Style: Rye Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.60%

Availability: Spring

Notes / Commercial Description:
Rugged and resilient, rye has been a staple grain for ages and its spicy black pepper-like flavor has been prized by distillers and brewers for centuries. Rye thrives in the harshest conditions and comes to life in Ruthless, a rugged IPA with fruity, citrus and herbal hop notes countered by the dry spiciness of the rye. Holding a steadfast balance between contrasting malt and hop character, Ruthless is bold enough to inspire even the most brazen hop head to bear down and embrace the flavor.

Reddish brown color, balanced nose with smooth kentucky rye and soft tropical hops. Taste is balanced but maybe too much of a fence straddler - rye is there but not as muscular as I personally like, hops are also a bit muddled, mostly tropical with medium bitterness...still a very good beer and no real flaws in it

I'm not sure why, but Ruthless Rye is exactly what I envision visually for a proper rye ale. Its deep amber color bordering walnut brown, its crystal clarity, its khaki pillow on top. It looks smooth and clean, then rugged and burly thanks to its rediculously sticky rings of lace, but overall, picturesque of the fall season.

The aroma ain't too shabby either. Classic IPA pine met with raw earth and subtle spice. Peppercorns and brown bread lay the foundation deep underneath.

The flavor is so unique, it's difficult to describe. Like a spicy IPA meets a brown ale. Pepper, bread, a heavy dollop of pine on the end. Brown sugar and clove weave in and out along with a dried seasoning herb blend.

This has a stickiness to it yet it's relatively dry thanks to an elevated carbonation. Bitter as hell too, which I personally love. A little bit of grit to it. Probably not something for the masses, but suits me just right.

As a Rye IPA, it doesn't get much better than this. Not exactly your Roggenbier if that's what you're looking for, but this definitely feels much more rye forward than most rye beers. Cheers.

Appearance - Pours deep brown color with big fluffy tan head. Spotty lacing all around the glass.

Aroma - Floral hops, spicy rye, touch of malt, little sweet caramel.

Taste - Taste is really balanced, getting some malt and a little floral hops up front. Sweet caramel and peppery rye and then bitter citrus rind on the finish.

Feel - Medium bodied, well carbonated, touch of dryness on the finish.

Overall - Not always a fan of rye IPAs but this one has nice flavors and is really well balanced.

Pours a dark reddish-brown color with a thick, white head. The smell is malty with a little spicy-rye note and a hint of floral hops. Taste is a little sweet at first followed quickly by spicy rye and hop bitterness with enough of the malt backbone mixing in to make it nicely balanced. Spicy aftertaste. Nice, dry finish. Easy drinker with plenty of character, I'd happily buy it again.

I procured this from a Sierra Nevada fall pack & it is really good. It pours a very dark amber color, almost brown with a beige foam head that starts at about one finger and remained capped throughout the entire bottle. There is a small amount of stubborn lacing on the glass. The nose is somewhat malty & peppery with a faint floral hop aroma as well. The taste that followed was exactly as the news was...malty pepper with small amount of floral hops....very refreshing. Even though the ABV is only 6.6%, it does have a faint alcohol burn as well. It coats the palate well, actually better than some Porters and Stouts that I have had, and stayed with me for a while. Overall, excellent brew that I can guarantee I will have again.

12-oz. bottle poured lightly into a 16-oz. mug produces a fat finger sized slightly off-white head with long retention and thick lacing. A cap is present throughout the drink.
Clear dark amber, appears light copper in front of light.
Peppery smell from the rye for the nose plus grainy malt with faint herbal hops.
Taste is semi-sweet at first, the rye plus bitter hops controls the middle with a clean dry finish and a peppery after taste-I think it’s a mix of alcohol and rye.
Light to medium body with average carbonation, a slightly grainy bite at the end.
This is my favorite from the Sierra Nevada Fall Pack, easy drinker for the ABV, light and refreshing while grilling burgers and chicken on a hot day.
I believe this was an IPA before the resent style changes. This has me interested in trying more Rye Beers.

Pours an opaque, maroon with a thin, creamy white head.
Smells of wonderful combination of rye and citrus hop.
Great rye presence that balances well with red malts and hop. Good peppery spice. Bitterness resinates.

A: crystal clear; amber in color; 2 finger light beige head that receded to a thin cap; OK lacing;

S: grain and a little rye spice;

T: malt and spice from start to finish; moderate bitterness at the end;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; lightly dry finish;

O: not as good as I remember; other than bitterness, there was no hop character;

Rye comes out in the aroma pretty well. The taste of rye, however, it isn’t as noticeable. Otherwise a solid IPA. Crisp, dry finish.
