Poured from a 750ml caged & corked bottle into a large snifter glass. Since Sierra Nevada Brewing’s 30th anniversary was in 2010, this beer is about 7-years-old.

A: The beer is a very deep dark brown color with a short light brown head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, molasses and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of chocolate, coffee and molasses. Then a hearty roasted malt character comes in. The hops presence is very mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and a little crisp, medium-to-heavy body, light carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a solid stout to drink for a while.

A shared beer. Should have taken more tasting notes. Aged well with little to no oxidation. Smooth and not overly roasted at all. Mellow and delicious with a slightly full mouth feel. Highly enjoyable.

pours a light chocolate color with a light tan head with a slight lacing. toffee, caramel, molasses, coffee on the nose. Upon tasting, you get a malty taste, then caramel, molasses and coffee. Light carbonation. Wanted more from this brew.

Poured into my Stone RIS glass at 50 degrees. The beer has a two finger medium tan head with decent retention. The color of the beer is dark and murky. Some carbonation bubble are visible on the side of the glass.

Sticky toffee aroma, caramel, chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, bread yeast, citrus, and some floral,

Caramel, dark roasted malts, bread, chocolate coffee, bready, yeasty, perfume, grassy, and some toffee.

The mouthfeel is creamy, slightly carbonated, and finish last.

This beer is good the age on it made it nice. The nose was so promising, the taste was a bit of a let down. good imperial stout nonetheless.

For a 5 year old non barrel aged stout this has held up very well. A nose filled with roasted malts and dark fruit accompanied by a slightly viscous body. Toffee, dark fruits, some tobacco, malts upon malts and charred chocolate roll over your tongue to flavor town. Impressed again that this held up so well, a very complex stout. Cheers to Ken & Fritz.

A: dark chocolate color, finger thick tan foamy head, thick sticky lacing
S: waited a bit to warm up.....aromas of dark chocolate, caramel, molasses, and roasted coffee.
T: very malt forward, caramel, dark chocolate, molasses, raisin, and toffee, well balanced with slight bitter finish to creamy, buttery lingering. Alcohol is not overpresent, well balanced with the malt and hop.
M: full bodied mouthfeel light carbonation
O: An outstanding stout. One of my all time favorites.

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 2/20/2010. Pours dense pitch black color with a 2 finger dense dark tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, molasses, toast, dark bread, tobacco, char, smoke, licorice, raisin, plum, and roasted earthiness. Incredible aromas with fantastic complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and light-moderate dark fruit notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, molasses, toast, dark bread, tobacco, char, smoke, licorice, raisin, plum, and roasted earthiness. Good amount of roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, molasses, toast, dark bread, char, smoke, licorice, raisin, plum, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and balance of big dark/roasted malt and light-moderate dark fruit flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and very full bodied; with a very creamy, smooth, and fairly slick/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an absolutely incredible imperial stout at 4.5 years old. All around fantastic complexity and balance of big dark/roasted malt and light-moderate dark fruit flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. An insanely delicious offering.

Poured this 750 mL brown bottle into a New Belgium globe. The body was opaque black/brown. The head was dense, tan in color, and stayed throughout the drink.

The smell was cocoa powder and damp fresh grain.

The taste was of overripe stone fruit. A nice char met the mild alcohol. Deeply fruity with hints of metal. Creamy coffee and cocoa. Bright rich grains shine through. The char bitterness lasted a long time in the finish. However, there was a sweet residue on my lips after each sip.

The body was smooth and rich. Medium to mild carbonation.

Inky black in color with good amount of light brown head and a thick collar. Aroma is very roasty, some dark sugar, some black currant, great earthiness. Thick body, silty mouthfeel and low carbonation. Taste is charred, deep earth, great use of roasted malt like all SN stouts, some coffee and mahogany-like wood.

A - Pours a brown-motor oil black with a fine dark tan head that just sits there.

S - Very roasted, smokey, chocolate.

T - Chocolate fudge, roasted malt, very nice.

D - Lower, but enough carbonation with a heavy body.

O - Fudge and roasted, so nice and warming. This has held up nicely.

750 ML bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary Snifter (intentionally of course). Liquid comes out dark brown and black. Starts dark brown but darkens more and more as the stout rises up in the glass and becomes mostly black. Dark brown highlights on the edges and bottom of the glass. The liquid itself has a nice syrupy effect to it and each sip leave some nice coating to it. Darker than tan corrode head with various sized bubbles, per usual most of the big bubbles go away and the smaller ones stick around for quite awhile. Not crazy, but there's better than average lacing to it.

Smell is quite good and contains aromas of plenty of roasted malts, even over roasted and slightly charred. There are hints of chocolate, medium roasted black coffee beans, burned caramel, and some hints of licorice/anise and a slight touch of alcohol (well more of a tickle from the alcohol), has some similarities of a dark fruit liquor. Really good balance.

The flavor is a slight step up from the aroma, a little stronger. Equal amounts of both bitter and sweet dark chocolate. There's more of the dark dehydrated fruit (fig, plum, raison, ect.) than in the smell. Some medium roasted coffee beans, a charred mix of sugar, brown sugar, caramel and maybe some toffee that lingers towards the end. All in all everything here is a really nice blend.

