A- Pours near pitch black with a thick and foamy tan head into my Ithaca Excelcior tulip. Thick spider web lacing clings to the side of the glass. A decent amount of carbonation that settles down fairly quickly.

S- Dark roasted espresso with whipped cream. Notes of mild chocolate, caramel, dried cherries, fresh cut figs, and smoked malt. Not the most depth and lasting impressions, but very nice none the less. Little whiffs of alcohol hide nicely beneath.

T- Its a perfect match to the nose... dark coffee, dried fruit, caramel and chocolate. Roasty and fruity up front, and nice and dry on the back end. Just a subtle hint of the alcohol buried under all that roasty, toasty malt!

M- Thick and chewy like an oatmeal stout should be! Has a nice dryness on the finish. The alcohol is pleasantly present, but it mixes really well with the cocoa, coffee and dark fruit. Has a subtle sweetness lying beneath it all.

O- Nothing ground breaking about this stout, just very well done and delicious! Nice coffee, cocoa, and dried fruit. They should release this all on it's own.

Sierra Nevada calls it an Oatmeal, BA calls it an Imperial -- since Oatmeal Stout sort of limits out at 5.9%, I have to wonder how smooth and/or silky this beer is. Let's see how it falls together.

A -- Inky, opaque black -- couldn't get light to shine thru with a Mag-Lite. Thick, creamy, long-lasting brown head (here come the roasted malts).

S -- Roasted malt, cocoa, light citrus, and peppery alcohol -- all pretty mellow.

T -- A balance of roasted malts, fruit esters, and peppery alcohol up front. The finish starts showing a blend of roasted malts and some cocoa flavors ending in mildly hot alcohol. The alcohol and some hop bitterness follow into the aftertaste in a blend that makes this great for cold nights.

M -- Full bodied and chewy, smooth warmth from alcohol. Rather silky, considering the big roasted malt and alcohol character. Some lingering syrupiness in after a swallow. Dry finish.

O -- It's certainly a good Imperial, and the smooth silkiness of oatmeal in the mix fights through a little, but make no mistake -- this is no Oatmeal Stout you've probably ever tried before. Expect Imperial Stout with some lightly smooth mouthfeel from the oats. The nose and flavor are all Imperial in character - I vote BA's interpretation of this.
