Poured into a tulip, copper, dark amber color. Fluffy cream head.
Taste is mildly to medium centennial, citrus hops notes. They use whole cone hops so on some sips it does have some bite but mostly mild. Bold and spicy rye flavor with a boost of hops and dry finish.
It's a perfect beer for the month of November, March, and April during a thunderstorm or bitter cold day, thus ruthless rye drink it when there's a storm.

One of my go to's. From the best and one of the first truly great craft breweries. Sierra Nevada never fails especially when it comes to getting the best hop flavor. This beer looks beautiful and tastes even better. If you were skeptical about this one, don't be. This is a truly wonderful IPA from a brewery that knows what they're doing.

Pours a rudy crisp brown with a thin tan head that dissipated somewhat but left lots of lacing and a thin tan film on the beer.

Smell has some aromas of orange, peach and mango with an undertone of spicy rye and pepper. The rye and malts become more pronounced as the beer warms.

Taste has notes of orange, mango, and a fruit like character initially giving way to a strong malt flavor with lots of spicy rye notes. As the beer warms the malts and rye become more pronounced. Overall the spicy pepper and rye notes tend to overpower the hops. I would have appreciated a bit more balance.

Feel had medium carbonation, but heavy, sort of sweet.

Overall a solid rye IPA. The balance skewed towards the malts/rye flavors at the expense of the hop, but it was still a decent tasting brew.

L: 12 oz bottle (from 4 Way IPA pack) poured into standard pint glass. Thick pillowy, off-white head with impressive longevity and thick lacing. Color is a brilliantly clear copper. Looks delicious.

S: Hops are clean earth and citrus peel, with toasted malts and a little kick of rye spiciness.

T: Very focused on the rye spice, with earthy hops making a brief appearance.

F: Feels "big" without too much body. The rye packs a punch, and there is a touch of alcohol warmth as the beer approaches room temperature.

O: A very malt centered IPA, but still crisp and clean. One of the most rye-focused rye IPAs I've experienced.

Grabbed the mixer pack on a whim, and I'm glad I did. Nice copper color, excellent use of malts, the rye spice is perfectly balanced. Could have been meatier and I didn't love the head.

Bright, clean, copper penny color with a 1/3" off white head on top. Falls to a 1/4" and retention there is great. Thick lacing left behind.
Sweet malt, light orange peel/orange candy.
Medium to full body, low to mid carbonation.
Malt driven, spiciness comes thru mid to late, bittering hops are intense and linger on with the spiciness of the malt.
Really good, part of a variety 12pk -- I would buy it on it's own.

Clear rust/copper color. Citrusy hops and sweet rye. Sweet and rye upfront, earthy hops, citrus hops, pithy grapefruit finish that lingers in the aftertaste.

Appearance: copper body with big frothy beige head, long lasting, decent lacing; lightly effervescent

Smell: sweet malts dominated by hops; some pine, mostly citrus

Taste: creamy, sweet malts well balanced by hops; good peppery spice from the rye; decent beer overall

Mouthfeel: creamy throughout

Remarks: drinking it while homebrewing. Relax, don't worry, have a commercial brew.

Copper color, maybe reddish copper; head minimal and off white. Nose, a balanced hops blend, calm floral notes over some toasty maltiness. Taste: this is nicely balanced between hops and malts. Grows smoothly; the multiple malts and hops involved are so nicely balanced. Mouthfeel quite creamy for the style, also grows and subsides smoothly. For an IPA with the word "ruthless" in the name, this is so smooth & balanced. The hops are obvious yet somehow are never overwhelming. Given that the rye is significant to the identity of this beer, its unique aspects are nicely blended with the other ingredients & flavors. Well done.

Bottle poured into a nonic glass.

Mahogany clear body with fluffy off-white head, fine carbonation. Smell is robust spice, citrus, pine. Taste is bitter, powerful pepper and equal parts orange rind and pine. The rye is apparent, taking on a rye whiskey-like intensity, emboldened by the bitterness of the hops. Body is medium-full.
Ruthless is the very limit of how I would describe this. It was intense, but only slightly more than others in the rye category. Furthermore, for all its intensity, it failed to deliver on tastiness, rather being a middle of the road offering.

Poured nearly clear light amber with thick white head that laced well. Scent was subtle, mostly malty, with light pine from the hops. Flavor was rye forward with spicy/peppery notes, hops contribute to pretty strong bitterness with malt backbone. Carbonation and mouthfeel is strong.

