look: 5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

A: pours with a hazy golden copper color with hint of red had about 1 finger of an off white head that dicepated after a few moments with a good ammount of lacing on the glass

S: starts off with yeast followed earthy spicy tones with a s,isn't hint of resin however I don't get any of the citrus described

T: spicy caramel malt backbone followed by a good ammount of piney hop bitterness however there is a slight off flavor which may be a bit of alchol detected

M: not as dry as most ipa's has more of a full mouthfeel

O: easy to drink overall I would prefer torpedo over this for a Sierra Nevada selection however as a bonus the artwork on the label was very nice

look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

A: pours into my pint glass as an attractively browning gold, with modest bone colored head that fades to a nice lacing throughout the glass

S: the nose is a mild but pleasant interweaving of hops (grapefruit, pine) and grainy breadiness. the hops strengthen as the brew warms, and the overall aroma grows more sweet and sugary.

T: peppery up front upon first contact, followed by a sweet wash of hops and mild molasses. The rye then becomes more pronounced as an earthy undertone towards the finish.

M: smooth feel and decent, medium carbonation.

O: not bad at all, this brew has a lot of character. above average in its distinct categories, as a whole i actually find it greater even than the sum of its individual parts. i'll be back.

salud!

look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Appearance: Copper-honey color, hazy. Head above avg lasting and very good lacing.

Taste: Peppery rye, citrus, earthy, slightly herbal, grainy, sweet. Good hop bitterness, about avg for an ipa.

Feel: Smooth medium body. Light carbonation and a long finish.

Rye flavor brings tremendous balance for an IPA. Very drinkable for the non-hophead.

Ruthless Rye IPA opens to a nicely hoppy nose, pink grapefruit and grapefruit rind dominating, but supported by a nice mélange of pine, eucalyptus, mint, dandelion stem, and a touch of anise. The emphasis is clearly on hops here, and those aromas make up the greater part of the nose. There are still, however, nice aromas underneath, including an incredibly sweet candi sugar-like blast that mixes with orange, cherry, berry, and apricot fruit esters to form an almost crystallized fruit sugar extract sensation. The nose also brings a nice peppery undertone from the rye, adding a welcome layer of spice to the sugars and bitter hops. Finally, deep beneath lies a bed of toast crust, wheat bread, and Grape Nuts cereal. As a whole, the nose is excellent, bearing enough hoppy and sugary notes to make the salivary glands start flowing, and the flavors themselves nicely balanced (even if geared heavily towards the sugars and hops), and containing a fine variety of notes. This is especially impressive considering the 6.6% ABV, which would normally indicate a far lesser quality and strength of aromas.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a spicy, hoppy blast, the hops and rye fighting for attention. The hops win in the initial moments, bringing pink grapefruit and grapefruit rind, with mint, eucalyptus, dandelion stem, and pine, but the peppery rye notes keep excellent pace, coming in a close second. Sugars kick in after a second or so, adding the nice and surprisingly strong crystallized fruit extracts noted in the nose, and in the same flavors. Good touches of toast crust, wheat bread, and biscuit form an earthy layer at the bottom. In subsequent sips there is a lessening of sugary notes, the hops simply too powerful in competition, and the hops themselves lose some of their nuance as the tongue numbs under their blast, but the beer still remains tasty. The aftertaste is mainly hops, with faint lingering sugars and breads, and stays on the tongue for a good while. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is a very nice rye IPA, and for the low ABV, it’s surprising how much flavor is in here. The notes are very nicely balanced, and the beer as a whole is surprisingly tasty and smooth, even over the course of several mouthfuls. The hops are especially nice, being full and rounded and heavy in oils, which helps boost the mouthfeel. Worth trying.

pours a dark copper color with about a two finger tightly formed head and good amount of sticky lace. you can smell the hops there and there is a nice freshness to it. medium mouth feel and a crispy carbonation. strong hop taste some citric and spice notes but its all about the balance there are some bready and sweet notes also. i'm not a big hop head fan but enjoyed this beer a lot and would buy again.

a clear mahogany amber topped off with a soft nicotine white head. Nice patterns down the glass

grasssy hops with a bready malt. the bite of both hops and rye.

gentle sweetness to open that gives way to spicy pine and citrus hops and then the rye

A surge of carbonation initially gives way to the bittering bite of the finish. The aftertaste is more citrus

I'm enjoying the six pack I have, but would probably go elsewhere initially before repeating it again (which I will no doubt eventually do)