Mouthfeel is good, probably the heavier end of medium body in my opinion, flavor lingers but not too long based on the style. Very smooth, with a nice not too sharp yet dry finish at the end. Drinkability is on point, this is one that can be consumed by a single beer lover by themselves without an issue. I expected this to be a slow sipper (which is what I'd recommend), but this one drinks pretty quick. Like this beer a lot, aged for 3+ years and it's still really good, wouldn't hate to see this one out again.

Black. Very little head.

Roasted malts, dark chocolate, some prune/raisin, spiced alcohol.

A little caramel sweetness up front quickly fades into bitter chocolate and espresso.

Solid in the mouth, low carbonation, rich and luxurious. Smooth finish, alcohol is barely perceived.

Well done, wish I had more.

I bought this bottle a while back, so this is aged 2.5 years I guess. Served in a plastic cup.

A - Tan foam slowly settles to a thin cap, collar, and some mild lacing. Very dark brown body.

S - Baker's chocolate, touch of umami, roasted malts, hints of char and anise. This has held up quite well; I don't remember much difference in flavor profile from when I had it fresh, but quickly consulting early reviews I glanced at.

T - The taste is quite a bit sweeter, with notes of caramel, milk chocolate and more peripheral roasted malts and char. Mild espresso bitterness that lingers into the finish. No obvious alcohol, and perhaps a bit of sweet oxidation creeping in.

M - Medium-full body, roasty texture, with some mild lingering stickiness on the palate. Lower carbonation, and again no obvious alcohol warmth.

D - A solid, well-crafted beer, as is usual from Sierra Nevada. This has aged quite well and I imagine a barrel-aged version would be quite delicious; does such a thing exist? In any case, the beer is good enough to warrant a re-brew. Shared this with a few friends and it went down super easy.

750ml bottle: This one pours an inky, opaque dark brown color. There was quite a large dark tan head on it. Some lacing. The aroma is very nice. Chocolate, but not sweet. Some earthy and piney hops. Getting a hint of raisins also. The taste is quite good. Nice balance of a touch of sweetness and a touch of bitterness. Notes of chocolate, raisin, roasted malts, pine and earthy hops. A lot going on in this one. An excellent beer!

750ml bottle poured into a large snifter. This bottle has been cellared for 2 or 3 years now.

A: Deep black pour with a sandy colored head. Retention is good, and a quarter inch of head always remains atop the beer. Lacing wraps a jagged, broken ring around the glass and dots it with medium sized spots.

S: Bakers chocolate and black cocoa. Unsweetened cocoa. Earthy and piney hops have mellowed with time. Booze soaked raisins and berries. Jab of alcohol. Age has made the nose mellow and seamless.

T: Chocolate fudge sauce is the initial taste sensation. This quickly dries into bitter and unsweetened chocolate flavors. Woody and acrid tastes from the more heavily roasted malts have been smoothed over with time. Earthy and piney hops received the same treatment. Brief flashes of raisin and red berries. Perhaps a suggestion of vanilla bean. Whisper of alcohol. Dry finish of earthy hops and unsweetened cocoa.

M: Thick in body. Full and creamy with a mild sense of viscosity. Weighty, as it should be.Low carbonation. Very smooth and silky.

O: Another beer I am glad I hung onto for as long as I did. This was great fresh, but time has really helped to take the edge off of the hops and the more acrid roasted malt flavors. These harsher flavor profiles have mellowed and melded into the rest of the beer, and it now drinks that much more easily. This is what makes cellaring worthwhile.

750 ml bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada tulip.
9.2% ABV,

A - Pouring completely black, this stout forms a dense mocha-colored head that drapes the glass in lacing as it cascades down to a thick skim of bubbles.

S - Clearly aged, this beer has a slight musty, wet cardboard twang to it which interferes with the voluptuous malt profile at first but the rich chocolaty aroma wins out with both milk and dark nuances. Lactose sweetness balances notes of molasses while caramel finishes out for a thick and rich aroma and notes of charred oak.

T - The first few sips suggest milk chocolate and sweetness with underlying caramel notes, but out of nowhere, it's like getting past the shell, biting into a chocolate covered espresso bean. Holy coffee! Bold, black coffee abounds with molasses bitterness and sticky consistency while maduro cigar tobacco finishes out beautifully with woody undertones.

M - The beer's rich and creamy mouthfeel introduces itself briefly before introducing cold, dry bitterness of roasted chocolate malt and coffee bean. Full-bodied and smooth, this beer has wonderful balance of sweetness and lingering bitterness.

O - Somewhat scary at first, the beer exhibited some oxidation in the aroma but the beer's powerful malt profile overcame and has done a wonderful job of developing into a (differently) rich and flavorful stout that marries chocolate and coffee together wonderfully!

Bottle from around early 2010, when this was released. Bought at a time when I was buying way more beer than I could drink, and finally digging deep into that old stash. Tasted 5 October 2013.