Pours a hazy, yet relatively dark, amber color with a large bubbly white head.

Smells prominently of malt and rye, with some hops and general sweet undertones.

Taste is surprisingly gentle, and this very much feels like an incredibly drinkable, yet fairly unsubstantiated, malt-heavy session IPA. With that said, there are some subtle and quite delightful notes of spices and herbs in the aftertaste.

I haven't had that many rye IPA's in the past, but the one's I've had I have not enjoyed. I'm certainly not blown away by this, but it surprised me by its accessibility.

A= clear, brown, tinge of red, nice slightly off white head with decent retention
S= heavy hops, some sweetness from the malt and rye
T= this is where Rye IPAs really shine for me. I love the pepper notes in the finish with Rye IPAs
M= a great balance, sweet, but not too much, matches with the hops profile and the spiciness of the rye
O= 4.3

i really enjoy rye IPAs and this is a great example. The rye gives a beer a complexity and depth I feel that results in wanting another. I did a side by side with Ruthless and River Ryed from Sierra Nev. last spring and they were very close, color very close, ruthless with maybe slightly more red tinge on the edges, the smell and taste were also close but there was a distinction in the Ruthless, just something a bit more in the layering. They use overlapping but different hops with Ruthless I think having 1 extra variety, maybe this is the difference.

Part of a hop pak from SN that included Torpedo, HopHunter, Five Hops and this, let's give it a whirl. Popping the top I get a waft of almost brown sugar malt. Pours to a bronze color with a three finger micro bubble head. On the taste the brew is like a hopped up brown ale. Sweet and sugary but with a nice hop bite. Very smooth, not as grapefruit- like as most IPAs but deep in darker Rye malt and quite complex. A sneaky brew at 6.6 ABV, very tasty. Another winner from SN who never disappoints.

Long time first time. Had this poured into a pint glass. Color is a beautiful translucent, almost clear, copper with an off-white heard. Aroma is a little light considering the rich flavor. Spicy rye is obvious, with a nice bitter hop finish. Mouthfeel is a bit tough, but not terrible for a rye. Big fan.

12oz bottle pkgd 01/28/16. Served in a pint glass. Beer pours an orange amber color, clear, but darker than expected for Sierra Nevada, supporting a very large head. I get very little in the way of aroma -- maybe a little bit of malty bread smell. Flavor brings the new-classic combination of rye bitterness and hops, in American Single IPA proportions. Piny, bready, with a slick, cloying mouthfeel. I'm having really mixed feelings about this one. This is clearly not my favorite rye IPA, but is it any good? Is it too simple? Is it simple because that's what its balance demands?

Pours a clear, vibrant Amber in color with a full two fingers of dense very light khaki head with good retention and lacing. Aroma is very subdued, hints of caramel malt and a touch of breadiness. Taste is equally subdued but has a general underlying sweetness with some caramel and spicy rye with bready undertones and a slight bitterness in the finish. Medium+ mouthfeel with low-moderate carbonation. Overall a decent beer, easy drinking but not terribly interesting.

I like this rye IPA a lot - very sweet malts on the smell. I like how balanced the flavor is. It has a strong, oaky taste with a hint of straw/wet grass. Great malts and a little bitter on the aftertaste. There's nothing spectacular that stands out, but overall I think it's a very solid beer.

Poured from 12oz bottle, part of the 4 Way assortment pack. Color is a crisp bronze with a persistent frothy ecru head. Smells like peppery rye spice with a little tropical fruit. Tasty is malty and somewhat fruity with that spicy rye note. Mouthfeel is a little sticky and really pleasant. Finishes with a nice malty somewhat dry crispness. I like this one plenty.

A mostly clear, dark Amber color but with a slight barely visible haze. The aroma is very nice when poured into the glass. I love the taste of this one, delicious ipa with cedar notes. Pretty good mouth feel that lingers for a bit but isn't too syrupy. Overall this is one of my favorites from the 4 way ipa variety pack.

Taste is peppery rye spice, some melon, floral and vegetal herb notes, some grass, with mild tropical fruit. Feels light and creamy with low carbonation. Overall a unique and interesting Rye IPA.

Poured from a 12 oz. purchased in the 4 Way IPA 12 pack. Pours a beautiful orange blossom honey in color with a quickly disappearing head. The smell is fantastic, a wonderful combination of rye and hops. Taste is just as wonderful with a little bitterness in the middle and some rye in the finish and when I belch, its definitely an IPA.
