself having more and more often lately. It is a strong burst of hops from the first sip. As the glass progresses, it becomes a little more boozy. The bitterness level is appropriate for the level of hop flavor and the ABV. I would buy this again, for sure.

Purchased as a recommendation from a friend of mine. Pours a nice golden-yellow color with a super fat, bright white head - don't pour this one too quick or aggressively, the head will tower up and over the glass. The lacing is magnificent, almost majestic, leaving a new ring every time you take a sip from the glass.

The aroma escapes as soon as you crack the beer open. Heavy, heavy, heavy hops, up and down. Pines through and through, insane hop oils, mildly dank and extremely resinous. Deeper inhales bring to light the balance of sweet citrus that goes hand in hand with the hops; grapefruits, orange, and lemon zest come to mind. Hugely aromatic and perfume-like. Some spices are present and even the alcohol is noticeable upon sniffing.

Then you taste it. BOOM. MF'ing hop explosion on your palate. Hops hit long and deep on all surfaces of the tongue and the mouth. Heavy pines, dense resin, thick and viscous hop oil flavors run amok. Immediately after, it starts to sweeten up with the grapefruits and citrus flavors coming alive. Maybe even some tangerines and pineapples. All of a sudden, you are thrust back into the clutches of the hops. Floral notes are rampant; like throwing a pine tree and a bouquet of roses into a blender and taking a swig. Malts aren't very present until the final moments of the sip; upon swallowing, your mouth is left with a yeast-like coating of flavors, biscuits and bread-like in character. But the bitterness doesn't go away - it stays and lingers and far outlasts the malt. It leaves your mouth dying for another dose of hop explosion. A warm alcholic presence from start to finish will scare away any newcomers and light lager lovers - this beer is for seriously heavy beer drinks only. Thick, sticky, heavy body and a tight, medium-level carbonation on this one.

Hoptimum is a must have for anybody who loves hoppy, bitter, and floral beers. Its main criticism is that the citrus and tiny malt backbone do not balance out the hops well. Well, it's true to a certain degree. The hops are heavy in this one. VERY heavy. But sometimes, that's what you're looking for. This beer must be sipped and cared for tenderly. It will stretch your taste buds to the extreme, and then throw them from the cliff. If you're looking for a hop bomb, look no further.

Pours a hazy amber orange color with a big 2 finger foamy beige head that was full of tight little bubbles and faded slowly, leaving great foamy lacing sticking all over the glass and rings as it went down. I thought that it would fade slower, but it was still a very good looking beer.

WOW, smells like hops; all kinds of hops: fresh hops, wet hops, dry hops, juicy hops. The nose is a mix of mango, piney hops, grapefruit, citrus shops, pineapple, tangerine, floral hops, herbs, pepper and other light spices; it’s amazing that the hops all kind of negate each other but still all add something at the same time and completely hide the high ABV. Best way to describe this is fresh smelling hops mixed with citrus fruit.

Tastes like big juicy wet hops, oozing with citrus hops, piney hops and herbal notes; the flavor starts off with grapefruit, pineapple, tangerine, lemon zest, sharp citrus notes that are bitter and then lead to a sweet mix of floral hops, herbs, pepper, piney hops, grains, sweet malt, wheat bread, caramel, brown sugar, what seems like roasted yeast and other light spices like coriander and pepper; the oily hops fade and allow the malt to steer you back before the alcohol warmth rushes over like a wave of flavor and then smacks you with some piney notes. The alcohol shows itself, but seems to get lost in the dynamic hop assault that keeps coming; wave after wave of hops just keep crashing on your palate and providing a massive array of complexities that works just about perfectly. Sierra Nevada pioneered using hops in this way and shows it’s mastery in this brew.

Mouthfeel was very smooth with light carbonation, a medium chewy body that was almost thick and viscous, alcohol warmth and a bitter finish that was sweet and hoppy. Malts were accents in this beer, which was hop napalm…textbook DIPA, this was full of very complex hop flavor, had some real punch to it and yet went down easy considering how aggressive this beer is.

This is a hopheads dream and a macro-fans nightmare. This was outstanding, I wish I could get it more here in NY because I would; it is a lot of fun to sip and savor. I highly recommend this beer, which was very tasty and keeps the ABV in check and it flows down.

5/8/14-Had this again (bottled 4/11/14) and it was very fresh smelling, full of juicy hops in the nose and just oozing hop oils in the flavor. It was even better this time since it was very fresh.

5/23/15-Scored a 4 pack of this and drank them all last night. Bottled 4/1/2015 and the freshness showed as the hops were dank and juicy and completely hid the ABV. Great batch this year that was smooth and complimented my dinner well. Overall score and feel going up as a result of it being so damn easy to drink last night.