Pours deep coffee brown coming out of the bottle, and thinner than I'd expect, but opaque black in the glass. Big two-finger medium-tan head. Excellent retention and lacing. Despite the light pour, it's really nice.

Smell is heavy on the chocolate, rich and fairly sweet. It's right in the middle of the sweet-to-roasted spectrum, with both powerful milk chocolate sweetness and some slightly bitter dark roast. Quite nice.

Taste is big and rich, with a strong roasted bitterness. Not quite charred, but close. The sweetness is there, but it's definitely outdone by those dark, woody, coffee notes.

Feel is a little light for an imperial stout, but otherwise solid. Carbonation is medium-low, which is fine. Just a bit thin.

A solid stout. Not overpoweringly sweet or over-roasted, and that makes me happy. Nothing special about it, but very well balanced.

Found this at a bar a few weeks ago for $13. Drank last night and reviewed from notes.

A - Pours a viscous, motor oil-like pitch black with an initial 3 finger mocha colored head that recedes fairly quickly and leaves a good amount of lace for a 9.5% stout.

S - A huge roasty character jumps out at me first, but underneath lies semi-sweet chocolate, brown sugar, a kind of earthy pumpernickel bread, and surprisingly some slight solvent alcohol. Wouldn't have expected any booze after 3 years, but its slight and doesn't detract from the beer.

T - Again, big roasted malts and bitter bakers chocolate up front, followed by a melange of flavored middle of the mouth; molasses, brown sugar, slight char, milk chocolate sweetness. Really balanced, no one flavor steals the show, they all come together quite nicely. Age has done this beer good. Finishes with a mix of bitter roast and a chocolate syrup sweetness. Slight warming alcohol in the back of the throat. Very nice.

M - Quite thick and chewy with a fittingly low amount of carbonation. Coats the mouth with flavors.

O - This was a very good brew when it was originally released, and while I don't think the age has quite pushed it into greatness, it's close. Yeah, there are better stouts out there, but this was a thoroughly enjoyable sipper. The balance of flavors in particular was pretty impressive.

Wow!! I hope they brew this again! Pours thick and black with a toasted oak head. Smells awesome; figgy dark fruit, rich chocolate, dark rye. The mouth feel is incredible, it rolls smoothly leaving behind layers and layers of biscutty, bready malts. Chocolate, caramel and bitter rye; there's a depth of flavor and heavy body which makes me wish I'd bought a case!

This beer is great. 95% of ISs have something not quite balanced: too sweet, too bitter, not bitter enough, too roasty, etc. This thing is thick, really well balanced, not cloying, very complex. I would have figured the booziness wouldn't have been so pronounced since it's been cellared for a couple of years, but it helps keep the beer ethereal. Man, I really wish I had bought a few more of these. I also didn't have it fresh, so I don't know if it got better or worse. Really great beer.

Can't believe I held onto this one so long! The last of my 4 30th Anniversary beers. Poured from a corked and caged bottle into a pint glass. Big light tan head with excellent retention. Dense brown color with only a tiny bit of light at the bottom of the glass. Thick film of tan lacing down the opposite side of the glass from where I tilted it up. A good looking beer.

Nice aroma of toasted malts and a little vinuous (port wine) flavor. Taste is pretty similar, but there is an element of semi sweet chocolate that is missing in the nose. Really flavorful. The aging probably helped.

Mouthfeel is rich and creamy. There is a warming alcohol effect but no alcohol bite (probably because of the aging).

This is a great beer. I drank the whole bottle myelf and enjoued every sip.

On tap at the Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY. A holdover from their SN tap takeover, and a great find.

Pours dark, dark black, inky, and velvety-looking. Nice head, maybe an inch, brown color, mocha. Smells roasty and chocolaty.

Very roasty, bitter flavor, bit of smokiness, possibly peat-like, intense dark chocolate. So creamy and bitter at the same time.

Full body, low carbonation.

Awesome find, but sad I'll probably never have it again.

A- pours black with a one finger dark brown head. The head is solid and sticks around for a decent bit of time, gorgeous looking beer

S- getting some light char, modest chocolate, solid roast. Not bad, just not overly pronounced

T- nice mix of both sweet and bitter chocolate coming through, with some solid roast and slight char. No heat or booze at all. Overall, pretty tame, but solid

M- pretty big body, very thick. Loving it

O- really solid imperial stout. Doesn't kick you in the face with huge flavors, but just very well-balanced and nice to drink

Poured at 55 degrees F into an oversized snifter. Aged roughly 5 years, as this was a limited, one time, release.

Pours an opaque black color with a khaki colored head that dissipates slowly. Decent head retention, and beautiful lacing all around the glass. Color is like an onyx black...seems to stretch beyond the SRM scale. Smells of roasted barley, caramel and crystal malts, with a slight hint of coffee bean. Amazing nose overall! Tastes of divine roastiness, with a touch of bitterness from the hop balance. Flavor is pretty awesome, and the beer has mellowed out after 5 years of aging. Definitely more malt forward, but you still have a nice bitter finish. Feels slightly prickly on the tongue with a slickness on the finish.
