Poured from a bottle into a Duvel tulip. The beer pours out slightly hazy with an appetizing amber-orange color, only a finger's worth of foam, and very little effervescence. The beer smells of flowers, wheat, and candied fruit. Moderate hop character, but definitely fruity esters present.

The beer has a lot of body for a Saison and a surprisingly oily feel. Lots of sweetness on the palate with a good earthy spiciness to go with it. Up front I get lemon and orange marmalade. A good hit of spicy phenols accompany it at mid-palate, killing any medicinal sweetness that might exist. It finishes dry, but all the flavors seem to linger a little. Nothing dominates.

Not as spicy or earthy as some other Saisons I've had, but the style does allow a lot of room for interpretation and the flavor is undeniably pleasant. It has some nice complexity and a good balance between sweet and spicy. Really nice, but it could use more carbonation.

A - Dark amber, almost a cross between a pale and a red, nearly opaque. Thick with bubbles. Perfect 1 1/2 finger head, creamy, with excellent retention. Lacing blankets the side of the glass.

S - Dry, rye wheat; only the slightest hints of Belgian yeast and perhaps Mandarin orange. An understated aroma that gains slightly in complexity as it sits.

T - A much smoother taste that the aroma indicated. Sweet, but not hugely; a complex mix of sweet malt flavors, with just a hint of sourness. That dry rye or wheat flavor is definitely present, but on the mid-tongue, and it's a nice complement, instead of an overwhelming presence. Very satisfying taste.

M - Light-to-medium body, medium foaming, no sting. There's no alcohol flavor, but there is a definite warming effect if you allow the beer to sit in your mouth.

O - I was surprised by the mix of experiences provided in this beer. It's not as sweet as many Saisons aim, but it's definitely sweet. On the other hand, a wheaty, rye, straw-like farm ale quality is there, but not dominating. It's very well-balanced, blending all of these together into a very drinkable ale.

Poured into a Duvel tulip.
