Pours a nice coppery color, clear, with a great lasting head and nice lacing.

Aroma is very, very good! Spicy rye, plenty of piney and floral hops, malt balanced.

Taste is also very nice! It’s plenty spicy, I’m assuming from the rye. A bit of pepper, some floral notes, pine, citrus, a little earthiness.

Body is pretty full with good smooth carbonation, and a spicy, hoppy finish.

Definitely recommended. This one is a keeper!

Poured into a pint glass from the bottle.

Great caramel-amber color, quite clear, with a fairly good white head that leave ok lacing. Nothing spectacular but better than most. A smaller white head stays throughout.

I was expecting more from the nose - the nose was a bit tame for a SN brew. Perhaps I should have used a better glass or something. Although, this brew doesn't use Cascade, and cascade I guess is what I was expecting. It uses Citra ( which are awesome for flavor, not a lot of nose though) and a new unnamed variety. It works in the taste.

The taste is great. Super great floral hop taste initially, with some sweet citrusy notes in the middle accompanied by sweet malted barley, more floral hops, and a great, dry, smooth, yet spicy rye finish. What a great beer.

Pours a deep copper color, red and orange tones here and there. Nice clarity all around; very small bits of sediment hang in suspension throughout the brew. Creamy, off-white head settles to a quarter-inch quickly and leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is deep and heavy pine and hop oils, super wet, dark, and dank weed. Citrus notes bring up the rear end; tangerine, grapefruit. A little bit of dryness from the rye but not much in the aroma. The taste, however, is plentiful with rye - the large rye under body is the canvas upon which the rest of the beer lies. Hops go wild but don't overpower nor combat the rye for dominance; oily and resinous pines engulf, along with a slight white pepper spiciness. Some earthy herbal flavors pull through more and more; faint musty dirt, but not in a bad way. The citrus is a little more subdued on the palate than it was in the nose, and it takes on more of a light lemon zest flavor than the nose would lead to believe. Even in the finish, the rye is still popping and meshes with a nice yeast flavor in the aftertaste, along with some fading, dry bitterness. Medium bodied, although the mouth is somewhat thinner than expected and just a touch watery at times. Decent amount of carbonation.

What hasn't been said about Sierra Nevada already? Everything they put out it delicious. Ruthless Rye is a nice "Rye-PA" with a significant amount of rye and a nice hop profile to go along with it. Delicious stuff, here.

2013 poured into an Intuition pint glass at 28 degrees

A: Pours a deep amber, almost slightly hazy orange color. Very inviting

S: Smells bitter, little bit funky goodness, can definately get the rye out of it but overall leaves you wanting more.

T: Strong rye on the nose with some vanilla and piney hoppy notes on the back of the tongue. It finishes surprisingly clean and smooth for the amount of pungent hops on the nose. I could session this beer without issues at all.

M: Mouthfeel is good, nothing overwhelming but thats what I like in a pale or or IPA. The dryness at the end is what I expect of a rye IPA. Its very clean.

O: I enjoy this beer as a winter wonderland to temporarily replace Torpedo Extra IPA. The rye is fresh and clean, delivering a dry finish and leaves you wanting more...which is exactly what you can do when you finish the beer and its a mistake if you don't get another. Rivals Rich and Dans Rye IPA for me (had it fresh at the brewery) but doesnt quite live up to Hop Rod.

2013 bottle

Very deep amber/ almost brown with offwhite head

Smells of citrusy hops and some hearty grain

Taste is very balanced being slightly hop forward but fading quickly to a grain aftertaste

Nice full mouthfeel with good carbonation

I really like this beer and will drink quite alot of this over the next few months

A: Reddish-orange amber, with ample, clingy lacing that sticks all over the glass.
S: Hints of grain and a clean, fresh sensation I associate with rye.
T: The bready malts seem sweeter and more sugary than the 2012 batch. Fruit with hints of
orange and spice lead up to the piney, bitter hops. Bitterness builds the more one drinks,
and lingers pleasantly.
M: Very smooth; carbonation feels "small" and dispersed giving the beer a creamy feeling.
Gives the impression of being lighter than it is, on the tongue.

Overall I prefer the 2012 batch, which I recall being dryer, but 2013 is very enjoyable. I like the relative extremes of sweetness and bitterness. It's seasonally appropriate and more subtle than most other winter brews.
